Envoys in Egypt visit jailed Brotherhood leader: reports

By Tom Perry

CAIRO (Reuters) - International envoys visited a high-ranking member of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood in jail on Monday, the state news agency reported, to press a bid to defuse the crisis ignited by President Mohamed Mursi's downfall.

The envoys met deputy Brotherhood leader Khairat El-Shater just after midnight, having received permission from the prosecutor general to visit him at Tora prison, south of Cairo, the state news agency MENA reported.

The report citing "an informed source" contradicted an earlier government denial of a visit by officials from the United States, European Union, United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

MENA gave no further details. Earlier, the Doha-based Al Jazeera news channel reported the meeting had taken place. The reports could not be independently confirmed.

Shater is deputy leader of the group that propelled Mursi to office last year in Egypt's first democratic presidential election. Seen as the Brotherhood's political strategist, he was arrested after Mursi's downfall on charges of inciting violence.

The international mediation effort is helping to contain the bloody conflict between Mursi's Islamist backers and the interim government installed by the military that overthrew him on July 3, following mass protests against his rule.

The army-backed government said on Sunday it would give mediation a chance but warned that time was limited.

Thousands of Mursi supporters remain camped out in two Cairo sit-ins, which the government has declared a threat to national security and pledged to disperse.

Al Masry Al Youm, a privately owned newspaper, said Shater was visited by a delegation including U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and European Union envoy Bernadino Leon.

Shater told the envoys he would only hold talks with them in the presence of Mursi because he was "the legitimate president", the newspaper reported on its website, citing a senior security source.

The diplomats were accompanied by members of the armed forces during the visit, which the report said was focused on ways to end the sit-ins.

The authorities say the Brotherhood has incited violence, accusing it of engaging in terrorism - a charge the movement denies as it grapples with one of the toughest moments in its 85-year history.

The crisis has left Egypt, the Arab world's biggest nation, more dangerously divided than at any point since the downfall of U.S.-backed strongman Hosni Mubarak in 2011 and raised questions over the future of its nascent democracy.

Mursi became Egypt's first freely elected leader in June 2012. But fears that he sought to establish himself as a new dictator coupled with a failure to ease economic hardships afflicting most of its 84 million people led to huge street demonstrations on June 30, triggering the army move.

COURT SETS DATE FOR TRIAL OF SHATER, OTHERS

The military has laid out a plan that could see a new head of state elected in roughly nine months. The Brotherhood, an Islamist movement that spent decades in the shadows before Mubarak's downfall, says it wants nothing to do with the plan.

However, diplomats say the group knows Mursi will not return as president and wants a face-saving legal formula for him to step down that guarantees it a stake in the political future.

Almost 300 people have been killed in political violence since Mursi's overthrow, including 80 shot dead by security forces in a single incident on July 27. Much of the Brotherhood's leadership is in custody.

On Sunday, a Cairo court announced that the top leader of the Brotherhood and two other officials including Shater would go on trial in three weeks' time for crimes including incitement to murder during protests in the days before Mursi was toppled.

That could complicate efforts to launch a political process, encourage national reconciliation and avert further bloodshed.

The interim administration has said it wants political reconciliation to include the Brotherhood but says the group must first renounce and halt violence.

Suggesting an appetite for compromise, a spokesman for the Mursi camp said on Saturday it wanted a solution that would "respect all popular desires," an apparent recognition of the strength of the protests against his one year in power.

During a meeting with Burns and Leon on Saturday, the pro-Mursi delegation also said they would be willing to negotiate with politicians that backed Mursi's ouster.

But they are also seeking the restoration of a constitution suspended when Mursi was deposed and want the military, together with army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, out of politics.

Mursi is being held at an undisclosed location and facing a probe into accusations including murder.

In the United States, which supplies Egypt with $1.5 billion in aid each year, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham said the Egyptian army must move "more aggressively" to hold elections. He said future U.S. aid will hinge upon a return to civilian rule.

U.S. President Barack Obama has asked Graham and Senator John McCain to travel to Egypt to meet members of the new government and the opposition.

"The military can't keep running the country. We need democratic elections," Graham said in a CNN interview.

Washington has been grappling with how to respond to the situation in Egypt, for decades an important ally in its Middle East policy.

"I want to keep the aid flowing to Egypt, but it has to be with the understanding that Egypt is going to march toward democracy, not toward a military dictatorship. And that's the message we're going to send," Graham said.

Judge denies class status for women suing Wal-Mart in California

Female Wal-Mart workers in California suing for gender discrimination can't pursue their claims against the retailer as a group because the evidence didn't show they had enough in common, a judge said.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco said the women's request for class certification suffered from the same deficiencies as an earlier version of the case brought on behalf of a national group of more than 1 million women. That case was thrown out by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2011.

