Woman held in NYC subway death

By The Associated Press

NEW YORK?? A woman is in custody in the death of a man who was shoved in front of a speeding subway train, and she "made statements implicating herself," New York City police said Saturday.

Detectives questioned her but aren't releasing the 31-year-old suspect's name until she is formally charged, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said in a brief statement. Among other things, investigators were arranging for witnesses to positively identify the woman in custody as the attacker, police said.

Sunando Sen, a 46-year-old Queens resident who was born in India and ran a printing shop, died Thursday night when a woman who had been muttering to herself on a train platform in Queens suddenly knocked him on the tracks as a train entered the station.

The woman fled after the attack. Police released security camera video showing her running from the station.

The attack was the second time this month that someone was pushed to their death in a New York City subway station. A homeless man was arrested in early December and accused of shoving a man in front of a train in Times Square. He is awaiting trial, and claimed he acted in self-defense.

Further details on how police managed to identify the suspect in Sen's death were not immediately available.

Investigators had been following up on tips from people who had seen the security video and were checking homeless shelters and psychiatric units in an attempt to identify the woman.

It was unclear whether she had any connection to Sen. Witnesses told police the two hadn't interacted on the platform as they both waited for the train.

(AP) ? Arriving in a limo, Donna Galluzzo and Lisa Gorney had all the trappings of a traditional wedding: Rings, flowers, wedding vows, an entourage and a friend to officiate.

With tears in their eyes, they were among the first gay couples to exchange wedding vows early Saturday morning after Maine's same-sex marriage law went into effect at midnight.

"We're paving the way for people to go after us. I think it's just amazing. It's freeing. It's what's right," an emotionally drained Gorney said after their ceremony in front of City Hall.

After waiting years and seeing marriage rights nearly awarded and then retracted, gay couples in Maine's largest city didn't have to wait a moment longer than necessary to wed, with licenses issued at the stroke of midnight as the law went into effect.

Steven Bridges and Michael Snell were the first in line, and they received cheers from more than 200 people waiting outside after they wed in the clerk's office.

"It's historic. We've waited our entire lives for this," said Bridges, a retail manager, who's been in a relationship with the Snell, a massage therapist, for nine years. Bridges, 42, and Snell, 53, wore lavender and purple carnations on black T-shirts with the words "Love is love."

Voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington state approved gay marriage in November, making them the first states to do so by popular vote. Gay marriage already was legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia, but those laws were either enacted by lawmakers or through court rulings.

In Maine, Gov. Paul LePage signed off on the certified election results on Nov. 29, so the new law was to go into effect 30 days from that date. The law already is in effect in Washington state; Maryland's takes effect on Tuesday, the first day of 2013.

Nobody knew exactly how many couples would be rushing to get their marriage licenses early Saturday in Maine. Falmouth joined Portland in opening at midnight. Other communities including Bangor, Brunswick and Augusta planned to hold special Saturday hours.

In Portland, the mood was festive with the crowd cheering and horns sounding at midnight as Bridges and Snell began filling out paperwork in the clerk's office in Portland City Hall. There were free carnation boutonnieres and cupcakes, and a jazz trio played.

Outside, the raucous group that gathered in front of the building cheered Bridges and Snell as if they were rock stars and broke into the Beatles' "All You Need is Love."

Fourteen couples received marriage licenses, and five of them married on the spot, a city spokeswoman said. Many of those who received their marriage license were middle-aged, and some said they never envisioned a day when gay couples could wed just like straight couples.

"I came out years ago and the only thing we wanted was to not get beaten up," said Steven Jones, 50, who married his partner, Jamous Lizotte, on his 35th birthday.

Not everyone was getting married right away.

Suzanne Blackburn and Joanie Kunian, of Portland, were among those in line to get their license at midnight, but they planned to have their marriage ceremony later. One of their grandchildren wanted them to get married on Valentine's Day.

"I don't think that we dared to dream too big until we had the governor's signature," Blackburn said. "That's why it's so important, because it feels real."

Bridges and Snell already considered themselves married because they'd held a commitment ceremony attended by friends and family six years ago. Nonetheless, they thought it was important to make it official under state law, as Snell's two daughters watched.

Katie and Carolyn Snell, the daughters, said the ceremony made formal what they knew all along to be true about the couple.

"It's just a piece of paper," said Katie Snell. "Their love has been there, their commitment has been there, all along. It's the last step to make it a true official marriage because everything else has been there from the start."

NHL makes new offer; lockout enters critical stage

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL made a new offer to the players' association, hoping to spark talks toward ending the long lockout and saving the hockey season.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Friday the league presented its proposal Thursday and was waiting for a response. The sides haven't met in person since a second round of talks with a federal mediator broke down Dec. 13.

The lockout has reached its 104th day, and the NHL said it doesn't want a season of less than 48 games. That means a deal would need to be reached mid-January.

"We delivered to the union a new, comprehensive proposal for a successor CBA," Daly said in a statement Friday. "We are not prepared to discuss the details of our proposal at this time. We are hopeful that once the union's staff and negotiating committee have had an opportunity to thoroughly review and consider our new proposal, they will share it with the players. We want to be back on the ice as soon as possible."

A person familiar with key points of the offer told The Associated Press that the league proposed raising the limit of individual free-agent contracts to six years from five ? seven years if a team re-signs its own player; raising the salary variance from one year to another to 10 percent, up from 5 percent; and one compliance buyout for the 2013-14 season that wouldn't count toward a team's salary cap but would be included in the overall players' share of income.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the new offer were not being discussed publicly.

The NHL maintained the deferred payment amount of $300 million it offered in its previous proposal, an increase from an earlier offer of $211 million. The initial $300 million offer was pulled off the table after negotiations broke off earlier this month.

