Netflix and YouTube's DIAL promises to be open alternative to AirPlay

It's already clear that most of us prefer watching Netflix on TV rather than on our PCs or tablets, but it appears the subscription video pioneer isn't content with just direct streaming. As we learned at CES 2013, Netflix is currently in cahoots with YouTube to build out a multiscreen initiative called DIAL (which stands for "discovery and launch") that could provide real competition for Apple's AirPlay. It works in essentially the same way -- DIAL lets you play streaming video on compatible TVs without having to launch the app first -- but there are a few key differences. Unlike AirPlay, DIAL lets you launch apps, even web apps, on the TV -- if it's a Smart TV, you'll even be redirected to download an appropriate app from its app store. However, it can't send URLs to the TV and mirror displays like AirPlay can, supposedly to avoid protocol conflicts as it builds its network of partnerships.

And that's where DIAL's growing momentum comes in. According to GigaOm, DIAL is an open protocol, which gives it massive dev and OEM appeal. All Google TV boxes already have it, while Sony, Samsung and LG are reportedly very interested. Scott Mirer, director of product management at Netflix, said the latter two have already incorporated it in some 2012 TVs, with more coming in the future. More important is the support from app devs and content providers -- BBC, Hulu, Pandora and Flingo have already signed up to take part in the effort, with Chrome purportedly working on DIAL compatibility for browser-to-TV page-flinging. On the whole, it's a promising path for not just Netflix and YouTube, which have previously only released relatively limited remote control applications, but the second screen movement in general.

Aprilia Stingray by Vilner

For the next project, perhaps the Bulgarian design house, Vilner, will once again try to the world of motorcycles long with the full-modification of a new Aprilia Tuono that has been cleverly named as the Stingray.

Its styling transformation includes a range of modifications containing a brand new front fender, the revamped headlamps and also the turning signals along with the LED units, the new side spoilers along with two vents each, a re-sculptured tank and also the tinted rear lights.

Moreover, Vilner also has re-positioned the license plate holder, re-upholstered the seats, painted the part of the frame in black, extended the great rear fork and the driving chain by 150mm and also re-sprayed the wheels. To perfect the design, there is a performance upgrade which has been said to boast the new Aprilia?s output by ten percent.

Files show attempts to protect molester priests

Retired Cardinal Roger Mahony and other top Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles officials maneuvered behind the scenes to shield molester priests, provide damage control for the church and keep parishioners in the dark, according to church personnel files.

The confidential records filed in a lawsuit against the archdiocese disclose how the church handled abuse allegations for decades and also reveal dissent from a top Mahony aide who criticized his superiors for covering up allegations of abuse rather than protecting children.

Notes inked by Mahony demonstrate he was disturbed about abuse and sent problem priests for treatment, but there also were lengthy delays or oversights in some cases. Mahony received psychological reports on some priests that mentioned the possibility of many other victims, for example, but there is no indication that he or other church leaders investigated further.

"This is all intolerable and unacceptable to me," Mahony wrote in 1991 on a file of the Rev. Lynn Caffoe, a priest suspected of locking boys in his room, videotaping their crotches and running up a $100 phone sex bill while with a boy. Caffoe was sent for therapy and removed from ministry, but Mahony didn't move to defrock him until 2004, a decade after the archdiocese lost track of him.

"He is a fugitive from justice," Mahony wrote to the Vatican's Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who is now Pope Benedict XVI. "A check of the Social Security index discloses no report of his demise, so presumably he is alive somewhere."

Caffoe died in 2009, six years after a newspaper reporter found him working at a homeless mission two blocks from a Salinas elementary school.

Mahony was out of town but issued a statement Monday apologizing for his mistakes and saying he had been "naive" about the lasting impacts of abuse. He has since met with 90 abuse victims privately and keeps an index card with each victim's name in his private chapel, where he prays for them daily, he said. The card also includes the name of the molesting priest "lest I forget that real priests created this appalling harm."

"It remains my daily and fervent prayer that God's grace will flood the heart and soul of each victim, and that their life journey continues forward with ever greater healing," Mahony wrote. "I am sorry."