"To show a common question underlying their disparate treatment claims, plaintiffs must provide significant proof that Wal-Mart operated under a general policy of discrimination," Breyer said in his ruling Friday. "They have not amassed sufficient anecdotal evidence of bias and stereotyped thinking among management to establish significant proof of a general policy of discrimination within any management group."

The sex-bias case was originally filed in San Francisco in 2001 by women at a handful of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. locations claiming that they were denied higher pay and promotions. It was certified as a class action covering more than 1 million employees after lawyers for the workers convinced a judge that employment policies at the Bentonville, Ark., company meant women at hundreds of stores across the U.S. were subject to similar treatment.

After the Supreme Court rejected the nationwide group, lawyers refiled cases representing groups of women in different states. In October, Wal-Mart won dismissal of a lawsuit seeking to represent female workers in Texas.

Although the women compiled substantial evidence of discrimination at Wal-Mart stores, that's not enough to overcome the Supreme Court's instruction when it rejected the nationwide class, Breyer said.

"Rather than identify an employment practice and define a class around it, plaintiffs continue to challenge the discretionary decisions of hundreds of decision makers, while arbitrarily confining their proposed class to corporate regions that include stores in California, among other states," he said.

Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, said in an emailed statement that the plaintiffs' claims are "unsuitable" to be treated as a class action because of the differing situations of each individual.

The ruling "rejects the attempt of a few associates to turn their individual complaints into a sweeping and unwarranted class action," according to the statement. Wal-Mart is a "great place for women to work and advance" and the allegations of the five plaintiffs in this case "are not representative of the positive experiences that hundreds of thousands of women have had working at Wal-Mart," the company said.

Cloud Cannon Turns Any Static Website Into An Editable Dropbox-Based CMS

Cloud CannonCloud Cannon is a CMS designed specifically for designers who know how to work with HTML, JavaScript, CSS and any static content. Instead of having to turn your beautiful designs into a dynamic CMS, you just have to put your files into a Dropbox folder — Cloud Cannon will take care of the rest in seconds. Clients can then edit paragraphs in the browser, insert images and more, as if it were an editable CMS. There isn’t much else to say about this beautiful use case of the Dropbox API, because it’s as simple as that. Many have already hosted static content on their Dropbox accounts, but George Phillips and Mike Neumegen take it a step further by allowing administrators to edit the site directly in the browser, similarly to what you would do on a Squarespace website. And if the WYSIWYG editor doesn’t suit your needs, you can always edit the source files in the web-based text editor (or in your Dropbox, of course). You can manage client accounts to restrict the editing parts if you are working with a client. Only the content area will be editable as you need to add a class=”editable” div to any part of your HTML. If you need to host a blog, you can use static blog engine Jekyll. Cloud Cannon works with custom domain names or free .cloudvent.net subdomains. The service isn’t free — subscriptions range from $5 a month for a site to $49 a month for 20 sites. The startup doesn’t actually use Dropbox’s server infrastructure because there are some bandwidth restrictions for public folders. Cloud Cannon uses the Dropbox API to sync everything to its own servers, much like Marco Arment’s blogging engine. Dropbox only acts as an interface between the user and the hosting server. Yet, because it only supports static content, the startup doesn’t actually need big servers if they are configured properly with Varnish-style accelerators. One of Cloud Cannon’s main advantages is that users don’t need to turn into system admins and manage their own hosting solution. But even if you need a little more flexibility, this product is a very cool, well-designed hack that is worth checking out.

Bay of Pigs redux: Caracas claims CIA-linked Cuban exiles planned to kill president

Published time: August 01, 2013 08:47 Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro (AFP Photo / Leo Ramirez)

Venezuelan officials warned of an alleged plot to assassinate the country?s President and launch a paramilitary invasion of the country. A former CIA agent, Cuban exiles living in the US and Latin American leaders were fingered in the conspiracy

President?Nicolas?Maduro, who succeeded Hugo Chavez, first alleged that his enemies want him dead while on the campaign trail in April.

The suspected plot to overthrow the government in Caracas was allegedly funded by Cuban exiles living in Miami, the head of the Venezuela?s parliament Diosdado Cabello told legislators on Wednesday. They raised some $2.5 million and recruited about 400 mercenaries, who would enter Venezuela?s Zulia state from Columbia as part of the plan.

He pointed to former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and former CIA agent Luis Posada Carriles, who lives in the US, as those among the organizers of the plot. Venezuela and Cuba want Carriles for carrying out anti-communist terrorist attacks, including the 1976 bombing of a Cuban airliner that killed 73 people and the bombing of several hotels in Cuba in 1997, in which one tourist died.