The latest proposal is for 10 years, running through the 2021-22 season, with both sides having the right to opt out after eight years.

A conference call with the players' association's negotiating committee and its executive board was scheduled for Friday afternoon and was expected to last several hours.

The lockout has reached a critical stage, threatening to shut down a season for the second time in eight years. All games through Jan. 14, plus the Winter Classic and the All-Star game already have been called off. The next round of cuts could claim the entire schedule.

The NHL is the only North American professional sports league to cancel a season because of a labor dispute, losing the 2004-05 campaign to a lockout. A 48-game season was played in 1995 after a lockout stretched into January.

It is still possible this dispute could eventually be settled in the courts if the sides can't reach a deal on their own.

The NHL filed a class-action suit this month in U.S. District Court in New York in an effort to show its lockout is legal. In a separate move, the league filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board, contending bad-faith bargaining by the union.

Those moves were made because the players' association took steps toward potentially filing a "disclaimer of interest," which would dissolve the union and make it a trade association. That would allow players to file antitrust lawsuits against the NHL.

Union members voted overwhelmingly to give their board the power to file the disclaimer by Jan. 2. If that deadline passes, another authorization vote could be held to approve a later filing.

Negotiations between the NHL and the union have been at a standstill since talks ended Dec. 6. One week later, the sides convened again with federal mediators in New Jersey, but still couldn't make progress.

The sides have been unable to reach agreement on the length of the new deal, the length of individual player contracts, and the variance in salary from year to year. The NHL is looking for an even split of revenues with players.

The NHL pulled all previous offers off the table after the union didn't agree to terms on its last proposal without negotiation.

2012 Year in Review: We're Still Here | ARGNet: Alternate Reality ...

December 29, 2012 ? By Michael Andersen in Features, News?

argnet

Over the years, more than a few alternate reality games, transmedia storytelling projects, and advertising campaigns have warned that December 2012 would mark the end of the world. That shouldn?t come as much of a surprise: you can?t get much higher stakes than saving the world, and fighting against an ancient prophecy with its own pre-existing mythos (however misinformed) can add mystique to a narrative.

In 2009, the alternate reality game? The Institute for Human Continuity?reportedly sparked?hundreds of letters?to NASA?s Astrobiology Institute from people earnestly worried about the coming Apocalypse.?Closer to the date in question, Funcom?s The Secret World offered a series of six missions intended to forestall the End of Days both inside and outside the game. Even Old Spice got in on the harbinger of doom act, using points from six increasingly ridiculous flash games to power a laser cutter that slowly etched additional time onto the Mayan calendar for their absurdist campaign, Old Spice Saves the World.

Proclamations of impending disaster weren?t limited to global catastrophe this year, with Fourth Wall Studios? Elan Lee adding his voice to the chorus?claiming that ARGs are dead at the StoryWorld Conference in Los Angeles.?And yet, 2012 was in many ways a renaissance for alternate reality games and transmedia storytelling, as new sources of funding arise for a thriving community of developers. What follows is a closer look at some of the major events in alternate reality gaming for the year.

A Quick Look at the Industry

The most heartening development of the year is the growing influence of local groups of transmedia developers. Transmedia LA turned to Kickstarter to raise almost $10,000 to develop the alternate reality game Miracle Mile Paradox?to give its members hands-on experience creating a game from start to finish, calling back to the ?training ARG? Orbital Colony. In New York City, StoryCode?s focus was on a more condensed Story Hackathon. Inspired by Storycode?s hackathon, Transmedia SF ran its own Transmedia Jam. The hackathon model will be moving to Los Angeles in 2013, opening even more opportunities.

Established institutions in transmedia funding and support like?Power to the Pixel?and Sundance?s?New Frontier?are ramping up their efforts to provide direction and funding for the field, while new entrants like the?Tribeca Film Institute, the?National Endowment for the Humanities, and the?Canadian Film Centre?have been quick to follow with a variety of programs for prospective developments. On the legal front, Stitch Media?managed to prevail?in a Nova Scotia Supreme Court case revolving around the definition of interactivity for new media projects.

The list of transmedia storytelling platforms available for public consumption grew longer this year, as teams are increasingly viewing the technological infrastructures developed for projects as potential revenue generators. The Shadow Gang introduced Galahad, the platform developed in conjunction with Michael Grant?s alternate reality game for his Bzrk?book series, while Failbetter Games released its StoryNexus platform into the wild, after using it to produce games like?Echo Bazaar?(now known as Fallen London)?and The Night Circus. The year saw the official launch of Fourth Wall Studios? RIDES platform. The company recently laid off the majority of its staff?to shift the company?s focus away from production, redoubling efforts on developing the platform for licensing to partners.?These new platforms join existing alternatives like Social Samba and Conducttr as potential tools for content management.

Return of the Video Game

Alternate reality games like I Love Bees and Last Call Poker serving as promotional vehicles for traditional video games in the past. But few have tried to replicate Electronic Arts? ambitious attempt at fusing video game and transmedia experiences, Majestic. ?Sony returned to that concept?in 2009 with?PlayStation Xi, a console-based alternate reality game that created a game within the PlayStation Home virtual world.

This month, PlayStation returned to their familiar stomping grounds with a sequel,?Xi Continuum. Unlike its free-to-play precursor, players are asked to pay a nominal fee ($8.99) for the full Xi Continuum?experience. The return of?Xi?is one of many video game experiences that seek to directly interweave transmedia elements into the gameplay experience.?For Funcom?s The Secret World, PC-based gameplay is riddled with puzzle missions that require players to search for outside information to piece together clues scattered throughout the MMORPG?s world. These puzzle missions are punctuated by a series of alternate reality games that have?stretched back for years before the video game?s launch and continue today.

