Children's tablet maker suing Toys R Us over Tabeo design

Children's tablet maker suing Toys R Us over Tabeo design

Currently lawsuits are all the rage in the tech industry, however it's somewhat of a sad day when the ill-effects of corporate hardball trickle down to children's toys. Nabi tablet maker Fuhu filed a lawsuit at a San Diego, California federal court claiming that mega retailer Toys R Us stole its product's trade secrets for the development of its forthcoming Tabeo tablet for children. Fuhu alleges that last year Toys R Us agreed to exclusively carry the Nabi tablet in order to gain access to confidential information before launching a tablet of its own. The partnership between the two companies ended in January and Toys R Us has since announced its plans to release its Tabeo tablet this fall. Fuhu is suing for an undisclosed sum and requesting that Toys R Us relinquish its stock of Tabeo tablets. It's too early to tell if this lawsuit will have an impact on the Tabeo's launch plans, but if Fuhu has its way, Toys R Us will receive a lump of coal and a court order this holiday season. Bah, humbug!

Bizarre tumor case may lead to custom cancer care

It's a medical nightmare: a 24-year-old man endures 350 surgeries since childhood to remove growths that keep coming back in his throat and have spread to his lungs, threatening his life. Now doctors have found a way to help him by way of a scientific coup that holds promise for millions of cancer patients.

The bizarre case is the first use in a patient of a new discovery: how to keep ordinary and cancerous cells alive indefinitely in the lab.

The discovery allows doctors to grow "mini tumors" from each patient's cancer in a lab dish, then test various drugs or combinations on them to see which works best. It takes only a few cells from a biopsy and less than two weeks to do, with materials and methods common in most hospitals.

Although the approach needs much more testing against many different types of cancer, researchers think it could offer a cheap, simple way to personalize treatment without having to analyze each patient's genes.

"We see a lot of potential for it," said one study leader, Dr. Richard Schlegel, pathology chief at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington. "Almost everyone could do it easily."

An independent expert agreed.

For infections, it's routine to grow bacteria from a patient in lab dishes to see which antibiotics work best, Dr. George Q. Daley of Children's Hospital Boston and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute said in an email. "But this has never been possible with cancer cells because they don't easily grow in culture," he said.

The new technique may reveal in advance whether a person would be helped by a specific chemotherapy, without risking side effects and lost time if the drug doesn't work. "Pretty nifty," Daley wrote.

In the case of the 24-year-old, described in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, lab-dish tests suggested that a drug used to treat a type of blood cancer and some other unrelated conditions might help.

It's not a drug that doctors would have thought to try, because the man technically does not have cancer. But his lung tumor shrank after a few months of treatment, and he has been stable for more than a year. He still has to have operations to remove throat growths that keep coming back, but only about once every five months.

The man, an information technology specialist in suburban Washington who asked to remain anonymous to protect his privacy, has recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, or RRP. It's usually due to infection at birth with certain types of a virus, HPV, that causes genital warts.

The condition causes wartlike growths in the throat, usually around the voice box. These growths usually are noncancerous but can turn malignant, and even benign ones can prove fatal if they spread to the lungs. The main treatment is surgery, usually with lasers to vaporize the growths and keep them from choking off the airway or making it hard to talk.

About 10,000 or more people in the U.S. have the disease, said Jennifer Woo, president of the RRP Foundation. Woo, 29, is a medical student at Georgetown and one of the researchers on the study. She also has the condition but said it is confined to her throat and has required only about 20 surgeries so far.

The man in the study has a much more serious case.

"I was diagnosed when I was 3 or 4. At first, I had to have surgery every 7 to 10 days," the man said in a phone interview. "I get short of breath and my voice will get more hoarse."

Two years ago, the growths to his lungs became extensive and life-threatening, and his physician, Dr. Scott Myers, described the condition at a meeting of Georgetown hospital specialists. "It's crushing the airway," Myers said.

Doctors suggested that the new lab method pioneered by Schlegel and others might help. It borrows an idea from stem cell researchers: adding mouse cells for nourishment, plus a chemical that prevents cell death to an ordinary lab culture medium. That enabled healthy and cancerous cells to keep growing indefinitely.

Researchers grew "mini tumors" from the man's lung mass and from healthy tissue and screened various drugs against them. One proved ineffective. Another worked against the tumor but at too high a dose to be safe. The third did the trick.