The apology stands in contrast to letters Mahony was writing to accused priests more than two decades ago.

In 1987, he wrote to the Rev. Michael Wempe ? who would ultimately admit to abusing 13 boys ? while the priest was undergoing in-patient therapy at a New Mexico treatment center.

"Each of you there at Jemez Springs is very much in my prayers and I call you to mind each day during my celebration of the Eucharist," Mahony wrote to the priest, adding that he supported him in the experience.

The church's sex abuse policy was evolving and Mahony inherited some of the worst cases from his predecessor when he took over in 1985, J. Michael Hennigan, an archdiocese attorney, said in a separate series of emails. Priests were sent out of state for psychological treatment because they revealed more when their therapists were not required to report child abuse to law enforcement, as they were in California, he said.

At the time, clergy were not mandated sex abuse reporters and the church let the victims' families decide whether to contact police, he added.

In at least one case, a priest victimized the children of illegal immigrants and threatened to have them deported if they told, the files show.

The files are attached to a motion seeking punitive damages in a case involving a Mexican priest sent to Los Angeles in 1987 after he was brutally beaten in his parish south of Mexico City.

When parents complained the Rev. Nicholas Aguilar Rivera molested in LA, church officials told the priest but waited two days to call police ? allowing him to flee to Mexico, court papers allege. At least 26 children told police they were abused during his 10 months in Los Angeles. The now-defrocked priest is believed to be in Mexico and remains a fugitive.

The personnel files of 13 other clerics were attached to the motion to show a cover-up pattern, said attorney Anthony De Marco, who represents the 35-year-old plaintiff. In one instance, a memo to Mahony discusses sending a cleric to a therapist who also is an attorney so any incriminating evidence is protected from authorities by lawyer-client privilege. In another instance, archdiocese officials paid a secret salary to a priest exiled to the Philippines after he and six other clerics were accused of having sex with a teen and impregnating her.

The exhibits offer a glimpse at some 30,000 pages to be made public as part of a record-setting $660 million settlement. The archdiocese agreed to give the files to more than 500 victims of priest abuse in 2007, but a lawyer for about 30 of the priests fought to keep records sealed. A judge recently ordered the church to release them without blacking out the names of church higher-ups after The Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times intervened.

They echo similar releases from other dioceses nationwide that have shown how church leaders for decades shuffled problem priests from parish to parish, covered up reports of abuse and didn't contact law enforcement. Top church officials in Missouri and Pennsylvania were criminally convicted last year for their roles in covering up abuse, more than a decade after the clergy sex abuse scandal began to unfold in Boston.

Mahony, who retired in 2011 after 26 years at the helm of the 4.3-million person archdiocese, has been particularly hounded by the case of the Rev. Michael Baker, who was sentenced to prison in 2007 for molestation ? two decades after the priest confessed his abuse to Mahony.

Mahony noted the "extremely grave and serious situation" when he sent Baker for psychological treatment after the priest told him in 1986 that he had molested two brothers over seven years.

Baker returned to ministry the next year with a doctor's recommendation that he be defrocked immediately if he spent any time with minors. Despite several documented instances of being alone with boys, the priest wasn't removed from ministry until 2000. Around the same time, the church learned he was conducting baptisms without permission.

Church officials discussed announcing Baker's abuse in churches where he had worked, but Mahony rejected the idea.

"We could open up another firestorm ? and it takes us years to recover from those," Mahony wrote in an Oct. 6, 2000, memo. "Is there no alternative to public announcements at all the Masses in 15 parishes??? Wow ? that really scares the daylights out of me!!"

The aide, Msgr. Richard Loomis, noted his dismay over the matter when he retired in 2001 as vicar for clergy, the top church official who handled priestly discipline. In a memo to his successor, Loomis said Baker's attorney disclosed the priest had at least 10 other victims.

"We've stepped back 20 years and are being driven by the need to cover-up and to keep the presbyteriate & public happily ignorant rather than the need to protect children," Loomis wrote.

"The only other option is to sit and wait until another victim comes forward. Then someone else will end up owning the archdiocese of Los Angeles. The liability issues involved aside, I think that course of complete (in)action would be immoral and unethical."