Alt-Minds looks to bring mission-based gameplay to a multi-lingual audience, offering versions of the game in French, English, German, and Spanish. The game frames the investigation around a web series. European players can turn to the game?s smartphone and tablet app to use augmented reality to hunt down additional clues at real world locations. Google is also making inroads into the augmented reality gaming market with its?Niantic Project alternate reality game. As a conspiracy-riddled narrative unfolds on the Niantic Project website, players across the globe battle to capture and maintain portals through the ARG?s augmented reality app, Ingress. Hacking portals in the augmented reality app periodically drops media files that advance the narrative, while codes and clues hidden within the narrative updates on the game?s website provide players with additional items and experience for the augmented reality game.

A Surge in Television and Movies

Syfy is looking to bridge the gap between video games and television with its ambitious upcoming project, Defiance. Syfy plans to have events in the online MMO shooter game influence the television series and vice versa, particularly as the endeavor, rumored to cost as much as $100 million, moves into its second season. Initial assets are beginning to proliferate online in anticipation of the show and game?s April premiere, offering a glimpse into the show?s post-apocalyptic universe.

Most transmedia endeavors in the realm of television and movies in 2012 were more modest in scope, seeking to offer curious viewers an amuse-bouche before the main event. For Cinemax?s show Hunted, the amuse-bouche took the form of a five-step job application to work at Byzantium Security, a company with the provocative slogan ?We?re not for everyone. Just the 1% that matters.? Sony created a similar teaser for its Skyfall campaign that challenged visitors to complete a text adventure as their application to MI6. Tim Kring tried a different tact with his fragmented web series?Daybreak 2012, which offered a thematic sequel to the show Touch that?explored the show?s mysterious ?doda? before the show?s second season. Investigation Discovery even created a condensed murder mystery?with a twist ending based on torrid love affair to promote?a reality series hosted by soap opera veteran Susan Lucci.

Even some of the larger movie-themed experiences of 2012 like the viral campaigns for?Prometheus, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises focused on periodic teasers designed to make a big splash, like eccentric trillionaire Peter Weyland?s fictional TED Talk in 2023 for Prometheus and deaddrops containing Peter Parker?s school supplies and Spidey-shoes as part of Mark of the Spider-Man.

Social Samba served as the platform for a handful of the year?s more time-intensive extended television experiences, lead by USA Networks? Suits Recruits. The platform had previously been used for online extensions like Psych?s Hashtag Killer game and MTV?s Teen Wolf: The Hunt, but pushed the platform to new heights. Hearkening back to the Sherlock Holmes game 221B?s team-based gameplay, Suits Recruits required players to assume the role of either a paralegal or legal assistant at Pearson Hardman, share information with their compatriots to crack the case, and navigate the treacherous waters of office politics.

A Return to the Web Series

While traditional television and movies eased away from full-fledged alternate reality games in 2012, the web series community moved to fill the void. Leading the charge was Fourth Wall Studios with the official unveiling of the company?s RIDES platform through a dizzying array of shows, headlined by the Emmy Award-winning Dirty Work. As opposed to aiming for interactivity with the platform, it focused on adding additional layers of multimedia touchpoints to serve as a surround-sound of immersion. Stories ranged from the intensely dark science fiction show Flare to more lighthearted fare like the home shopping channel comedy RVC.

Guidestones was another platform-driven play aimed at rethinking the consumption of web video content: the story was designed to play out through a series of short videos emailed to subscribers at regular intervals, encouraging players to tackle the puzzles contained within in a fixed period of time. With a narrative centered around the very real Georgia Guidestones and a new season coming in 2013, the series matches its novel delivery system with an engaging story.

Tom Hanks also tested the transmedia waters through Tap Joint,?a perplexingly obscure alternate reality game that promoted the animated web series Electric City through a virtual telegraph machine that features prominently in the series. One of the game?s most innovative features was using the mobile version of the website as an instruction manual for the desktop version, a functional application of the narrative possibilities showcased in Randall Munroe?s April Fool?s joke on xkcd this year. Rounding out the big budget celebrity forays into the web series space,?Anthony Zuiker paired up with Yahoo and Norton Anti-Virus to produce?Cybergeddon, providing viewers of the chance to?team up with the show?s cyber-sleuths.

Some of the most engaging experiments in transmedia storytelling of 2012 came out of the established YouTube creator community. To support MyMusic, an over-the-top comedy about a radio station run by the physical manifestations of music genres, Benny and Rafi Fine started a series of weekly shows that have effectively brought the show?s fictional radio show to life. MyMusic serves as wish fulfillment for everyone who secretly fantasized about listening to the stations featured in WKRP in Cincinnati and NewsRadio. And then, there?s the Lizzie Bennet Diaries: a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice spearheaded by Bernie Su and Hank Green that somehow manages to find endearing qualities in the the most unlikeable characters of the source material. It?s a rare Pride and Prejudice adaptation that keeps me coming back to find out what?s going on in the lives of ?Ricky? Collins and Lydia Bennet.

The Indie ARG Space

It?s getting increasingly difficult to draw the line between the indie space for alternate reality gaming and their better financed compatriots. Any one of the games I mention here (and many that I don?t) could easily claim I mislabeled them. Take, for instance, ZED.TO, a Toronto-based alternate reality game that held a series of elaborate live events that offer live theatrical experiences that rival many of the outrageous stunts pulled off during Tim Kring?s Conspiracy for Good. Similarly, the quality of the radio drama featured in the We Are the Earthborne ARG leaves me nostalgic for the halcyon days of audio dramas. I can?t even begin to make sense of TVTropes.org?s recently concluded alternate reality game, The Wall Will Fall, but its almost perverse complexity riddled with meta-references and in-jokes seems perfectly tailored to the community?s near-herculean organizational prowess. Alternet Reality delves into the horror genre through intense, live streaming challenges where the fictional characters? fates depends on players? ability to crack the case in real time.

