Rebecca Edmonds, Single Mom, Dismissed From Air Force For ...

Rebecca Edmonds, the daughter of an Air Force captain, proudly followed in her father?s footsteps when she joined the armed forces. But her dream came to an abrupt halt when the Air Force found out that she was about to start a family of her own.

Edmonds, a graduate of Marquette University with a full scholarship from the Air Force, became pregnant 13 weeks before she was going to be commissioned as an officer, CNN reported. Six months into her pregnancy, she shared her news with the Air Force. In response, they revoked her $92,000 scholarship and ejected her from the ranks.

The Air Force strictly forbids single parents from enlisting -- a policy Edmonds alleges that she was unaware of when she found out she was pregnant. The Air Force put the single parent policy in place due to the difficult strains deployment puts on the children of single parents, according to CNN.

The U.S. military is committed to ensuring that enlisted members take care of family obligations, such as child care, before deploying for service. According to the 2012 research paper published by Indiana University ? Purdue University Indianapolis, a single parent must submit in writing that an individual not enlisted in the military will take responsibility over the child and individuals who do not comply could be immediately terminated from service.

The Air Force contends that if Edmonds was honest about her pregnancy from the beginning, she would not of been discharged so abruptly, according to CNN. In a letter written to Edmonds? attorney about the case, an Air Force official wrote, "If Ms. Edmonds had reported her pregnancy she would have been placed on medical recheck status until she gave birth.? The letter goes on to explain that Edmonds would only be able to be deployed ?if she were not a single parent, for example, if she were married, or had given the child up for adoption."

A policy that strictly forbids individuals from giving up custody of their child for the purpose of joining the ranks is outlined on the Air Force?s website. If a single parent attempting to join the Air Force indicates that their child is in the custody of someone else, they are required to acknowledge that ?his/her intent at the time of enlist was not to enter the Air Force with the express intention of regaining custody after enlistment.?

Edmonds isn?t the only single parent with dreams of joining the armed forces. In 2009, it was estimated that more than 30,000 single mothers had deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Researchers like Lieutenant Colonel Samantha Blanchard, the director of behavior medicine at Nellis Family Medicine Residency in Nevada, have have highlighted the need for more services for single parents in the military.

Although mothers serving their country face a unique set of battles when it comes to balancing their job and their family, many women in other professions have also alleged they were unjustly fired due to pregnancy. Jamera Lee Massop of Jamaica, N.Y. contends that she was abruptly fired from her job as an administrative assistant when she was six months pregnant. Jarretta Hamilton, previously a fourth-grade teacher in the Atlanta area, filed a lawsuit against her school district for being fired after telling her principle she was pregnant.

Edmonds case is currently under review. She told CNN that she hopes that her case will make the military reconsider its current policy on single parents enlisting for service.

I'm Going with Obama. | Sunrise Rants

My three year-old said this before I walked out the door this morning. ?I think he meant a sentiment more closely related to ?I?m leaving with Mom now,? but you never know with this kid. ?But, it inspired me, while?everyone?is out endorsing their candidates, I?d like to stop and endorse mine.

I?m going with Obama.

In many ways, albeit with a dose of romance thrown in, my family embodies the typical struggling family in this Post-Bush recession. ?We chose to throw ourselves into it, chasing a dream of living in New York City, which caused us to leave our jobs behind and yet fail to find the same level of gainful employment. ?Thus, we rented out our home, lived with family, leaned heavily on them financially, made cuts, cleared out our retirement, cleared out anything we had, and charged up our credit cards. ?We put off medical treatment and for a time went without coverage because it wasn?t in the budget. We made cross-country moves to find a place to live in which we had no ties to other than that, in this city, Houston, we could be employed and afford to pay our bills. ?We changed from dad being the primary breadwinner to mom, and dad, like many fathers, by default and without expecting it, because a stay-at-home who is now starting up his own business out of his home while he is taking care of two adorable children, who also happen to be the most demanding bosses we have ever known (and also pay the poorest).

