A spokeswoman for New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner went on an expletive-laden rant at a former campaign intern who had written an unflattering portrayal of the campaign in the New York Daily News.
Here is what Weiner spokeswoman Barbara Morgan called the former intern, Olivia Nuzzi, in comments to Talking Points Memo's Hunter Walker: "bitch," "slutbag," "twat," and "cunt." She also threatened to sue her.
What prompted this? Nuzzi wrote a piece in the Daily News?published Tuesday morning that served as a tell-all.
She wrote that many interns joined the Weiner campaign to get closer to his wife, Huma Abedin, with hopes of landing a role on any potential campaign for Hillary Clinton in 2016. She said that one campaign staffer had left because he had only been paid one-third of what he was promised. And she said that Weiner had incorrectly referred to multiple interns as "Monica."
We emailed Morgan to see if she intended her comments to be seen.
Her response: "NO NO NO NO NO."
Here is Morgan's full statement:
"In a moment of frustration, I used inappropriate language in what I thought was an off the record conversation. It was wrong and I am very sorry, which is what I said tonight when I called and emailed Olivia to apologize."
Josh Marshall, the editor and publisher of TPM, said, however, that the conversation "definitely" came on the record. He said it came during an interview for an unrelated story about Weiner's fundraising numbers.
"During that discussion, Morgan launched into a very animated series of comments about Nuzzi, which we quote in the piece," Marshall said in an email.
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sprint Corp, the No. 3 U.S. mobile service provider, posted a wider quarterly loss due to hefty costs from shutting down its older Nextel network and it warned that customer defections would continue to hurt it in coming quarters.
Shares in Sprint, which recently sold 78 percent of its shares to Japan's SoftBank Corp , rose 1 percent on Tuesday morning as its revenue was better than expected.
But analysts worried whether Sprint can turn around subscriber losses in a bitterly competitive market where it needs to catch up to stronger rivals Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc and smaller rival T-Mobile US is offering service price discounts.
Moffett Research analyst Craig Moffett is concerned that it might have to cut service prices in order to return to reporting quarterly net customer additions again.
"The risk of a price war is much higher than it has been in the past," said Moffett, who is worried that service discounts at will lure away Sprint customers. "People are struggling with concerns about what its going to cost to turn this ship around in particular in terms of competition."
Sprint has struggled with Nextel customer losses since it bought that company in 2005 and it finally shut down the network in the second quarter. While it expects savings from the shutdown, it will still be hurt by related customer defections, known in the industry as churn, this quarter.
And Sprint, which will use SoftBank investments and spectrum from Clearwire to beef up its network, also expects customers to keep leaving while it works on a network upgrade for the rest of this year as its high-speed data service trails rivals'.
"Between now and then, those will be the headwinds," Sprint Chief Executive Dan Hesse told Reuters.
Some businesses who used the Nextel service have also decided to pull their employees from the Sprint network because of the Nextel network shutdown according to Hesse who expects the biggest exodus of those customers this quarter.
Nomura analyst Michael McCormack said the report was in line with his expectations but he worried about future quarters.
"They will have a hard time balancing return to subscriber growth against profitability," McCormack said.
Sprint lost 1.045 million contract customers in the quarter, more than the average estimate for a loss of almost 972,000 by four analysts contacted by Reuters. Their estimates ranged from a loss of 885,000 to 1.1 million customers.
The company said its Sprint-branded service added 194,000 customers in the quarter, but it would have posted a net decline of 170,000 without 364,000 users who moved from the Nextel network to the Sprint service.
In comparison, the top U.S. mobile service Verizon Wireless had 941,000 subscriber additions and the No. 2 provider AT&T added over 550,000 net new subscribers in the second quarter.
Sprint's second-quarter loss widened to $1.6 billion, or 53 cents per share, from loss of $1.4 billion, or 46 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. Excluding unusual items Sprint's loss would have been 31 cents per share, or a penny worse than Wall Street expectations, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Revenue rose to $8.88 billion from $8.84 billion and was ahead of Wall Street estimates closer to $8.7 billion.
Sprint said this was driven by average revenue per user (ARPU) on the Sprint network, which increased to $64.20 in the quarter from $63.38 in the year-ago quarter as its customers spent more on wireless data services such as mobile web surfing.
"The highlight of the quarter for us was revenue and ARPU," said Hesse, who expects more ARPU growth in the coming quarters.