The independent ARG that stuck with me the most this year, however, made no attempt to create the illusion of being anything but an indie project. On a lark, ARGNet founder Steve Peters announced an insta-ARG experiment parody of World Without Oil dubbed?World Without Helium. The Mega Hard Wood Group emerged from that framework, exploring the serious topic of a world facing a helium shortage in the most whimsical manner possible. The game?s protagonist William Sawtooth III decided that if corporations can be people, people should be able to function as corporations as well. So Sawtooth sold shares in his personhood, putting his life at the whims of his shareholders. The game only ran for two weeks, but every day brought a new relatively simple yet ridiculous challenge delivered through a podcast to recover William Sawtooth?s shares from the Mega Wood Group board of directors that still managed to emerge organically from the story. Other games like Work With No Pants?also embraced the absurdist aesthetic to great effect.

Persistence of the Serious Game

One of the most powerful serious games of 2011 returned to the USC campus this fall. Reality Ends Here was designed as a way of encouraging USC?s freshman film students to continue the practical experimentation and creative spark that got students admitted to the School of Cinematic Arts in the first place outside the classroom context. The project?s inaugural year won Indiecade?s Impact Award. Reality Ends Here returned to meet a new crop of incoming students this fall. The year?s projects included everything from a massive science fiction supercut remix, vignettes from an Israeli soldier?s struggles in the military, and a film created using Google Maps in place of a camera.

Education was a popular topic for serious ARGs this year, with?World Without Oil creator Ken Eklund returned to the space for?Ed Zed Omega, a game about high school dropouts with a twist. Instead of using Ed Zed Omega to encourage students to work with the current educational system, the game follows six fictional teens to address what steps high school drop-outs take when they make that decision.?ARGs were even used to promote attending Easter services for Long Hollow Baptist Church, through the campaign Who is Phillip Randoll. A light puzzle-driven narrative was used alongside out of home advertisements to build up anticipation for church?s Easter drama, The Fortunate Death of Phillip Randoll.

Books and Puzzle Challenges

For the book publishing industry, 2012 was dominated by a continuation of existing projects. 39 Clues continues to push through its second series, Yomi Ayeni?s Clockwork Watch steampunk graphic novel shipped,?and the upcoming transmedia series The Karada has been teasing its eventual release with the Wattpad story All Your Fates. Eli Horowitz, author of the recently solved puzzle book The Clock Without a Face, recently released The Silent History, a book designed exclusively for iDevices that can unlock location-specific stories for its readers. For non-fiction resources, 2012 saw the publication of Andrea Phillips??Creator?s Guide to Transmedia Storytelling?and Tyler Weaver?s?Comics for Film, Games, and Animation.?There are also a number of transmedia book experiences set to come out in 2013,?including Thomas Greanias thriller The Alignment: Federal City and Mark Staufer?s lucid dreaming exploration The Numinous Place.

Oddly enough, some of the most exciting news items relating to the publishing world are tied to already published books. At ARGFest this year, it was announced that there are four meta puzzles hidden in Dave Szulborski?s book, This Is Not A Game?that have remained hidden within the book for over seven years. Ernest Cline also revealed that his book?Ready Player One contained meta-puzzles that mirrored the novel?s plot, and offered up a 1981 Delorean as the prize for the first to complete a series of three increasingly difficult challenges. First, competitors needed to find a secret room in an emulated Atari game created for the challenge. Next, puzzlers had to collect 80?s-themed items in Richard Garrett?s Facebook game, Ultimate Collector. Finally, everyone to clear the first two challenges were asked to set a new world record on one of six classic video games. Within eight days, the contest?s winner set a new world record on Joust, and Cline gave the Delorean away on G4TV.

A handful of other major puzzles hunts concluded their multi-year runs. For?The Clock Without a Face, the last of twelve clock faces was located after players spent two years scouring the book for clues. No one solved the puzzle behind the series of puppet pirate videos We Lost Our Gold, but the creators decided Hurricane Sandy irreparably damaged the puzzle trail, dug up the treasure, and donated the money to relief efforts.?Meanwhile, Real?Escape Game, a narrative-driven series of puzzle adventures, made its way to the United States from Japan with a number locked room mysteries.

Final Thoughts for 2012

In spite of all the talk about the end of the world in 2012 and ARGs being dead, we?re still here. The games discussed above represent only a small sampling of the alternate reality gaming and transmedia storytelling spaces, and I expect that problem to get more difficult every year. Frankly, I wouldn?t have it any other way. Readily available resources and innovative tools are lowering the barriers of entry for creation, and revenue streams are increasingly integrated into experience design beyond traditional advertising revenues through Kickstarter campaigns, live event admission fees, product integration, the sale of tangible items, and subscription services.

Hints at major campaigns for 2013 are already beginning to surface. JJ Abrams? new?Star Trek film hid a sign-up page for a new viral experience in the film?s newest trailer, and Google?s?Niantic Project game is still in closed beta, with prospective players chomping at the bit to start competing for world domination.?Animism has returned for a second alternate reality game launching on January 1st with Grind City University, there?s bound to be something for everyone.

I inevitably neglected to mention more than a few key moments of the year, like?Homestuck?s Adventure Game raising almost $2.5 million on Kickstarter, an international art heist game that culminated with an event at the European Parliament, or my unrepentant glee at finally getting to hear Jack and Eugene bicker as I play Zombies, Run.?Feel free to share your own favorite moments in the comments, or check out our look back at the highlights from 2011.