Venezuelan Interior Minister Miguel Rodriguez Torres gave additional information on the alleged plot to TeleSUR television. He claimed the plan of the so-called Operation Baby was to have a sniper kill Maduro on July 24. The assassination would be a signal for militant attacks on military and political targets in the country, he said.

He further accused Venezuelan right-wing forces, former Honduran President Roberto Micheletti and a Miami-based real estate businessman Eduardo Macaya of involvement in the alleged conspiracy.

Maduro and his allies earlier highlighted mercenaries in El Salvador and Columbia as potential threats and named Uribe and former US diplomats Roger Noriega and Otto Reich as individuals hatching plots against Venezuela.

Rarely is there so much at stake in getting back to zero.

On Wednesday, Facebook Inc.'s stock briefly touched its initial public offering price of $38, hitting a marker that felt out of reach in autumn of last year, when the stock was in free-fall. While shares eventually drifted lower, to settle at $36.80, Facebook is still within striking distance of $38?a fact not lost on Facebook's investors, many of whom were burned in the company's botched IPO.

    97% The Act Of Killing

    All Critics (65) | Top Critics (17) | Fresh (63) | Rotten (2)

Oppenheimer allows murderous thugs free rein to preen their atrocities, and then fobs it all off as some kind of exalted art thing. This is more than an aesthetic crime; it's a moral crime.

Whatever you call it, The Act of Killing is a must-see.

It's a mind-bending film, devastating and disorienting, that disturbs us in ways we're not used to being disturbed ...

[It] may be one of the most horrifying films you'll ever see, and one of the most edifying.

    It will leave you breathless.

It's a virtually unprecedented social document.

Anwar Congo may be the scariest person you'll see on screen this year.

If director Joshua Oppenheimer occasionally loses his way in his own narrative, where this picture demands attention is in its chilling portrait of indoctrination and evil.

It's a gut-wrenching and emotionally exhausting look at impunity that resonates far beyond its obscure central conflict.

A cynically exploitative film made in the name of human rights, which it has about as much to do with as the Punked show on MTV.

Presenting a terrifying view of a hidden holocaust and a moral apocalypse in which the most basic humanities have become twisted beyond recognition, The Act of Killing is a towering achievement in filmmaking, documentary or otherwise.

The magnitude of this achievement, this depiction of a diseased and corrupt society that is in so many ways similar to our own, cannot be understated.

I have watched hundreds of hours of war crimes, genocides and miscarriages of justice carried out by unremarkable men with dimly lit souls. "The Act of Killing" bids to outdo them all.

Atrocity hides beneath a grandfather's gentle smile in "The Act of Killing," Joshua Oppenheimer's remarkable, unnerving documentary portrait of barbarity and its lasting legacies.

As filming continues, the quiet brilliance behind the assignment comes to light.

Ultimately, The Act Of Killing acknowledges that while Oppenheimer may have subtly tortured their conscience, these thugs are paying no real price.

Prepare to be shocked, disgusted, enraged and emotionally devastated. It's the most terrifying film in years.

Train of Thought Derailed: How an Accident Can Affect Your Brain

A survivor of last week's deadly train derailment in Spain illustrates how disaster can alter your mind

    Image: Flickr/elentir (Contando Estrelas)

My cousin Guillermo Cassinello Toscano was on the train that derailed in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, last week when it went around a bend at twice the speed limit. Cassinello heard a loud vibration and then a powerful bump and then found himself surrounded by bloody bodies in wagon number nine. Shaking, he escaped the wreckage through either a door or a hole in the train?he cannot recall?then sat amid the smoke and debris next to the track and began to cry. Seventy-nine passengers died.

Cassinello doesn?t remember everything that happened to him. The same mechanisms that kept his brain sharp enough to escape immediate danger may also make it harder for him both to recall the accident, and to put the trauma behind him. "The normal thing is that the person doesn't remember the moment of the accident or right after," says clinical psychologist Javier Rodriguez Escobar of trauma therapy team Grupo Isis in Seville, who helped treat and study victims of the 2004 Madrid train bombings. That's because the mind and the body enter a more alert but also more stressed state, with trade-offs that can save your life, but harm your mind?s memory-making abilities.

As the train fell over, several changes would have swept through Cassinello?s body. His adrenal glands, near his kidneys, would have released adrenaline (also known as epinephrine) into his bloodstream. The adrenaline would have directed blood to the powerful muscles of his arms and legs, where it would help him escape the wreckage faster. The hormone would have raised his heart and breathing rates. It also would have stimulated his vagus nerve, which runs from his spine to his brain. Although adrenaline cannot cross the blood?brain barrier, the vagus can promote noradrenaline production in the brain. That hormone activates the amygdala, which helps form memories.