While Sprint has struggled to compete for years, SoftBank Chief Executive and founder Masayoshi Son is betting that he can help it to become a much stronger competitor.
SoftBank paid $21.6 billion to take control of Sprint on July 10 after months of battling with rival bidder Dish Network Corp . SoftBank helped Sprint - previously the majority owner of Clearwire Corp - to take full control of Clearwire so it can use Clearwire's spectrum to boost Sprint's network.
After SoftBank's earnings report, also on Tuesday Son acknowledged that "Sprint's fight is no easy task" because of stiff competition from Verizon and AT&T.
Sprint said it expects 2013 adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization (OIBDA) between 5.1 billion and $5.3 billion, including non-cash one-time costs related to its SoftBank deal and its July buyout of Clearwire.
But excluding these costs, Sprint said its 2013 target was for adjusted OIBDA between $5.5 billion and $5.7 billion, which is ahead of its previous goal to reach the high end of a $5.2 billion to $5.5 billion target range.
Sprint set its 2013 capital spending budget at $8 billion. Its shares were up 10 cents or 1.8 percent at $5.85 on the New York Stock Exchange after the news.

ARLINGTON, Va.The Department of the Navy (DoN) and City of Chicago this month kicked off a unique collaboration to give high school and community college students an intense, hands-on experience in naval-relevant science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
Critical MASS (Midwest Association for Science and Service) is a five-year, $2 million investment that will bring enrichment programs to seven Chicago high schools, including five early college institutions driven by STEM curricula. It will serve as a national model for integrating new technologies into STEM education.
The program will feature competitions, field trips and mentoring opportunities. Officials will rely on several naval STEM programs and projectsincluding the Technovation Challenge, SeaPerch, Gooru and Sally Ride Scienceto enhance the curriculum, which will cover everything from aero and hydrodynamics to solid-state electrical components and nuclear reactions.
"Our Navy needs engineers, naval architects and weapons developers," said Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Matthew L. Klunder. "More than half of our science and engineering professionals will be eligible for retirement by 2020, so we have to develop these important skills in the generation going through high school right now."
Klunder leads the Office of Naval Research (ONR), which is the DoN's executive agent for STEM-related initiatives. The collaboration with Chicago Public Schools will provide STEM enrichment programs that span ninth grade to community college, both during the academic school year and the summer.
"President Obama called on the nation to provide our children with the education and skills they need to excel in school and the careers of tomorrow," said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "By partnering with the Department of the Navy, we are taking a huge step towards this goal, building upon our students' science, technology and math skills and supporting them with real-world experiences that open the doors to future career options."
Critical MASS began the week of July 15 with its initial summer camp and a Curriculum Day, which brought together Navy experts, curriculum designers, representatives from the mayor of Chicago's office, school administrators, teachers and City Colleges of Chicago faculty members for a discussion of programming opportunities in both after-school and in-class environments.
"When you have this many high-powered leaders in one room, you run the risk of each one pushing a different agenda," said Cmdr. Joseph Cohn, ONR's deputy director of research for STEM. "But our agenda was a common oneimproving the quality of STEM education today, to secure the future for the Navy, Marine Corps and our nation."
The goals of the five-year program call for increasing:
interest in, and relevance of, STEM learning in Chicago-area high schools
STEM competency in Chicago high schools
numbers of academically prepared students entering community colleges and four-year institutions in STEM fields
competitiveness and diversity of students applying for admission to military service academies or ROTC programs
awareness and interest in STEM career options with the DoN
women and minority participation in STEM.
"The hope is that the model set forth in Chicago will be replicated by cities across the nation," Cohn said.

The Samsung NX2000 ($649.99 direct) is a mid-level body in Samsung's NX mirrorless camera lineup. It's aimed squarely at fans of touch-screen devices, as it eschews most physical controls in favor of a big 3.7-inch rear LCD. Its image quality is excellent, thanks to a big 20-megapixel APS-C image sensor that captures impressive photos through ISO 1600, but performance is slow and I found the touch-based interface to be cumbersome to use, especially when shooting in very bright light. But I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to camera controls; touch-screen aficionados will feel right at home. There's another Samsung mirrorless camera that we liked more; the NX300 is our current Editors' Choice for mirrorless cameras. It's a bit more expensive, but also more capable, as it sports both a tilting touch-screen and traditional controls.