Storm-damaged New York hospital partially reopens its doors

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City partially reopened its inpatient facilities on Thursday, nearly two months after it was flooded by Superstorm Sandy and sustained damages that could exceed $1 billion.

Storm damage in New Jersey, New York City's outer boroughs and New York state's Long Island captured most of the world's attention after the second-costliest hurricane in U.S. history made landfall on October 29, obscuring much of the damage sustained in Manhattan.

The emergency department at the Manhattan hospital could remain closed until the end of 2013.

At the height of the storm, the hospital was forced to evacuate its 322 patients, including 20 babies in intensive care, when it lost power and its rooftop back-up generators shut down because flooding knocked out fuel tanks in the basement.

Other major hospitals in Manhattan were also badly damaged.

Bellevue Hospital Center, one of the country's oldest hospitals and the city's main trauma treatment center, said this week that it was receiving ambulances for the first time since Sandy struck, and that full services were not expected until early February.

Recovery was still under way in other parts of Manhattan. About 10 percent of office space in downtown Manhattan, which includes the Financial District around Wall Street, was still closed as of late last week, according to a report by the real estate firm Jones Lang LaSalle.

DAMAGE ESTIMATE OVER $1 BLN

As of Thursday, NYU Langone said it could once again perform surgery on patients that would involve overnight stays, and that its intensive care and neurology units were open. More than 50 inpatients were being seen on Thursday, a spokeswoman said.

Other services, such as its labor wards and pediatric and cancer departments, would reopen on January 14.

The hospital's emergency department on the ground floor was under construction as part of an expansion program when the storm hit, and the damage was still being repaired, the hospital's statement said. In the meantime, the hospital has set up a temporary urgent care center that will receive walk-in patients and redirect more serious cases to other places in the city.

The hospital resumed some outpatient services within a week of the storm.

The total cost of repairing damaged infrastructure and replacing state-of-the-art medical equipment was likely to exceed $1 billion, a spokeswoman said. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, had already allocated $114 million, she said, and the hospital was waiting to see how much would be covered by insurance.

Images of critically ill patients being evacuated in the stormy darkness at NYU Langone and, the following day, the evacuation of some 725 patients from the nearby Bellevue, prompted concerns from some emergency experts that hospitals in New York and elsewhere are not prepared for times when the hospital itself is affected by a disaster.

Bellevue, though still closed to inpatients, has been operating outpatient clinics, walk-in emergency care and pharmacy services since November 19.

People all over the world use bank cards to help them get the things they need to achieve their goals. Credit cards can make life easier and provide a sense of freedom in the financial realm. However, it is vital that one looks into all their options and does their homework before opening any credit card accounts. The article below covers some of the basic credit information to help consumers achieve that balance.

Do not lend out charge cards under any circumstance. You may trust your friend, but it can cause problems. It is never a good idea to let friends use your card. They may make too many charges or go over whatever limit you set for them.

If you want to hang onto a credit card, make sure that you use it. Inactive accounts are usually closed by most creditors. The best way to ensure your account stays open for when you need it is to use a card occasionally. Remember to pay them off in full each month to avoid accumulating debt.

TIP! Fully pay off your monthly credit card charges when you receive the bill. Unless your credit card has 0 percent interest, every month that your card carries a balance, a finance charge is added.

All people with charge cards should get a copy of their credit report at no cost each year and look to see that everything is right. Compare the information on the report with your credit card statements and be certain they match.

Try to avoid credit card providers who charge an annual fee. Usually, no annual fees cards are offered to those with better credit scores. Fees can quickly eliminate the perks associated with any offers that accompany the card. Calculate it in your head. Annual fees are usually found finely written into the terms and conditions of the credit card, not in the promotional materials. Put your reading glasses on. Assess whether the card?s fees are a more substantial factor than the its possible benefits. Many times, they don?t.

TIP! Talk to the credit card company if you are having financial problems. Companies will sometimes set up payment plans for their customers.

Remember that you can always contact your credit card company directly and attempt to negotiate a new annual percentage rate if what you?re paying now is too high. A lot of times they will bring it down for you. This can wind up saving you a great deal of money, especially if you often carry a balance.

When closing card accounts, leave one open to help you build good credit. Try to make the one that you leave open the card with the longest history, as well as a strong payment record. Doing so helps show that you have handled one account well.

Do not charge everything on credit in an attempt to get points for rewards. If you want to accumulate airline points, you might rack up enough for a ticket if you make all your purchases on a single card. However, those tickets may end up costing you an a ghastly amount after racking up charges and interest rates.

TIP! Use your credit cards on a regular basis so that your accounts are not closed. If you do not use your card for a long period of time, the credit card company may close the account.

Always know the rate of interest on all your charge cards. This is very important: prior to singing up with a credit card company, be sure you know what rate you?re paying. If you aren?t aware of the rate, it could turn out to be much higher than you initially thought. If your interest rate is high, there is a good possibility that you won?t have enough money to pay your debt at the end of the month.

Always review the monthly statements for your credit card accounts. You need to do this regularly with each statement you receive. If you put this task off for weeks, you might not recall each and every transaction. Also, if you wait, you risk not fixing a problem if it currently exists.

Bank cards offer users financial flexibility and an ability to build a good credit history. When credit is used responsibly, it is great. However, poor credit habits have mired many consumers in ruin. This article has contained some valuable advice that can help any consumer to make educated credit card decisions that enhance their life and prevent credit pitfalls.

TIP! If you are looking for a secure card, try to stay away from a prepaid card. Prepaid cards are not credit cards at all, and they don?t report to any of the credit bureaus.