Mahony preferred targeted warnings at schools and youth groups rather than a warning read at Masses, Hennigan said. Parish announcements were made two years later.

Baker, who was paroled in 2011, is alleged to have molested 20 children in his 26-year career. He could not be reached for comment.

The files also show Mahony corresponded with abusive priests while they underwent treatment out of state and worked to keep them out of California to avoid criminal and civil trouble.

One case involved the Msgr. Peter Garcia, a molester whom Mahony's predecessor sent for treatment in New Mexico. Mahony kept Garcia there after a lawyer warned in 1986 that the archdiocese could face "severe civil liability" if he returned and reoffended. Garcia had admitted raping an 11-year-old boy and later told a psychologist he molested 15 to 17 young boys.

"If Monsignor Garcia were to reappear here within the archdiocese, we might very well have some type of legal action filed in both the criminal and civil sectors," Mahony wrote to the director of Garcia's New Mexico treatment program.

Mahony then sent Garcia to another treatment center, but Garcia returned to LA in 1988 after being removed from ministry. He then contacted a victim's mother and asked to spend time with her younger son, according to a letter in the file.

Mahony moved to defrock him in 1989, and Garcia died a decade later.?

Do Governance Principles Change for SMBs? - SharePoint Expert ...

By Christian Buckley, Director of Product Evangelism at Axceler

January 21, 2013 - 7:48 PM

An interesting question was posted to the interwebs via Twitter. Someone was searching for information on governance for small to medium businesses (SMBs) -- specifically as it applies to SMBs, rather than large enterprises. My initial reaction was that there is no difference. Much of my professional experience has been in project management and business analyst roles, helping organizations large and small to define, deploy, and maintain governance and change management infrastructures. In my experience, the core principles of governance for a large enterprise -- the defined roles, the scope of activities, the best practices on how to manage it -- are equally true for the small or medium business.

?

But is this, in fact, true? Are the principles of governance different for SMBs than they are for the enterprise?

?

Clearly, how you apply governance evolves as your organization grows. Policies and procedures and roles will be developed and rolled out as the size and scope of your systems increase. Likewise, there are organizational structures and business needs that require strict control over their SharePoint environments?..but that could be said for smaller companies in tightly controlled fields with heavy regulatory oversight. Smaller systems do not equal simpler systems. You can have a very small SharePoint deployment, for example, by way of users (lets say under 100 people) and amount of content (less than 200 gigs), but how you use your environment could require complex permissions and policies, both proactive (how you actually build out your environment to guide people to the right place) and reactive (let users and administrators know when limits have been reached or policies have been broken, and automate the next steps, as possible). Other things that may vary depending on size and complexity are the actions to be taken, the degree of documentation that is captured and tracked, and the number of steps taken, formal or informal, to resolve issues.

?

But does any of that make governance different for SMBs? I don't think so. These differences really have nothing to do with the core principles that make your governance model successful:

  • Understand your current system: how it works, how it is managed, strengths and weaknesses.
  • Define your future system: regulatory and compliance requirements, reporting and dashboarding (business intelligence) requirements, roles and responsibilities.
  • Perform a gap analysis: understand what it will take to get your system from where you are today to where you want to be, with a detailed analysis of the capabilities (and shortcomings) of your platform and tools.
  • Execute and manage the changes: as you deploy the new system, you'll learn and grow and make adjustments to your governance model. At the center of this process is having a strong change management process, and to provide transparency to the organization so that people know what is happening, and can see the progress and priority of their change requests.

?

These principles are true no matter what the size of the company. You can argue the granular components (things like item-level permissions, or document retention roles) but the fact is that some small organizations need complex governance infrastructures, and some massive organizations prefer keeping their governance models as simple as possible.

?

Go punt.?

50 Cent talks germs, 'In Da Club' anniversary

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Rapper 50 Cent isn't known for his gentle persona -- this is the man who survived being shot nine times in 2000. But his hit "In Da Club" rocked everyone's world in 2003, and now he's making a name for himself with his fitness book, "Formula 50."