A similar approach could let doctors screen drugs for cancer patients.

"What could be more personalized than taking this person's cell, growing it in culture, finding a drug to treat them and then treat them?" said Doug Melton, co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. The Georgetown method gives an answer quickly enough that it could save lives, he said.

Tyler Jacks, a cancer researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and former president of the American Association for Cancer Research, said the next step is to show that this could work for many different cancers and that it leads to better outcomes in patients.

"It seems to have worked in this one instance, but other tumors might prove to be more challenging," he said.

The National Institutes of Health paid for much of this work and has already sent research teams to Georgetown to learn the method. About a dozen other universities have done the same, Schlegel said.

So far, his lab has grown prostate, breast, lung and colon cancer cells.

Georgetown University is seeking a patent on the method.

HUDA 'overlooking' apex court ruling - Real Estate India

Repeated demands for higher land cost allottees? nightmare

Naveen S Garewal
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 23

When HUDA advertised its prestigious Sector 26 Panchkula extension scheme around two decades ago, Col MS Mohan, a serving helicopter pilot in the Army, thought his post-retirement woes were over. His joy of owning a property has turned into a nightmare with HUDA repeatedly demanding escalated plot price every few years. Thousands of HUDA allottees in Panchkula extension are a harassed lot like Col MS Mohan.

HUDA is taking advantage of a clause in the allotment letter which says: ?Rate is tentative and enhanced compensation for land would be recoverable from the plot holder if awarded by court in future?. For a plot that was supposed to cost Col Mohan Rs 2.94 lakh , he would pay nearly Rs 21 lakh over 18 years after he makes two more additional payments. This includes interest, extension fee etc.

HUDA has sent Col Mohan another notice demanding Rs 9 lakh. This money has to be paid to the farmers whose land was acquired by HUDA for these plots as the farmers have won a legal case for enhancement of compensation. ?There are hundreds of residents in Sector 25, 26, 27 and 28 in Panchkula and many others living in different HUDA schemes who have to face a similar predicament for HUDA?s oversight in acquiring properties free of legal tangle?, Col Mohan says.

A senior HUDA official said HUDA was a ?no profit, no loss? institution and all liabilities pertaining to areas developed by it were borne by the beneficiaries. This view is, however, not shared by the HUDA allottees, who say that the government must bail out HUDA and not burden the allottees two decades after they were given plots. ?Had we had known that the liability is going to last a lifetime, we would have gone for other avenues available at that time?, is a majority view of the Joint Action Committee, Panchkula (JACP), which is espousing the cause of those affected.

HUDA is going ahead with recovering enhanced compensation from the allottees despite a ruling of a Division Bench of Justice GS Singhvi and Justice SJ Mukhopadhaya of the Supreme Court in a case against the Haryana Housing Board where the court ruled: ?Once the allottee pays the total price, he may not be subjected to the burden of additional cost after a number of years?. This was in a case where the board had asked for additional cost from owners of EWS Housing Flats after 10 years of allotment.

The JACP president has in representations sent to the Estate Officer, HUDA, from time to time, have opposed the enhanced compensation. HUDA is charging 15 per cent interest on a compounding basis to those delaying payments which is against HUDA?s own policy of charging simple interest.

It has highlighted that many beneficiaries are handicapped persons or award winners who were allotted plots on discretion. They too have been subjected to high compensation escalation that they cannot afford to pay. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued an order to help resolve the issue but the matter is awaiting a suitable solution.

SUPREME COURT RULING

HUDA is going ahead with recovering enhanced compensation from the allottees despite a ruling of a Division Bench comprising Justice GS Singhvi and Justice SJ Mukhopadhaya of the Supreme Court in a case against the Haryana Housing Board where the court ruled: ?Once the allottee pays the total price, he may not be subjected to the burden of additional cost after a number of years?. This was in a case where the board had asked for additional cost from owners of EWS Housing Flats after 10 years of allotment

Fueling the fleet, U.S. Navy looks to the seas

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Refueling U.S. Navy vessels, at sea and underway, is a costly endeavor in terms of logistics, time, fiscal constraints and threats to national security and sailors at sea.

In Fiscal Year 2011, the U.S. Navy Military Sea Lift Command, the primary supplier of fuel and oil to the U.S. Navy fleet, delivered nearly 600 million gallons of fuel to Navy vessels underway, operating 15 fleet replenishment oilers around the globe.