Design and Features The NX2000 is pretty small, especially when you consider the big image sensor that it contains. It measures 2.5 by 4.7 by 1.4 inches (HWD) and weighs just half a pound without a lens. It's not that far off in size or shape from the Sony Alpha NEX-3N (2.3 by 4.4 by 1.4 inches, 9.5 ounces). The 3N also uses an APS-C image sensor, but manages to squeeze a tilting rear display and an in-body flash into its body?the NX2000 offers neither, but does include a small external flash.
Unlike other interchangeable lens cameras, you won't find a lot of controls on the NX2000's body. There's a control wheel on the top plate, along with the Direct Link Wi-Fi button, the power switch, and shutter release. You'll find a movie record button, Home button, and image playback button to the right of the rear LCD, and an iFn control button on most lenses.
The control wheel takes a bit of getting used to. Simply turning it brings up an on-screen menu that allows you to adjust the shooting mode. You can do so by touch, or by turning the wheel to select a setting and pushing it in to confirm. Pushing the wheel in while shooting changes its behavior; if you're in aperture priority or program mode, the first press gives you direct control over the f-stop, and the second changes that to exposure compensation. The behavior is the same in shutter priority mode, substituting the shutter speed for the f-stop. In manual mode you can only adjust the aperture orthe shutter speed; the exposure compensation bar moves on its own to let you know if your shot is over or underexposed. You can shoot in manual mode with the ISO set to auto, giving you the option of controlling the depth of field and shutter speed without having to constantly fiddle with the ISO in order to get a proper exposure.
The iFn button, located on most NX lenses, comes into play with this body more than with other NX cameras. It makes up for some of the shortcomings. Pressing it gives you access to control a number of shooting settings, including the aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and digital zoom. Each press brings up a different setting. You can use the control wheel or the manual focus ring to adjust the setting, and press the control wheel in or half-press the shutter to set it and dismiss the menu.
The rear display is huge at 3.7 inches; it occupies almost the entirety of the NX2000's backside. It's quite sharp thanks to a 1,152k-dot resolution, and quite responsive to the touch. But I struggled to frame images when shooting outdoors on a bright summer afternoon. I also had the tiny Pentax Q7 with me, and its rear display was much easier to see in bright light. It wouldn't be as much of an issue if the screen titled, like the one on the NX300, so that you could better adjust to avoid glare, or if there was an EVF available. Shooters who are interested in a mirrorless camera and don't want to give up an eye-level finder should consider the Olympus PEN E-PL5; its rear screen tilts, and it has an accessory port so that you can add the inexpensive VF-3 ($180) or top-end VF-4 electronic viewfinder.
Touch controls are always active. There's a big box that represents the focus area, and you can move it and refocus the camera with a tap on the display; the camera can also be set to take the shot with a touch, rather than just refocusing. There's also a tracking option, where the camera will attempt to follow the object which you touched as it moves through the frame. All of these settings are accessed via the Touch AF setting on the left side of the display. Below that is a touch control that changes how much information is shown; you can set the camera to display the minimum, or to add current shooting settings, a live histogram, and a virtual horizon indicator. If you like the NX2000, but are turned off by the touch interface, consider the NX1100. It's the same camera as the NX1000 that we reviewed last year, with the added addition of a copy of Adobe Lightroom.
The other major touch areas on the display are the Menu (bottom left) and Fn (bottom right) controls. Menu does what you would expect it to; it gives you access to a detailed list of camera settings, including control over manual focus peaking, sound controls, and video quality options. The Fn menu brings up the Smart Panel, which allows you to see and adjust shooting settings from one place. From here you can adjust the shutter speed, f-stop, exposure value compensation setting, ISO, white balance, JPG color settings (including some art filters that will make Instagrammers happy), metering pattern, autofocus mode, drive mode, and flash settings.
Wi-Fi is built into the camera, and like recent Samsung models, it's one of the best implementations you'll find. There are numerous ways to share images, including integration with Facebook, email, Picasa, YouTube, and SkyDrive, all directly from the camera. You can also set up files to back up automatically to your PC, and use the free Samsung Smart Camera app to send photos directly to your iOS or Android device. If you have other Samsung Wi-Fi devices in your home, you can use Samsung Link to share photos with them via the DLNA protocol. There's also a Remote Viewfinder function; it works with an app on your phone or tablet and allows you to control the camera via your phone's screen. NFC pairing is supported if your phone or tablet supports that technology. The NX2000 also supports the company's unique 45mm f/1.8 2D/3D lens; the NX300 is the only other body available with support for this lens.