50 Cent chats with the TODAY anchors.

50 Cent stopped by TODAY Wednesday to talk about the book, then stuck around with Savannah Guthrie, Willie Geist and Natalie Morales for the show's Take 3 segment. And that's when he turned out to be funny, soft-spoken ... and apparently germ-obsessed.

The TODAY anchors chatted with the musician about the fact that "In Da Club" is actually 10 years old, and Geist revealed himself as a 50 Cent "groupie."

As they addressed the topics at hand -- Coca-Cola's anti-obesity ads coming under fire as hypocritical was the first -- 50 was happy to share his opinion. "I think too much of a lot of things out there are no good for you," said the aspiring fitness guru.?

The quiz in which the gang had to answer questions about 50 Cent himself, however, elicited the most laughs -- turns out Morales guessed right, that 50's favorite actor was Samuel L. Jackson.

"I was a big Charlie Sheen fan," the rapper allowed, "but I just got a chance to see 'Django (Unchained)' and (Jackson's) choices in that movie made him my favorite."

His favorite sport? Geist knew: Boxing. "I like sports where I can't blame anyone if I lose," said 50.

Alas, no one knew that his favorite cartoon was "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." Better luck next time.

The germ obsession emerged following a segment earlier in the show showing that many common objects are germ-ridden. It resurfaced at the end of the rapper's visit, when he was advised not to touch the door on the way out.

"So many people have touched it, it gave me a phobia now!" he said with a grin.

"We've made you totally paranoid; our work here is done," said Guthrie.

Cellular iPad mini and 4th-gen iPad arriving in China on Friday

China is always a few months behind the rest of the world with Apple releases. The Wi-Fi versions of the iPad mini and 4th-gen iPad only officially went on sale last month, and the data enabled versions are only just appearing this Friday.

Both iPad?s will go on sale through Apple stores across China and more than likely through China Unicom branches, although this has yet to be confirmed.

Although both iPad?s support LTE, current Apple products?s are not compatible with the countries current TD-LTE network which is operated by China Mobile, and only available in a few select cities, but from personal use I can confirm the iPad Mini works flawlessly on China Unicom?s 3G network.

Palermo union supporters receive donation from California union

Palermo Villa Inc. workers seeking to organize have received a financial boost from an out-of-state union.

Palermo Villa Inc. workers seeking to unionize are receiving a financial shot in the arm from a California union, officials said Monday.

United Steelworkers, local 675, based in Carson, Calif., last month began an ongoing, monthly donation of $500 to support the organizing effort by workers at the Milwaukee pizza manufacturing facility, said Robin Rich, a United Steelworkers worker organizer.

The Milwaukee office of the United Steelworkers, local 1114, is hosting a luncheon today to kick off the 2013 campaign for a Palermo union. Leaders of the ?CLEAN Carwash Campaign? in California will be featured guests at the event and will discuss how they won union contracts at four Los Angeles car washes, according to a United Steelworkers press release.

The California representatives will also present a check to the Palermo workers? strike fund.

Dozens of Palermo workers have been on strike since June protesting allegedly unsafe working conditions at the plant in the Menomonee Valley at 3301 W. Canal St., and are seeking higher pay, among other issues.

Many hourly production workers walked off the job after Palermo management did not agree to a request to voluntarily recognize the Palermo Workers Union as the collective bargaining representative without having to conduct a formal vote.

That vote was put on hold during a National Labor Relations Board investigation of alleged unfair labor practices by Palermo, and the vote remains in limbo during an appeal of the NLRB?s decision.

Jeff Engel is The Business Journal's reporter covering the manufacturing industry and technology.

Abstract (provisional)

Background

This study aimed to investigate the relationship of anemia and body mass index among adult women in Jiangsu Province, China. Data were collected in a sub-national cross-sectional survey, and 1,537 women aged 20 years and above were included in the analyses. Subjects were classified by body mass index (BMI) categories as underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese according to the Chinese standard. Central obesity was defined as a waist circumference >= 80 cm. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin concentration < 12 g/dl. Prevalence ratios (PRs) of the relationship between anemia and BMI or waist circumference were calculated using Poisson regression.