FREE IS MY LIFE: MOVIE REVIEW: This is 40

This movie review for "This is 40" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

This is 40 is being billed as the "sort-of sequel to (2007's) Knocked Up," and so Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprise their roles as Pete and Debbie. However, you won't find Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl here at all, though there are a few other recurring characters, such as Jason Segel, playing an athletic trainer aptly named Jason, and Charlyne Yi, playing an employee who works at Debbie's clothing store (and who is so weird she actually steals a few scenes). I remember I saw a screening of Knocked Up when I was attending U of M and thought it was funny, and This is 40 matches that, though it's definitely not a movie for kids because of its language and adult jokes.

Five years after?Knocked Up,?Pete and Debbie are turning 40, though Debbie insists on having "38" written on her cake. They're in some serious money troubles too, although Debbie doesn't even know the half of it; Pete's music studio isn't doing well, and he brings back one of his favorite "old fogies" and his band in a last-ditch attempt to make some money. Debbie has taken to smoking near windows in secret, and Pete eats too many cupcakes, so they decide to start a healthier lifestyle - which of course makes them miserable. Their oldest daughter, Sadie (Maude Apatow, real-life daughter of director Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann), is thirteen, too, and they're having a hard time dealing with her; their youngest daughter, Charlotte (Iris Apatow, sister of Maude), is hating that her sister and herself aren't close anymore, too. The movie follows these characters through their ups and downs, and brings a large dose of comedy with it.

During the opening scene of This is 40, you can tell this is not going to be a kids movie: we see shadows having sex in the shower, and then the door opens and Debbie scolds Pete for taking Viagra; she says that they are young and that young people shouldn't need those kinds of drugs. I had also forgotten that Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) was going to be in this film, and she plays the mother of one of Sadie's classmates, whom Debbie tries to (hilariously) intimidate at one point. Jason Segel and Megan Fox also have supporting roles, Segel in the same role as before and Megan Fox as another of Debbie's employees whom all of the married men like to ogle.

Yes, see this film. I'd like to rewatch?Knocked Up?now too, since I last saw it five years ago and would like to remember these characters who are now in this movie more. I was surprised, too, that neither Heigl nor Rogen made a cameo in this film, but they undoubtedly both have busy schedules. Despite all of the raunchy, signature Apatow situations and language in the film, at its core it's really about family, and is actually quite a sweet movie.

This is 40 is in theaters today, December 21st, and is rated R with a runtime of 134 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.

'One Christmas at a Time' is holiday music for gamers and geeks

9 hrs.

When was the last time you took a sleigh ride to grandma's house? And have you ever actually?roasted chestnuts?on an open fire? Have you? Really?

We love our traditional holiday songs this time of year, but after a while?one can't help but long for?a little Christmas music that's more ... relevant to the times.

That's where the new album from geek and gamer cult fave?Jonathan Coulton and his?collaborator John Roderick of the The?Long Winters rides to the rescue (in a rocket-powered?sleigh pulled by robots, that is).?

"One Christmas at a Time" ? which you can download for $10?here, here and here ? is chock full of quirky, funny and even heartwarming songs for the kind of modern?holidays we all know, love and sometimes loathe.

After all, who hasn't?watched that annoying/drunk relative?ruin the Christmas dinner?(or at least make everyone really uncomfortable)? And who hasn't longed for that gift that they might not get?

In "One Christmas at a Time," Coulton and Roderick?sing?songs?about awkward holiday celebrations, failed shopping efforts?and?that strange?week between Christmas and New Year's Day, offering up some tech-themed tunes along the way. For example, in?"Wikipedia Chanukah" Coulton and Roderick?take us on a tour of the online encyclopedia's explanation of the Jewish holiday (perhaps the closest you'll hear these two come to performing dubstep) And "2600" is a zippy?ode to Coulton and Roderick's childhood longing to find an?Atari 2600 game machine under the tree. (Coulton was fortunate enough to get one but Roderick, alas, was given an Intellivison instead).?

Coulton, a former computer programmer, has earned a dedicated?following among gamers,?geeks and nerds of all stripes?thanks to his intelligent?song-writing infused with a sense of humor. ?His song?"Code Monkey" ? a jaunty, simian ode?to programmers everywhere ? became a hit among the tech crowd. And his song "I'm Your Moon"?about Pluto's demotion from planet status and its unusual dance with the moon Charon is a stargazer favorite.

Meanwhile,?Coulton has written a couple of gaming world's most famous and?most covered songs. That is, he wrote?"Still Alive"?the song sung by the malevolent artificial intelligence GLaDOS at the end of "Portal." The brain-consumingly?catchy?tune?has been covered by?furries,?a?children's choir?and even?some?computers.?And Coulton?followed that hit up?with the song?"Want You Gone" for "Portal 2" (check out the excellent?fan-made video?here.)?

Of course, the question is,?why a Christmas album?

"It?s one of those things that,?when you are a musician and you?re working on stuff, putting albums out, it?s this thing that?s always on your radar as a thing you?re eventually going to do before you die," he told NBC News in a recent interview. "You?ve already done the first album, then you?ve done the difficult second album. Then there?s a bunch of other?albums in the middle. Somewhere near the end, you do the duets album ??right before you die probably. But before that, you do a Christmas record and?you do maybe a kid?s record."

Oh and he adds, "You?ve got to do an electronica album in there somewhere. That?s in my future I think."

Certainly Coulton doesn't shy away from doing the unexpected. The singer/songwriter has carved out?his own niche?(and inspired?a passionate following online and off) ever since giving up his career as a programmer.

"You spend nine years at the same company working on the same software package and you start to wonder what else is out there," he said. What was out there for Coulton was music ? and a unique project that still inspires him to this day.

"When I started doing music full time, the first thing I did was this Thing a Week Project, which was a year of releasing a new song every Friday whether I wanted to or not," he said. "And the thing that I learned from that is that I really blossom creatively when I?m challenged and afraid."

Coulton said he uses that lesson as a compass when deciding what to do next.