Just the right amount of noradrenaline, researchers have found, can boost memory storage; too much can destroy it. Figuring out the balance could allow researchers to harness the hormone. Neuroscientist Christa McIntyre at the University of Texas at Dallas and colleagues have been studying how the chemical shapes memory-making in rats (her team is planning a human trial). When the team stimulated rats? vagus nerves the animals? memories improved. McIntyre has to keep the dose low, however, because other experiments have shown that too much noradrenaline appears to impede memory-making. Researchers are still trying to determine whether the excess noradrenaline directly causes the memory lapses or if the hormone is associated with high stress levels that cause some other chemical system to interfere. "That's the part we don't really understand: if there's too much [noradrenaline] or if there's another system that kicks in and puts a brake on it," McIntyre says.

Cassinello's memory lapses may be due to a noradrenaline overflow. But there may be other explanations for the gaps in his memory. His brain may have narrowed his attention at the time of the crash to only those things that matter for survival, such as escaping the train, leading him to ignore things that do not, such as whether the path out of the train passed through a door or a hole. Researchers have shown that humans report selective hearing during stressful events and that stressed people pay attention to different things than do unstressed people (pdf).

Yelp narrows 2Q loss, raises sales view for year

(AP) ? Yelp Inc. narrowed its second-quarter loss as it attracted more reviews and visitors, and website raised its sales forecast for the year Wednesday.

The quarter's loss was smaller and revenue growth was bigger than analysts had expected. Yelp shares gained more than 5 percent in after-hours trading.

Yelp is getting clicks, helping it increase its ad sales. It drew 108 million unique visitors per month in the second quarter, a 38 percent increase from a year earlier. It's also adding content, with 42.5 million total reviews, up 41 percent from a year ago.

But it's still losing money. The company reported a loss of $878,000, or a penny per share, compared with a loss of $2 million, or 3 cents per share, in the April-June period last year. Revenue soared 69 percent to $55 million.

Analysts expected a loss of 4 cents per share on $53.3 million in revenue, according to a FactSet survey.

The San Francisco company predicted revenue of $58 million to $59 million in the third quarter revenue and raised its outlook for the year to $222 million to $224 million from its previous guidance of $216 million to $218 million.

Both would slightly beat the forecasts of analysts, who were expecting $57.3 million in the September quarter and $219.8 million for all of 2013.

Yelp is trying to expand its presence on mobile devices, where Yelp users conduct about 59 percent of their searches. It's also launching features to draw advertisers to the site, and this month it acquired the SeatMe app used to reserve seats in restaurants.

The company is also spending much more as it grows. Sales and marketing costs rose 52 percent to $30.8 million, while research and development expense jumped 86 percent to $8 million and overhead costs climbed 69 percent to $10.1 million.

The stock ended regular trading up a penny at $41.80. Shares have more than doubled this year. In aftermarket trading Wednesday, they added $2.25, or 5.4 percent, to $44.05.

Weiner Aide Barbara Morgan Rips Olivia Nuzzi In ... - Business Insider

    Anthony Weiner sexting

    REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton

A spokeswoman for New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner went on an expletive-laden rant at a former campaign intern who had written an unflattering portrayal of the campaign in the New York Daily News.

Here is what Weiner spokeswoman Barbara Morgan called the former intern, Olivia Nuzzi, in comments to Talking Points Memo's Hunter Walker: "bitch," "slutbag," "twat," and "cunt." She also threatened to sue her.

What prompted this? Nuzzi wrote a piece in the Daily News?published Tuesday morning that served as a tell-all.

She wrote that many interns joined the Weiner campaign to get closer to his wife, Huma Abedin, with hopes of landing a role on any potential campaign for Hillary Clinton in 2016. She said that one campaign staffer had left because he had only been paid one-third of what he was promised. And she said that Weiner had incorrectly referred to multiple interns as "Monica."

We emailed Morgan to see if she intended her comments to be seen.

Her response: "NO NO NO NO NO."

    Here is Morgan's full statement:

"In a moment of frustration, I used inappropriate language in what I thought was an off the record conversation. It was wrong and I am very sorry, which is what I said tonight when I called and emailed Olivia to apologize."

Josh Marshall, the editor and publisher of TPM, said, however, that the conversation "definitely" came on the record. He said it came during an interview for an unrelated story about Weiner's fundraising numbers.

"During that discussion, Morgan launched into a very animated series of comments about Nuzzi, which we quote in the piece," Marshall said in an email.