Findings: Overall, 31.1% of the Chinese women were anemic. The prevalence of overweight, obesity and central obesity was 34.2%, 5.8% and 36.2%, respectively. The obese group had the highest concentrations of hemoglobin compared with other BMI groups. After adjustment for confounders, overweight and obese women had a lower PR for anemia (PR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.62-0.89; PR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.43-0.79). Central obesity was inversely associated with anemia.

Conclusion

In this Chinese population, women with overweight/obesity or central obesity were less likely to be anemic as compared to normal weight women. No measures are required currently to target anemia specifically for overweight and obese people in China.

Stocks end flat but see gain for the week

1 hr.

Stocks finished largely unchanged in lackluster trading Friday as investors remained on the sidelines ahead of next week's flurry of earnings reports, but still pulled off their second-straight weekly gain.

"The bulls really need a breakout here," said Art Cashin, director of floor operations at UBS Financial Services. "You've got to make a credible run toward 1,500 [on the S&P 500] and that itself may stampede some money from the sidelines."?

The?Dow Jones Industrial Average?eked out a small gain, led by?Microsoft?and?Chevron?after crawling along the flatline for most of the session. The blue-chip index traded in a tight 56-point range for most of the day.

The?S&P 500?and the?Nasdaq?finished narrowly mixed. The?CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, slipped to close near 13.

Wall Street got its first look at big bank earnings, with?Wells Fargo?posting a quarterly profit of 91 cents a share, two cents ahead of estimates. Revenue of $21.9 billion was about in line with expectations. However, traders reacted negatively to the report, sending shares lower.?

"Net interest margin is an ongoing problem for the banking industry," said John Fox, co-manager of the FAM Value Fund. "Low rates have good aspects and bad aspects?it's tough for financial institutions to earn a good return on equity. You're earning less on every dollar."?

Other major financials including?JPMorgan,?Goldman Sachs,?Bank of America?and?Citigroup?are scheduled to post results throughout next week.

Pruney fingers give us better grip underwater

WHY do our fingers do prune impressions when soaked? It could be an adaptation that gives us better grip underwater.

Fingers and toes wrinkle in water after about 5 minutes due to the constriction of blood vessels. This reduction in volume pulls the skin inward, but as the skin's surface area cannot change, it wrinkles. A study in 2011 showed that wrinkles form a pattern of channels that divert water away from the fingertip ? akin to rain treads on tyres. The team thought that this could aid grip.

To find out, Tom Smulders and his team at Newcastle University, UK, timed people as they transferred wet or dry objects from one box to another with and without wrinkled fingers.

With wrinkles, wet objects were transferred about 12 per cent faster than with unwrinkled fingers. The time it took to transfer dry objects was the same regardless of wrinkles.

So why aren't our digits always prune-like? "With wrinkles, less of your skin surface touches the object, so there may be issues of sensitivity," Smulders suggests.

Keeping to your New Year resolutions with PiFace

Jan. 8, 2013 ? After a festive period of excess, a January diet is one of the most common New Year resolutions for many people.

Sticking to it, however, is harder, with temptation around every corner and inside every cupboard.

Now University of Manchester scientists have come up with a unique deterrent -- a talking, tweeting chicken guarding your cupboards to shame hungry dieters into abstaining.

The chicken, which not only barks out orders to sneaky snackers, but even tweets that person's Twitter account to publicly shame them if they stray, uses a Raspberry Pi -- a tiny, single-board computer.

Raspberry Pi and PiFace, an add-on which powers real-life applications, are the simplest and most user-friendly ways for computers to interface with the world, and are being used by University of Manchester scientists to inspire the next generation of computer whizzkids.

The credit-card sized computers have a vast range of potential applications that will get young people fired up for computing. As well as the cupboard watcher, The University has helped youngsters make birdboxes that tweet and photograph birds, control Scalextric cars and build interactive toys that react to the weather. London Zoo is also interested in collaborating to record animal movements.

The academics, from the University's School of Computer Science, have run a series of workshops for schoolteachers aiming to transform the teaching of computing in schools.

Raspberry Pi and PiFace put the fun back into computing and academics hope to be a major influence on changing the way the schools and society view the subject.