We are a friggin? NPR cliche, a dream story to capture the recession in one tidy?sound?bite. Any trend in dealing with the recession you?ve heard about ? we?ve probably been employing that tactic as well.

And that said, I?m still with Obama.

I don?t believe he got us into this mess, but I believe he?pulled off the?triage, stopped the bleeding, and is working to carefully and thoughtfully pull all of us out.

I do believe we will get there. And I believe that the change he promised us was substantive and real, not a quick-fix or a band-aid but real healing for a young society that has still a lot to learn. We?re not that old of a country, y?all.

I believe that the Democratic party cares more about empowering everyone than the Republican party. ?I believe that the Republican party is facing a crisis because of racism,?misogyny? and ultimately fear. ?My understanding of the republican party is that people want to be able to make decisions about their lives and money based on their own values and?worldview. ?Fine. But, I believe they fear allowing others to do the same thing. ?My suspicion is that treating everyone equally and?empowering?others to make decisions contrary to their own beliefs scares the shit out of them. ?It then?becomes?important to control others decisions so that they can?t make?decisions?themselves contrary to their worldview? ?And that?s where the Republican party fails for me ? they want independence for themselves and freedom but not for anyone else. ?Better to take care of self than trust others to take care of you or to even take care of themselves. ?It?s a real gap in logic. ?I want freedom but my freedom means you don?t have freedom to decide this long list of personal, intimate and basic things?

In another direction, I believe the reason?they?don?t trust others to take care of them in return (i.e. trust government) is because they don?t take care of others in the first place, so why would they believe?someone?else would take care of them? So they hate, and you see it in crazy little spurts of racism and women-hating and immigrant bashing all the time. Of course not all Republicans are like this ?and I apologize to those awesome well-meaning people who call themselves Republican and do not hate but?and it?s a big but? it?s the ?but? I have to worry about because it ends up overpowering the rest.

I believe in the party that says it is committed to everyone and has that track record. ?I would like to believe in the basics of republicanism ? that if everyone can decide where to invest their own money, that it will all go to the right place, but I don?t trust the individual in that way. ?Why would Joe Anybody understand the complexity of what his enormous nation of community members needs? Or even fully his own local community? ?I work really hard and don?t have time to think comprehensively about where my money needs to go to support my community members. That?s why we employ the government through our taxes to specialize in thinking about us as a whole and focus on making the whole work.

Government is great. I can go home and rest knowing that my community is being cared for without my active participation on a daily basis. ?It would be overwhelming to me, a concerned and thoughtful citizen, to not pay taxes and instead take responsibility to decide how and where to invest my money. ?Do I pay the city for the roads? The school for the teachers? If I don?t have money, maybe I stop driving and home school. ?Maybe I return to a barter system so I can avoid working entirely. In that situation, chaos would soon reign and every thing would be pay for play and I would stop playing. ?I would also probably be forced to choose to invest in my own family over paying money to others. ?When push comes to shove, a mother will always shove. ?So in short, the ?government keeps me from being an asshole. Conversely, it?s also my job to keep the government from being an asshole too.

I believe the individual will take care of the individual and that the whole is responsible for taking care of the whole. ?We need a government that is looking out for the whole, not the individual?s right to not worry about the?rest? ?The individual does that just fine on his own. ?We need a strong government creating the best conditions for each individual to be empowered to make the decisions for themselves that are?appropriate?for them to make for themselves. ?We don?t need a government telling women they can?t do this, and people who love each other that they can?t do that, and immigrants that, although we use and abuse you, you can?t stay here without fear. ?To me the Republican party is about restriction of rights of others based on morals and religion and hate and fear (except wealth and guns) and the Democratic party is about allowance and evening the playing field. ?Just look at the news and tally the stories of hate and restriction and which party is behind each act. ?It quickly becomes clear and that?s my defense of this tirade, apologies to those whom it offends. Because this country is about life, liberty and happiness for everyone ? I?m with the Democrats.

I?m with Obama.