Sprint posts wider quarterly loss on steep costs

    By Sinead Carew

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sprint Corp , the No. 3 U.S. mobile service provider, posted a wider quarterly loss due to hefty costs from shutting down its older Nextel network and it warned that customer defections would continue to hurt it in coming quarters.

Shares in Sprint, which recently sold 78 percent of its shares to Japan's SoftBank Corp , rose 1 percent on Tuesday morning as its revenue was better than expected.

But analysts worried whether Sprint can turn around subscriber losses in a bitterly competitive market where it needs to catch up to stronger rivals Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc and smaller rival T-Mobile US is offering service price discounts.

Moffett Research analyst Craig Moffett is concerned that it might have to cut service prices in order to return to reporting quarterly net customer additions again.

"The risk of a price war is much higher than it has been in the past," said Moffett, who is worried that service discounts at will lure away Sprint customers. "People are struggling with concerns about what its going to cost to turn this ship around in particular in terms of competition."

Sprint has struggled with Nextel customer losses since it bought that company in 2005 and it finally shut down the network in the second quarter. While it expects savings from the shutdown, it will still be hurt by related customer defections, known in the industry as churn, this quarter.

And Sprint, which will use SoftBank investments and spectrum from Clearwire to beef up its network, also expects customers to keep leaving while it works on a network upgrade for the rest of this year as its high-speed data service trails rivals'.

"Between now and then, those will be the headwinds," Sprint Chief Executive Dan Hesse told Reuters.

Some businesses who used the Nextel service have also decided to pull their employees from the Sprint network because of the Nextel network shutdown according to Hesse who expects the biggest exodus of those customers this quarter.

Nomura analyst Michael McCormack said the report was in line with his expectations but he worried about future quarters.

"They will have a hard time balancing return to subscriber growth against profitability," McCormack said.

Sprint lost 1.045 million contract customers in the quarter, more than the average estimate for a loss of almost 972,000 by four analysts contacted by Reuters. Their estimates ranged from a loss of 885,000 to 1.1 million customers.

The company said its Sprint-branded service added 194,000 customers in the quarter, but it would have posted a net decline of 170,000 without 364,000 users who moved from the Nextel network to the Sprint service.

In comparison, the top U.S. mobile service Verizon Wireless had 941,000 subscriber additions and the No. 2 provider AT&T added over 550,000 net new subscribers in the second quarter.

Sprint's second-quarter loss widened to $1.6 billion, or 53 cents per share, from loss of $1.4 billion, or 46 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. Excluding unusual items Sprint's loss would have been 31 cents per share, or a penny worse than Wall Street expectations, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose to $8.88 billion from $8.84 billion and was ahead of Wall Street estimates closer to $8.7 billion.

Sprint said this was driven by average revenue per user (ARPU) on the Sprint network, which increased to $64.20 in the quarter from $63.38 in the year-ago quarter as its customers spent more on wireless data services such as mobile web surfing.

"The highlight of the quarter for us was revenue and ARPU," said Hesse, who expects more ARPU growth in the coming quarters.

While Sprint has struggled to compete for years, SoftBank Chief Executive and founder Masayoshi Son is betting that he can help it to become a much stronger competitor.

SoftBank paid $21.6 billion to take control of Sprint on July 10 after months of battling with rival bidder Dish Network Corp . SoftBank helped Sprint - previously the majority owner of Clearwire Corp - to take full control of Clearwire so it can use Clearwire's spectrum to boost Sprint's network.

After SoftBank's earnings report, also on Tuesday Son acknowledged that "Sprint's fight is no easy task" because of stiff competition from Verizon and AT&T.

Sprint said it expects 2013 adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization (OIBDA) between 5.1 billion and $5.3 billion, including non-cash one-time costs related to its SoftBank deal and its July buyout of Clearwire.

But excluding these costs, Sprint said its 2013 target was for adjusted OIBDA between $5.5 billion and $5.7 billion, which is ahead of its previous goal to reach the high end of a $5.2 billion to $5.5 billion target range.

Sprint set its 2013 capital spending budget at $8 billion. Its shares were up 10 cents or 1.8 percent at $5.85 on the New York Stock Exchange after the news.

ARLINGTON, Va.The Department of the Navy (DoN) and City of Chicago this month kicked off a unique collaboration to give high school and community college students an intense, hands-on experience in naval-relevant science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.

Critical MASS (Midwest Association for Science and Service) is a five-year, $2 million investment that will bring enrichment programs to seven Chicago high schools, including five early college institutions driven by STEM curricula. It will serve as a national model for integrating new technologies into STEM education.