Academics have found that schoolchildren coming into University have a much lower level of technical knowledge than in previous years. The Government is keen on improving how computing is taught in schools using a scientific approach to the subject.

Raspberry Pi was developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the aim of improving teaching of basic computer science in schools.

PiFace devices sit on top of the Raspberry Pi to control the real world -- powering motors, controlling robots, triggering cameras and using sensor networks. With the Pi they have all the capabilities of a computer but are more flexible and can be embedded in the real world -- costing as little as ?40 per kit.

Dr David Rydeheard, from the School of Computer Science, said: "This is an exciting development, taking computing out of its box and allowing schoolchildren to play with the science of computing.

"Schools have physics, chemistry and biology laboratories to teach these subjects. The combination of Raspberry Pi and PiFace creates a cheap personal laboratory for computer science that every child can own.

"The future wealth of our country depends crucially on our expertise in the science and technology of computing. At the moment schools fail to teach their students computing: how to design and build computing systems. Raspberry Pi and PiFace are ideal for schools to use to teach this key subject."

Workshops for teachers using Raspberry Pi and PiFace have attracted more than 50 teachers from schools in the North West per session, and more recently The University has run workshops with children.

Dr Andrew Robinson was amazed by the response of children. He said: "It really fired their imagination.

"After seeing what Raspberry Pi and PiFace could do we had suggestions including an automated insulin monitor that can dial 999, and another that automatically reorders food when it detects the cupboard is bare.

"One child even came up with a design for a device that politely reminds you to put the toilet seat down after use. I was really blown away with what they came up with."

The team are also launching the Raspberry Pi Bake Off, an international competition for schools and hobbyists, challenging entrants to create useful gadgets to change the world using Raspberry Pi computers.

A video of children using PiFace with the Scalextric and birdbox during the Manchester Science Festival can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjME3WU7ao0

All-Star Guitar gets loaded with Lightning connector compatibility

All-Star Guitar gets loaded with Lightning connector compatibility

If you caught Ion's All-Star Guitar in our holiday gift guide, but didn't find it under the Festivus pole since it lacked support for Apple's Lightning connector, there could be hope for next year's holiday haul. The faux guitar is getting refreshed with a Lightning connector and has kept the same form factor, complete with light-up fret buttons and built-in speaker. For the uninitiated, the rig above can accommodate an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch and allows users to learn notes and chords via a companion app. As of now, there's no word on when you'll be able to rock out with the axe or how many simoleons it'll set you back.

Patients who undergo surgery for oesophageal cancer have a much greater chance of long term survival if the operation is carried out by a surgeon who has performed this particular operation many times before. This according to a new, large-scale study conducted by researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, and published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. In their article, the researchers conclude that oesophageal cancer surgery should be concentrated or centralised to fewer surgeons.

Surgery is the most widely established curative treatment for oesophageal cancer. However, it is a major operation and only a third of patients who undergo it survive for five or more years afterwards. The purpose of the present study was to ascertain the relation between hospital and surgeon volume and long-term survival in patients who underwent surgery for oesophageal cancer.

Earlier studies have shown that the surgeon's and the hospital's annual operation volume both affect short-term survival (1-3 months post-surgery), but there are few patients who die so soon afterwards. The few studies that have examined operation volume in relation to long-term survival have given conflicting results, while many lack information on other key prognostic factors, including tumour stage.

The study that is now published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology is the most comprehensive of its kind in the subject. It included all 1,335 patients operated on for oesophageal cancer in Sweden between 1987 and 2005 with follow-ups up to January 2011. Survival analysis was used to study the effect of annual hospital volume, annual surgeon volume and surgeon experience measured as cumulative surgeon volume as regards survival following oesophageal cancer surgery. The analyses were adjusted for all established prognostic factors.

The study's main finding is that patients operated on by surgeons with a high annual and total volume had 22 per cent lower long-term mortality than patients operated on by surgeons with a low annual and total operation volume. The hospital's annual volume, however, had no independent impact on long-term survival. From this, the researchers conclude that oesophageal cancer surgery should be concentrated to fewer surgeons, giving them the opportunity to maintain a high annual volume for this major, complicated procedure.