From Seawater to CO2

Scientists at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory are developing a process to extract carbon dioxide (CO2) and produce hydrogen gas (H2) from seawater, subsequently catalytically converting the CO2 and H2 into jet fuel by a gas-to-liquids process.

"The potential payoff is the ability to produce JP-5 fuel stock at sea reducing the logistics tail on fuel delivery with no environmental burden and increasing the Navy's energy security and independence," says research chemist, Dr. Heather Willauer.

NRL has successfully developed and demonstrated technologies for the recovery of CO2 and the production of H2 from seawater using an electrochemical acidification cell, and the conversion of CO2 and H2 to hydrocarbons (organic compounds consisting of hydrogen and carbon) that can be used to produce jet fuel.

"The reduction and hydrogenation of CO2 to form hydrocarbons is accomplished using a catalyst that is similar to those used for Fischer-Tropsch reduction and hydrogenation of carbon monoxide," adds Willauer. "By modifying the surface composition of iron catalysts in fixed-bed reactors, NRL has successfully improved CO2 conversion efficiencies up to 60 percent."

A Renewable Resource

CO2 is an abundant carbon (C) resource in the air and in seawater, with the concentration in the ocean about 140 times greater than that in air. Two to three percent of the CO2 in seawater is dissolved CO2 gas in the form of carbonic acid, one percent is carbonate, and the remaining 96 to 97 percent is bound in bicarbonate. If processes are developed to take advantage of the higher weight per volume concentration of CO2 in seawater, coupled with more efficient catalysts for the heterogeneous catalysis of CO2 and H2, a viable sea-based synthetic fuel process can be envisioned. "With such a process, the Navy could avoid the uncertainties inherent in procuring fuel from foreign sources and/or maintaining long supply lines," Willauer said.

NRL has made significant advances developing carbon capture technologies in the laboratory. In the summer of 2009 a standard commercially available chlorine dioxide cell and an electro-deionization cell were modified to function as electrochemical acidification cells. Using the novel cells both dissolved and bound CO2 were recovered from seawater by re-equilibrating carbonate and bicarbonate to CO2 gas at a seawater pH below 6. In addition to CO2, the cells produced H2 at the cathode as a by-product.

These completed studies assessed the effects of the acidification cell configuration, seawater composition, flow rate, and current on seawater pH levels. The data were used to determine the feasibility of this approach for efficiently extracting large quantities of CO2 from seawater. From these feasibility studies NRL successfully scaled-up and integrated the carbon capture technology into an independent skid to process larger volumes of seawater and evaluate the overall system design and efficiencies.

The major component of the carbon capture skid is a three-chambered electrochemical acidification cell. This cell uses small quantities of electricity to exchange hydrogen ions produced at the anode with sodium ions in the seawater stream. As a result, the seawater is acidified. At the cathode, water is reduced to H2 gas and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is formed. This basic solution may be re-combined with the acidified seawater to return the seawater to its original pH with no additional chemicals. Current and continuing research using this carbon capture skid demonstrates the continuous efficient production of H2 and the recovery of up to 92 percent of CO2 from seawater.

Located at NRL's Center for Corrosion Science & Engineering facility, Key West, Fla., (NRLKW) the carbon capture skid has been tested using seawater from the Gulf of Mexico to simulate conditions that will be encountered in an actual open ocean process for capturing CO2 from seawater and producing H2 gas. Currently NRL is working on process optimization and scale-up. Once these are completed, initial studies predict that jet fuel from seawater would cost in the range of $3 to $6 per gallon to produce.

How it Works: CO2 + H2 = Jet Fuel

NRL has developed a two-step process in the laboratory to convert the CO2 and H2 gathered from the seawater to liquid hydrocarbons. In the first step, an iron-based catalyst has been developed that can achieve CO2 conversion levels up to 60 percent and decrease unwanted methane production from 97 percent to 25 percent in favor of longer-chain unsaturated hydrocarbons (olefins).

In the second step these olefins can be oligomerized (a chemical process that converts monomers, molecules of low molecular weight, to a compound of higher molecular weight by a finite degree of polymerization) into a liquid containing hydrocarbon molecules in the carbon C9-C16 range, suitable for conversion to jet fuel by a nickel-supported catalyst reaction.

Former CIA operative Edwin Wilson dies at 84

SEATTLE (AP) ? Edwin P. Wilson, a former CIA operative who was branded a traitor and convicted of shipping arms to Libya but whose conviction was overturned after he spent two decades in prison, has died. He was 84.