~

And for the record, the only voter fraud I?ve heard of is disenfranchisement. ?It is now well established that there is no actual problem of people trying to vote when they do not have the right to vote. ?The problem is that people who do have the right to vote are trying to vote ? at least that?s the problem for the conservatives, inspiring all these silly, hateful voter ID laws.

Rant concluded. Have a great day and please don?t fail to vote.

3-D printer to turn waste plastic into toilets

52 min.

3-D printing technology is being harnessed to take pesky plastic waste to make human waste disappear via composting toilets.

The concept won the $100,000 top prize earlier this month?in the 3D4D Challenge, a contest where teams presented ideas to leverage the fast evolving field of 3-D printing technology to deliver real social benefits in the developing world.

The winning team from University of Washington will invest the prize money to form a non-profit organization?and collaborate with Oaxaca, Mexico-based Water for Humans to create composting latrines and rainwater harvesting systems.

3-D printers are poised to revolutionize manufacturing. Akin to?a traditional inkjet printer, they squirt out liquid material following instructions from a computer. But instead of stopping at one layer of ink, these machines print in three dimensions by putting one layer on top of another.

To do this, traditional ink is replaced with materials that harden with each pass of the nozzle. This can be plastics in the case of?trinkets such as a Yoda statue or a model airplane that can fly.?

Team leader Matthew Rogge and his colleagues aim to use waste plastics such as milk jugs and soda bottles as the source material for their printer, and use it to build latrines that use less energy to manufacture than concrete toilets.

The team will also use the printer to make parts for rainwater collection systems that will be more robust than the typical cobbled-together-from-spare-plumbing-parts versions found in the developing world.

As a proof-of-concept, earlier this year the team printed a life-size boat from more than 250 plastic milk jugs using their custom built Big Red printer. The entered the boat in a milk jug derby and took second place.

The concept for the toilet grew out of Rogge?s work in the Peace Corps building water and irrigation systems in Ghana, Panama and Bolivia. Building custom parts in these low-resources countries, he said, was frustrating.

When he learned about 3-D printing technology, he decided to go back to school to learn how to use it. Winning the $100,000 prize, he said, is like a dream come true.

?I feel lucky to have the chance to start making our ideas into reality,? he said in a news release. ?There is a great potential here to improve people?s quality of life while taking plastic out of the waste stream.?

Off-the-record interview goes public, Obama lays out 2nd-term goals

Obama waves from Marine One before he departs the White House for a campaign trip. (Larry Downing/Reuters)President Barack Obama vowed in an interview published Wednesday that, if re-elected, he will forge a "grand bargain" with Republicans to reduce America's debt and achieve comprehensive immigration?both in the first year of a second term.

Obama's comments came in a telephone conversation with the editor and the publisher of the Des Moines Register. The newspaper published the exchange on its website. The conversation had initially been off-the-record, but the White House gave the daily permission to publish it after editor Rick Green penned an unusual public complaint.

"It will probably be messy. It won't be pleasant. But I am absolutely confident that we can get what is the equivalent of the grand bargain that essentially I've been offering to the Republicans for a very long time, which is $2.50 worth of cuts for every dollar in spending, and work to reduce the costs of our health care programs," Obama said.

"?And we can easily meet?'easily' is the wrong word?we can credibly meet the target that the Bowles-Simpson Commission established of $4 trillion in deficit reduction, and even more in the out-years, and we can stabilize our deficit-to-GDP ratio in a way that is really going to be a good foundation for long-term growth. Now, once we get that done, that takes a huge piece of business off the table," he went on to say.

"??The second thing I'm confident we'll get done next year is immigration reform," Obama said. "And since this is off the record, I will just be very blunt. Should I win a second term, a big reason I will win a second term is because the Republican nominee and the Republican Party have so alienated the fastest-growing demographic group in the country, the Latino community. And this is a relatively new phenomenon. George Bush and Karl Rove were smart enough to understand the changing nature of America. And so I am fairly confident that they're going to have a deep interest in getting that done. And I want to get it done because it's the right thing to do and I've cared about this ever since I ran back in 2008."

