Palermo union supporters receive donation from California union

Palermo Villa Inc. workers seeking to organize have received a financial boost from an out-of-state union.

Palermo Villa Inc. workers seeking to unionize are receiving a financial shot in the arm from a California union, officials said Monday.

United Steelworkers, local 675, based in Carson, Calif., last month began an ongoing, monthly donation of $500 to support the organizing effort by workers at the Milwaukee pizza manufacturing facility, said Robin Rich, a United Steelworkers worker organizer.

The Milwaukee office of the United Steelworkers, local 1114, is hosting a luncheon today to kick off the 2013 campaign for a Palermo union. Leaders of the ?CLEAN Carwash Campaign? in California will be featured guests at the event and will discuss how they won union contracts at four Los Angeles car washes, according to a United Steelworkers press release.

The California representatives will also present a check to the Palermo workers? strike fund.

Dozens of Palermo workers have been on strike since June protesting allegedly unsafe working conditions at the plant in the Menomonee Valley at 3301 W. Canal St., and are seeking higher pay, among other issues.

Many hourly production workers walked off the job after Palermo management did not agree to a request to voluntarily recognize the Palermo Workers Union as the collective bargaining representative without having to conduct a formal vote.

That vote was put on hold during a National Labor Relations Board investigation of alleged unfair labor practices by Palermo, and the vote remains in limbo during an appeal of the NLRB?s decision.