"If?somebody?says, 'Hey do you want to do this thing?' and it makes me a little frightened,?then while my lizard brain says, 'No no no you shouldn?t do that!' my higher brains says, 'You should think about doing that because that might be really?interesting.'"

And Coulton has no shortage of interesting projects in the works. In addition to the Christmas album and a recent tour, he is the co-host for the NPR puzzle and?word games show "Ask Me Another,"?season 2 of which begins in January.??(If you'd like to attend one of the upcoming live tapings, check out this link.)

Coulton is also gearing up for the third annual?Jo Co Cruise Crazy?event???a weeklong?Eastern Caribbean cruise in which fans are invited to sail the high seas aboard a Royal Caribbean ship while the singer?and an amazing array of artists and entertainers perform for and amuse?them. Among the confirmed stars who will be onboard this geek-filled ship starting Februrary 10 ? John Hodgman and Wil Wheaton as well as Coulton's "One Christmas at a Time" collaborator John Roderick.

"It's a ton of fun," he says of this unique seafaring adventure (which you can still sign up for). "It's about the cruise, but it's also about this community of people who are fans of things that are awesome who all get together in this one space. And the bonus is, that space is this cruise ship in the Caribbean!"

If you can't afford to join?Coulton on the high seas, you can still get your dose of his brand of music and humor by downloading?"One Christmas at a Time."?And this time of year it's also worth downloading an earlier Coulton science-fiction-themed holiday?favorite???"Chiron Beta Prime."

It's a little ditty?about a family celebrating the?holidays?from an?asteroid ruled by?robot overlords ? with nary a roasting chestnut in sight. Go on, sing along ...

This year has been a little crazy for the Andersons.

You may recall we had some trouble last year.

The robot council had us banished to an asteroid.

That hasn't undermined our holiday cheer.

And we know it's almost Christmas by the marks we make on the wall.

That's our favorite time of year.

Merry Christmas from Chiron Beta Prime,

Where we're working in a mine for our robot overlords.

Did I say overlords? I meant protectors.

Merry Christmas from Chiron Beta Prime.

Riding the Gaming Wave: Rolocule founder Rohit Gupta on chasing ...

Most of us crave for a job that can be fun and high-paying at the same time, however, only a few get lucky. Rohit Gupta, founder of Rolocule Games is one of the lucky folks.

Rolocule Games, an award winning game development company, focuses on creating high-end console-like interactive entertainment software for next-gen platforms such as tablets and smartphones.?"At Rolocule we like solving very complex problems," says Gupta, for whom building computer games is a passion.

Chasing a dream

Gupta started his career as a software engineer at Infosys Technologies. However, he soon realized that his passion lay in computer games. To understand game development, Gupta pursued a Masters from Columbia University, US, specializing in Computer Graphics. Thereafter Gupta joined Electronic Arts (EA), one of the world's leading gaming companies at its headquarters in California and was a part of the team that developed EA's best-selling computer game, ?THE SIMS 3'. However, this ?dream job' too did not satisfy his creative urges and after a few years Gupta returned to India to start his own game development company. "I needed more control and wanted to be a part of the decision making process," he recalls.

With the iPhone and Apple App Store creating waves in the gaming ecosystem, Gupta decided to take a bet on developing apps for the iPhone rather than games for consoles. He borrowed Rs. 1 lakh from his father, bought a computer and an iPhone, and got started. Gupta developed the first game, Tough Squash, a squash game app in 2009, which created a reasonable buzz and some revenues as well.

Turning the corner

The turning point for Rolocule Games came in 2010, when it released Super Badminton, the world's first badminton video game for the iPhone and later for the iPad. Apple recommended the game to its customers and highlighted it in their ?newsworthy' category. The company broke even within a week. With revenues coming in, the team size increased. Anuj Tandon, Gupta's college buddy and Infosys colleague, who had been working with Gupta behind the scenes thus far, came on board as the Chief Operating Officer.

In 2011, Rolocule developed a tennis game, Flick Tennis, which has had more than 0.6 million downloads. Rated as the "best tennis game on any mobile platform" by critics, Flick Tennis won the ?People's Choice Award' at the 8th IMGA awards ceremony held in the Mobile World Congress 2012 at Barcelona in Spain. In-depth research and analysis is what differentiates Rolocule's approach to developing games. "We have done in-depth research on understanding what makes playing tennis on tablets and smartphones different," says Tandon.

Rolocule, which started with a single programmer in 2010, has now grown to a 12-member team. Scaling up, says Gupta, was a huge challenge for this young company. Not only did they have to build up the team that shared the founder's vision, Gupta had to learn how to delegate the activities that he had been responsible for, to his junior team members.

Going forward, Rolocule will stay focused on developing games that stand out, without compromising on quality. The company already has three games in production. While the computer games market is very crowded, Rolocule's young promoters remain unfazed, confident that their unique world class games will help them successfully ride the gaming wave.

KKR raises $6 billion Asia fund, region's largest ever: sources

HONG KONG/NEW YORK (Reuters) - KKR & Co L.P. has finished raising $6 billion for its second pan-Asia fund, according to sources, the largest private equity pool ever assembled for the region, with strong demand from pension funds and endowments seeking emerging market returns.

KKR's latest Asia fund, which follows a $4 billion regional fund it raised in 2007, is over-subscribed, the sources told Reuters, meaning demand exceeded the current total despite challenges facing investors putting money into the region's slowing economy.

The Asia fund raising leg of the New York company, founded by cousins and leveraged buyout pioneers Henry Kravis and George Roberts, contrasts with KKR's struggles in the United States, where efforts to raise money for its next North American fund has stalled.

KKR is competing with several other major firms in Asia for investor money, including TPG Capital and Affinity Capital Partners. Several factors appear to be behind KKR's success in raising the record $6 billion.