The program will feature competitions, field trips and mentoring opportunities. Officials will rely on several naval STEM programs and projectsincluding the Technovation Challenge, SeaPerch, Gooru and Sally Ride Scienceto enhance the curriculum, which will cover everything from aero and hydrodynamics to solid-state electrical components and nuclear reactions.

"Our Navy needs engineers, naval architects and weapons developers," said Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Matthew L. Klunder. "More than half of our science and engineering professionals will be eligible for retirement by 2020, so we have to develop these important skills in the generation going through high school right now."

Klunder leads the Office of Naval Research (ONR), which is the DoN's executive agent for STEM-related initiatives. The collaboration with Chicago Public Schools will provide STEM enrichment programs that span ninth grade to community college, both during the academic school year and the summer.

"President Obama called on the nation to provide our children with the education and skills they need to excel in school and the careers of tomorrow," said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "By partnering with the Department of the Navy, we are taking a huge step towards this goal, building upon our students' science, technology and math skills and supporting them with real-world experiences that open the doors to future career options."

Critical MASS began the week of July 15 with its initial summer camp and a Curriculum Day, which brought together Navy experts, curriculum designers, representatives from the mayor of Chicago's office, school administrators, teachers and City Colleges of Chicago faculty members for a discussion of programming opportunities in both after-school and in-class environments.

"When you have this many high-powered leaders in one room, you run the risk of each one pushing a different agenda," said Cmdr. Joseph Cohn, ONR's deputy director of research for STEM. "But our agenda was a common oneimproving the quality of STEM education today, to secure the future for the Navy, Marine Corps and our nation."

The goals of the five-year program call for increasing:

    • interest in, and relevance of, STEM learning in Chicago-area high schools
    • STEM competency in Chicago high schools
    • numbers of academically prepared students entering community colleges and four-year institutions in STEM fields
    • competitiveness and diversity of students applying for admission to military service academies or ROTC programs
    • awareness and interest in STEM career options with the DoN
    • women and minority participation in STEM.

"The hope is that the model set forth in Chicago will be replicated by cities across the nation," Cohn said.

    ###

ONR provides the science and technology necessary to maintain the Navy and Marine Corps' technological advantage. Through its affiliates, ONR is a leader in science and technology with engagement in 50 states, 70 countries, 1,035 institutions of higher learning and 914 industry partners. ONR employs approximately 1,400 people, comprising uniformed, civilian and contract personnel, with additional employees at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C.

    Samsung NX2000

The Samsung NX2000 ($649.99 direct) is a mid-level body in Samsung's NX mirrorless camera lineup. It's aimed squarely at fans of touch-screen devices, as it eschews most physical controls in favor of a big 3.7-inch rear LCD. Its image quality is excellent, thanks to a big 20-megapixel APS-C image sensor that captures impressive photos through ISO 1600, but performance is slow and I found the touch-based interface to be cumbersome to use, especially when shooting in very bright light. But I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to camera controls; touch-screen aficionados will feel right at home. There's another Samsung mirrorless camera that we liked more; the NX300 is our current Editors' Choice for mirrorless cameras. It's a bit more expensive, but also more capable, as it sports both a tilting touch-screen and traditional controls.

    Design and Features
The NX2000 is pretty small, especially when you consider the big image sensor that it contains. It measures 2.5 by 4.7 by 1.4 inches (HWD) and weighs just half a pound without a lens. It's not that far off in size or shape from the Sony Alpha NEX-3N (2.3 by 4.4 by 1.4 inches, 9.5 ounces). The 3N also uses an APS-C image sensor, but manages to squeeze a tilting rear display and an in-body flash into its body?the NX2000 offers neither, but does include a small external flash.

Unlike other interchangeable lens cameras, you won't find a lot of controls on the NX2000's body. There's a control wheel on the top plate, along with the Direct Link Wi-Fi button, the power switch, and shutter release. You'll find a movie record button, Home button, and image playback button to the right of the rear LCD, and an iFn control button on most lenses.

The control wheel takes a bit of getting used to. Simply turning it brings up an on-screen menu that allows you to adjust the shooting mode. You can do so by touch, or by turning the wheel to select a setting and pushing it in to confirm. Pushing the wheel in while shooting changes its behavior; if you're in aperture priority or program mode, the first press gives you direct control over the f-stop, and the second changes that to exposure compensation. The behavior is the same in shutter priority mode, substituting the shutter speed for the f-stop. In manual mode you can only adjust the aperture orthe shutter speed; the exposure compensation bar moves on its own to let you know if your shot is over or underexposed. You can shoot in manual mode with the ISO set to auto, giving you the option of controlling the depth of field and shutter speed without having to constantly fiddle with the ISO in order to get a proper exposure.