Wilson died Sept. 10 in Seattle from complications from a heart valve replacement surgery, said Craig Emmick, a director at Columbia Funeral Home in Seattle.

Wilson who set up front companies abroad for the CIA and posed as a rich American businessman was convicted in 1983 for shipping 20 tons of C-4 plastic explosives to Libya. At trial, he said he did it to ingratiate himself with the Libyan government at the CIA's request.

A federal judge threw out that conviction in 2003, saying the government failed to correct information about Wilson's service to the CIA that it admitted internally was false.

Wilson had been sentenced to 52 years in prison for selling arms and explosives to Libya in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and for other crimes.

He more than 20 years in prison, mostly in solitary confinement, until he was released in 2004. He then moved to Edmonds, Wash., north of Seattle, to live with his brother.

"Our family always supported him and believed in him," his nephew, Scott Wilson, said Saturday, adding that biggest part of his uncle's vindication was "that the label of being a traitor would be taken off."

"He never considered himself a traitor of course," Wilson added.

While in prison, Wilson sought to prove his innocence by using the Freedom of Information Act to request government documents.

Even after he was released, the man once described as a "death merchant" and "terrorist" worked to clear his name.

"I can't think of one thing I did that I have any guilt about," Wilson told seattlepi.com in a 2006 interview. "I didn't hurt anybody. I didn't get anyone killed."

Wilson filed a civil lawsuit against seven former federal prosecutors and a former executive director of the CIA, but a judge in Houston dismissed the case in 2007, according to Seattlepi.com.

"He wanted to try to hold the people accountable that helped put him into prison," his nephew said. "But he was never bitter."

Wilson was born May 3, 1928, to a farming family in Nampa, Idaho. He worked as a merchant seaman, and earned a psychology degree from the University of Portland in 1953. He joined the Marines and fought in the last days of the Korean War, according to his death notice. He went to work for the Central Intelligence Agency in 1955 after being discharged from the Marines.

After leaving the CIA in 1971, he made millions in the arms trade and bought a sprawling farm in a tony part of Northern Virginia, where he entertained generals, CIA officials and congressmen, according to a 2004 Washington Post article.

"I had a couple of villas that were very, very nice," he told the Washington Post at the time. "I had Pakistani houseboys and I had Libyans working for me, typing up proposals in Arabic."

In 1982, he was lured out of hiding in Libya and brought to New York for arrest.

A federal court in Virginia convicted him of exporting firearms to Libya without permission and sentenced him to 10 years. He was convicted in Texas in 1983, receiving a 17-year sentence for similar crimes.

A New York court sentenced him to 25 years, to run consecutively with the Texas and Virginia sentences, for attempted murder, criminal solicitation and other charges involving claims that Wilson conspired behind bars to have witnesses and prosecutors killed.

Simple Panacotta - Home and Parenting

I love dessert! Every weekend, we normally have small gathering with friends at home. I get the benefit of getting visited often instead of visiting other houses because I am pregnant ? yeah, that!

Last week, there were only a handful who went because the month has been very busy for all of us. I cooked lunch as usual but for some reason, I crave for desserts on weekend.? There was nothing in the fridge, thus, I asked my little girl to come with me to the nearby supermarket to buy the ingredients ? I will make a Panacotta (that?s my mindset).

Off we go and got what I wanted except the strawberries so I opted for a canned of mixed tropical fruits. Here?s the recipe of what I did:

Panacotta Recipe:

400 grams heavy cream

1/2 cup full cream milk

100 grams sugar

1 sachet gelatin powder (or agar-agar for Asian)

Mixed Fruits

Procedure:

- Cook the gelatin powder as instructed in the pack ? normally boil water and add the powder

- Mix full cream milk, sugar, heavy cream and bring it to boil

- Add the gelatin mix and stir

- Put into a mold, let cool and add your fruits on top!

I don?t have a mold at home but I have several cute wine glass so I made use of them. I put a layer of the gelatin/cream mix, let it cool a bit then I added some fruits. I added another layer of gelatin/cream mix and finally put some more fruits at the top!

It was yum-oh! I felt like eating panacotta and fruit salad in one. I?m glad there wasn?t any strawberries in the supermarket that day because I got to try the mixed tropical fruit for this recipe. Try it!