Microsoft makes the right moves to tighten privacy policy

With so many concerns about the use of customer data, be it through what is collected by a carrier and sold, or aggregated through use of services the way Google does across its uniform policy, it is quite refreshing to see Microsoft respond to these concerns with some fairly notable action.

Congressman Edward Markey (D-Mass), co-chair of the Congressional Bipartisan Privacy Caucus sent a letter to Microsoft CEO Steven Ballmer expressing concerns about Microsoft?s recently implemented privacy policy. By recent, we mean going into effect this past Friday. Rep. Markey cited concerns in the Microsoft Services Agreement verbiage that gave the appearance that Microsoft would leverage user data gathered within services such as email, instant messaging and search to deliver targeted advertising despite previous statements by Microsoft that the company would not adopt such a practice.

These concerns were raised by the Congressman after an article was published in the New York Times on October 19th which cited the new policy going into effect with Microsoft, and contrasted the harsh reaction many had to Google?s similar privacy policy.

Obviously looking to avoid any backlash with two major media events planned in the coming days, Microsoft released a statement to ensure that its intentions were clear. It also responded to Rep. Markey?s admonition to consider an opt-in standard regarding the collection of data.

To that end, Microsoft also took the step to make the ?do not track? option in Internet Explorer the default setting in the browser, even though it was not part of the Services Agreement. Score one for Microsoft.

Gender discrimination a reason why females choose careers outside the hard sciences

Gender discrimination a reason why females choose careers outside the hard sciences

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Both male and female scientists view gender discrimination as a major reason women choose to pursue careers in biology rather than physics, according to new research from Rice University.

"Gender Segregation in Elite Academic Science," which appears in the October issue of Gender and Society, reveals differences in the way male and female scientists view disparities in the proportion of women in some science disciplines. The study surveyed 2,500 biologists and physicists at 30 elite institutions of higher education in the United States. Researchers also interviewed a smaller scientific sample of 150 scientists one on one about the reasons they believe there are gender differences in scientific disciplines.

"The distribution of women and men across various science-related occupations has long drawn both popular and scholarly attention," said lead study author and principal investigator Elaine Howard Ecklund, an associate professor of sociology. "In our research, we're interested in how scientists explain the different proportions of men and women in biology and physics.

"We know from various pieces of research that people's perceptions of the way things are really influence how they act with other people," she said. "When mentoring students, they might pass these views along. This makes their opinions extremely important, as they can have a significant impact on future scientists and research."

The study's key finding is that both male and female scientists view gender discrimination as a factor in women's decision not to choose a science career at all or to choose biology over physics. However, the two sexes still have differences in opinion about when discrimination occurs.

"During interviews, men almost never mentioned present-day discrimination, believing that any discrimination in physical science classes likely took place early in the educational history (primary school), which they believe explains women's predisposition to biological sciences," Ecklund said. "However, female scientists believe that discrimination is still occurring in present-day universities and departments."

Regardless of gender or discipline, approximately half of all the scientists interviewed thought that at some point in women's educational lives, they are discouraged from pursing a career in physics.

Other reasons scientists gave to explain the different numbers of women that pursue biology when compared with physics include mentorship of students in the fields of biology and physics and "inherent differences between men and women."

One female scientist said, "I think women ? want to have more of a sense that what they are doing is helping somebody. Maybe there are more women in ? biology (because) you can be like, 'Oh, I am going to go cure cancer.'"

Whereas women often explained sex differences between the disciplines using reasons of emotional affinity, men stressed neurological differences as being responsible for personal choices. One male scientist suggested that there are "some brain differences between men and women that explain (the gender differences between the disciplines)."

Ecklund said, "It's extremely important to understand how scientists at the kind of top research universities we studied feel about this topic, as they train the next generation of researchers and leaders in the sciences and will pass on their ideas to these young scholars."