The iFn button, located on most NX lenses, comes into play with this body more than with other NX cameras. It makes up for some of the shortcomings. Pressing it gives you access to control a number of shooting settings, including the aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and digital zoom. Each press brings up a different setting. You can use the control wheel or the manual focus ring to adjust the setting, and press the control wheel in or half-press the shutter to set it and dismiss the menu.

The rear display is huge at 3.7 inches; it occupies almost the entirety of the NX2000's backside. It's quite sharp thanks to a 1,152k-dot resolution, and quite responsive to the touch. But I struggled to frame images when shooting outdoors on a bright summer afternoon. I also had the tiny Pentax Q7 with me, and its rear display was much easier to see in bright light. It wouldn't be as much of an issue if the screen titled, like the one on the NX300, so that you could better adjust to avoid glare, or if there was an EVF available. Shooters who are interested in a mirrorless camera and don't want to give up an eye-level finder should consider the Olympus PEN E-PL5; its rear screen tilts, and it has an accessory port so that you can add the inexpensive VF-3 ($180) or top-end VF-4 electronic viewfinder.

Touch controls are always active. There's a big box that represents the focus area, and you can move it and refocus the camera with a tap on the display; the camera can also be set to take the shot with a touch, rather than just refocusing. There's also a tracking option, where the camera will attempt to follow the object which you touched as it moves through the frame. All of these settings are accessed via the Touch AF setting on the left side of the display. Below that is a touch control that changes how much information is shown; you can set the camera to display the minimum, or to add current shooting settings, a live histogram, and a virtual horizon indicator. If you like the NX2000, but are turned off by the touch interface, consider the NX1100. It's the same camera as the NX1000 that we reviewed last year, with the added addition of a copy of Adobe Lightroom.

The other major touch areas on the display are the Menu (bottom left) and Fn (bottom right) controls. Menu does what you would expect it to; it gives you access to a detailed list of camera settings, including control over manual focus peaking, sound controls, and video quality options. The Fn menu brings up the Smart Panel, which allows you to see and adjust shooting settings from one place. From here you can adjust the shutter speed, f-stop, exposure value compensation setting, ISO, white balance, JPG color settings (including some art filters that will make Instagrammers happy), metering pattern, autofocus mode, drive mode, and flash settings.

Wi-Fi is built into the camera, and like recent Samsung models, it's one of the best implementations you'll find. There are numerous ways to share images, including integration with Facebook, email, Picasa, YouTube, and SkyDrive, all directly from the camera. You can also set up files to back up automatically to your PC, and use the free Samsung Smart Camera app to send photos directly to your iOS or Android device. If you have other Samsung Wi-Fi devices in your home, you can use Samsung Link to share photos with them via the DLNA protocol. There's also a Remote Viewfinder function; it works with an app on your phone or tablet and allows you to control the camera via your phone's screen. NFC pairing is supported if your phone or tablet supports that technology. The NX2000 also supports the company's unique 45mm f/1.8 2D/3D lens; the NX300 is the only other body available with support for this lens.

Monogamy evolved as a mating strategy: New research indicates that social monogamy evolved as a result of competition

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Social monogamy, where one breeding female and one breeding male are closely associated with each other over several breeding seasons, appears to have evolved as a mating strategy, new research reveals. It was previously suspected that social monogamy resulted from a need for extra parental care by the father.

    Brandt Snedeker wins Canadian Open

OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) ? Zoe Olivia Mahan can expect something special from Brandt Snedeker.

Snedeker won the Canadian Open on Sunday, a day after Hunter Mahan withdrew with the lead before the third round when his wife went into labor. Kandi Mahan gave birth to daughter Zoe Olivia early Sunday in Texas.

"Zoe will be getting a very nice baby gift from me," Snedeker said. "I can't thank Kandi enough for going into labor early. I don't know if I'd be sitting here if she hadn't. But that is a way more important thing than a golf tournament. I missed a golf tournament when my first was born, and it was the best decision I ever made. I'm sure Hunter would say the same thing."

    Snedeker closed with 2-under 70 for a three-stroke victory.

"Just ecstatic right now," Snedeker said. "This is a tournament I said early on in my career I wanted to win just because my caddie (Scott Vail) is actually from Canada and it's his national open. It meant a lot to him, meant a lot to me. Third-oldest tournament on tour and it's got some great history to it, and now to put my name on that trophy it means a lot."

Snedeker finished at 16-under 272. The six-time PGA Tour winner also won the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February.

"It feels great to get a win," Snedeker said. "To validate all the hard work I've put in over the past three months where I haven't played my best and know that I'm working on the right stuff and able to hold up under some pretty serious pressure this afternoon. To win a tournament like this with those pivotal holes coming down the stretch means a lot."