The core group of managers it brought out to run the Asia operation in 2007 has stayed in place, with Joe Bae remaining at the helm. It has also impressed investors with a solid track record and, unlike some competitors, no major blow-ups according to sources who did not want to be named.

The California public employee pension fund, known as CALpers, invested $275 million into KKR's first Asia fund, according to the CALpers website - one of the few industry investors that publishes the returns.

CALPers' net internal rate of return is 11.4 percent from the fund, the website says. That makes KKR a leader in returns among the other global firms that raised large Asia funds around 2007, CALpers data showed.

KKR even cited its second Asia fund as a reason why it has struggled to meet its fund raising goal for its next North American fund.

"A lot of our investors started to focus on the Asia II fund and we had significant amount of overlap in terms of our investor base between those two geographic areas," KKR's head of global capital and asset management, Scott Nuttall, told analysts on a conference call in October.

The formal close of the fund is expected to be announced early next year, said the sources, who could not be named as the matter was confidential. KKR declined to comment.

KKR's Asia portfolio includes South Korean beer and soju maker Oriental Brewery and Vietnam's Masan Consumer Corp.

APPETITE THERE

Asia-based private equity firms now account for 14.5 percent of funds raised globally this year, or $50.2 billion, up from 8 percent in 2009, according to Thomson Reuters data.

However, that capital is going to a narrower band of funds, as pension funds and endowments are pressing private equity firms to boost returns in Asia, as a crop of funds they seeded from 2006 to 2008 showed disappointing results.

After a steady climb from 2003 onwards, Asia private equity investors have faced a volatile market since late 2008, when returns took a huge hit following the global financial crisis and have remained choppy ever since, despite the region's promise of high economic growth.

That has led some private equity firms to encounter, for the first time, difficulties in raising money in Asia.

KKR was founded in 1976 by Kravis, Roberts and former Bear Stearns colleague Jerome Kohlberg, who left shortly after the firm's launch. Kravis and Roberts are still heavily involved in the day-to-day activities of the firm.

The New York-based company, immortalized in the best seller "Barbarians at the Gates", has been involved in some of the largest leveraged buyouts in the history of the industry, including the $31.8 billion purchase of the former Texas utility TXU. That deal, which it did with TPG, turned out to be a major disappointment.

KKR was a latecomer to Asia, opting to expand with a Hong Kong office that opened in 2007, putting it behind the likes of Carlyle Group and Warburg Pincus, which were long entrenched in the region.

In one of its first notable Asia investments, KKR acquired Singapore disk drive component maker Unisteel Technology International through a leveraged buyout in 2008 for $575 million, beating out bids from Bain Capital and Carlyle Group , and delisted the first from the Singapore exchange.

KKR agreed in August this year to sell Unisteel to Switzerland's SFS Group for close to two times the money it invested as equity in 2008.

KKR's other Asian investments include its $1.8 billion acquisition of Oriental Brewery in South Korea in 2009 to a $159 million purchase of 10 percent of Vietnam's Masan Consumer Corp in 2011, is among the best known private equity firms globally.

The firm this year opened its first office in Singapore and put its first deals team on the ground in Southeast Asia, signaling an increasing focus for private equity on that region's growth markets. KKR has invested more than $1 billion in Southeast Asia so far.

It also has a separate, $1 billion China fund.

KKR is currently among second-round bidders for the fiber-optics business being sold by Australian contractor Leighton Holdings Ltd , a business that analysts say could fetch as much as A$870 million ($917 million).

NRA goes silent after Connecticut school shooting

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The National Rifle Association, the nation's largest gun-rights group, has gone eerily silent after the deadly shooting of 26 people, including 20 children, at a Connecticut elementary school.

Its Facebook page has disappeared. It has not sent a message on Twitter since the extent of the carnage became clear. And no leaders of the 4.3 million-member organization appeared on the talk shows this past Sunday, two days after the shooting.

During past crises, the politically powerful group has defended gun owners' constitutional right to bear arms, which is popular among millions of Americans.

But with 20 of the victims ages 6 or 7, it may be tougher to advocate for gun owners' rights.

One Republican strategist says the NRA's approach is probably wise given the emotions involved.

S.Africa's Mandela had gallstones removed, recovering: government

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Nelson Mandela, the 94-year-old former South African president and Nobel Peace laureate hospitalised with a lung infection, has successfully undergone a procedure to have gallstones removed, the government said on Saturday.

"The former president underwent a procedure via endoscopy to have gallstones removed. The procedure was successful and Madiba is recovering," President Jacob Zuma's office said in a statement, using Mandela's clan name.

South Africa's first black president, who came to power in historic all-race elections in 1994 after decades struggling against apartheid, remains a symbol of resistance to racism and injustice at home and around the world.

Mandela was admitted to a Pretoria hospital on Saturday a week ago after being flown from his home village of Qunu in a remote, rural part of the Eastern Cape province.

Tests revealed a recurrence of a lung infection and that he had developed gallstones, the government statement said.

The medical team had decided to treat the lung infection before attending to the gallstones, it said.

Mandela spent 27 years in apartheid prisons, including 18 years on the windswept Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town.

He was released in 1990 and went on to use his unparalleled prestige to push for reconciliation between whites and blacks as the bedrock of the post-apartheid "Rainbow Nation".

He stepped down in 1999 after one term in office and has been largely removed from public life for the last decade.

Mandela spent time in a Johannesburg hospital in 2011 with a respiratory condition, and again in February this year because of abdominal pains. He was released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing serious.

He has since spent most of his time in Qunu.

His fragile health prevents him from making any public appearances in South Africa, although he has continued to receive high-profile domestic and international visitors, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton in July.