Snedeker had two birdies and a bogey on the front nine. He birdied the par-4 10th to move to 16 under, but gave the shot back on the par-3 12th. He birdied the par-5 16th and parred the final two holes.

"I hung in there really well and made the key putts I needed to and I was able to survive," Snedeker said. "That's what today is all about."

Dustin Johnson, William McGirt, Matt Kuchar and Jason Bohn tied for second.

Johnson was tied for the lead after a birdie on No. 16, then drove out of bounds and hit the lip of a fairway bunker en route to a triple-bogey 7 on the par-4 17th. He finished with a 70.

"I was playing really well," Johnson said. "Really confident, swinging the driver really good. So you know, it's a driver hole for me, and I just blocked it a little bit. Made a poor swing. ... Not too happy, but I felt really good with my golf game. ... It's nothing, nothing to worry about. I'll go get them next weekend."

McGirt had a 68, and Kuchar and Bohn shot 71.

David Hearn was the top Canadian, shooting a 73 to tie for 44th at 4 under.

"It wasn't the finish that I was really looking for. I had a nice chance today," said Hearn, a playoff loser in the John Deere Classic. "I'll take away some positives from the week. I appreciate the support from everyone here this week and it always feels good to play at home."

Mike Weir tied for 49th at 3 under after a 72.

"I'm playing fine. Just missing too many short putts," Weir said. "I missed a number the last couple days inside 6, 7 feet, just missing way too many of those. You need those to keep your round going sometimes and I just didn't capitalize when I had opportunities."

Pat Fletcher, born in England, was the last Canadian winner, taking the 1954 event at Point Grey in Vancouver. Carl Keffer is the only Canadian-born champion, winning in 1909 and 1914. Albert Murray, a Canadian also born in England, won in 1908 and 1913.

The 2014 tournament will be played at Royal Montreal.

ONEIDA >> After recovering from lymphoma two years ago, Terrie Lanz recently returned to the hospital with bone cancer, needing a jaw replacement. After spending almost three weeks in the hospital, Lanz didn?t have a home to return to - recent flooding all but destroyed it.

So now, Lanz and his family are seeking aid.

The surgery has taken its toll on Lanz. After removing part of his lower tibula to replace parts of his jaw and cutting out part of his tongue, he has a hard time speaking and walking. Lanz has had to return to the hospital every week in order to repair skin grafts and monitor his condition.

After losing his job as a press operator at the Oneida Daily Dispatch in 2011 due to press operations moving to Syracuse, Lanz has been on and off unemployment due to his medical condition. Finally in August, Lanz found a job working through a temporary employment agency in Oneida. He was hired full-time at the Hood facility in Vernon in November. Because of the short duration of his employment, he has been unable to receive disability for his surgery and inability to work during recovery.

To make matters worse, while Lanz was in the hospital after his surgery, his home was seriously damaged during the June 28 flood. Lanz, along with his daughter Emilee and wife Ronda, have been living in the Days Inn in Canastota for almost a month. They are not sure how much longer they can continue to live outside of their home.

Meanwhile, Emilee is on her way to Herkimer Community College, a process that was severely dampened when flood waters destroyed some of the necessary paperwork for her enrollment. She may not be able to go to school until the spring semester in January. Her graduation party, scheduled to take place at their home on Stoddard Street, was cancelled; however, the family is thankful for the Oneida American Legion, which hosted the event and helped with most of its costs, the rest donated by family and friends.

The family is currently living off donations from family, friends, Hood, the small savings they have left and the small salary their son Eric makes working for Ralston?s Party Supply. Lanz said he will have to undergo at least six months of recovery, but that process may be significantly longer due to radiation therapy.

?After everything and therapy, I?m not sure I?ll be able to stand for my eight hour shifts,? Lanz said, pointing to the skin graft on his leg covering the partial tibula. He said it will depend on his physical therapy results whether he may be able to work again.

Lanz and his wife Ronda said they are extremely grateful for everything people have done to help them, though they are not sure how they will continue to afford medical costs and the repair costs for their home. With both of their children hopefully going to college in the fall, they plan to get electricity restored to their home and live in the upstairs until they can get the first floor repaired; however, Ronda said she?safraid the stairs may be impassible for Terrie. They are waiting on state aid to see if they can begin repairing their home.

Lanz? family has set up a benefit to not only help with his medical costs, but aid the family in housing repairs and costs. The benefit will take place Aug. 17 at Jack?s or Better on Lake Road in Oneida at 1 p.m. The family will host basket raffles, food, live music and a 50/50 raffle. Entrance is $10 per person, kids under 12 get in for free. Tickets are available by calling 761-9681, 264-5269 or at Jack?s or Better.