###

Ecklund authored the article with co-principal investigator Anne Lincoln of Southern Methodist University and former Rice University undergraduate Cassandra Tansey. The paper is part of Ecklund's larger study with Lincoln titled "Perceptions of Women in Academic Science," which examines how male and female biologists and physicists in the U.S. differ in regard to important influences in their science career.

The study was funded by the National Science Foundation and is available online at http://gas.sagepub.com/content/26/5/693.abstract.

High-pressure science gets super-sized

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? The study of materials at extreme conditions took a giant leap forward with the discovery of a way to generate super high pressures without using shock waves whose accompanying heat turns solids to liquid.

This discovery will allow scientists for the first time to reach static pressure levels exceeding four million atmospheres, a high-pressure environment where new unique compounds could be formed, materials change their chemical and physical properties and metals become insulators. An international team of scientists using a new high-pressure anvil design and technique in conjunction with high-energy X-rays was able to create 640 gigapascals, or GPas, of pressure. This is 50 percent more pressure than previously demonstrated and 150 percent more pressure than accessible by typical high-pressure experiments.

Pressures at this level have vast ramifications for earth science, cosmology, chemistry, shock physics and material science. Static pressure of 640 GPa is six million times the pressure of the air at Earth's surface and more than one and a half times the pressure at the center of Earth. Research at these pressures could lead to new revelations about how Earth evolved and how iron, the most abundant material inside Earth's core, functions at extremes.

This new super-high-pressure capability was developed by scientists from the University of Bayreuth in Germany, the University of Chicago and the University of Antwerp in Belgium. The physical properties of tiny materials (less than one micron thick) were investigated in situ at ultra-high pressures with high-resolution micro X-ray diffraction techniques at the GeoSoilEnviro Consortium for Advanced Radiation Sources, or GSECARS, a beamline operated by the University of Chicago at the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. Details appear October 23 in the journal Nature Communications.

"The ability to do static experiments at this pressure range has only been theorized about," said Vitali Prakapenka, an author on the paper and scientist at the Center for Advanced Radiation Sources at the University of Chicago. "We aren't stopping here. We expect to increase the accessible pressure range close to one terapascal, or 10 megabars, to probe materials at conditions corresponding to the core of gas giant planets, such as Uranus and Neptune, which have pressures of about seven megabars."

Previous studies have been limited because the only way to reach such high pressures was to use dynamic compression (shockwaves), which also generate high temperatures and only nanoseconds of observation time. The discovery of a way to apply static pressures allows experimental studies of physical and chemical properties of materials in situ at high pressures with a number of various techniques to test long-held theories, including metallization of hydrogen.

"This new technique could revolutionize the study of high-pressure science," said Leonid Dubrovinsky, one of the paper's authors and a scientist at the University of Bayreuth.

Since the late 1950s, scientists have been using diamond anvil cells to generate extreme pressures to test the durability of materials, to create new properties of materials, such as superconductivity, and to replicate high-pressure conditions of planetary interiors. Yet, until now, scientists have struggled to reach pressures of Earth's inner core, which is 320 to 360 GPa. Only a handful of experiments have been reported at these pressures, and the maximum achieved pressure had been about 420 GPa.

Scientists were able to triple the normal experiment pressure level by adding a second set of micro-anvils (10-20 microns in diameter) between two gem-quality single-crystal diamond anvils of about one-quarter of a carat each. This secondary anvil is made of superhard nanocrystalline diamond semi-balls fabricated from glassy carbon using newly developed technique in a large volume press at high pressure and temperature.

"The nanocrystalline diamond balls have very high yield strength and are less compressible and less brittle than single-crystal diamonds," said Natalia Dubrovinskaia, one of the paper's authors and a scientist at the University of Bayreuth. "That allows us to drastically extend the achievable pressure range using micro-balls as second stage anvils."

The GSECARS beamline is available for use through the general user proposal process at the APS.

Chief: Texas' battered $3B cancer effort endures

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? An embattled $3 billion cancer-fighting fund in Texas will recover from a controversy that led two Nobel laureates and others to resign over allegations that politics trumped science in spending decisions, state officials told stakeholders Wednesday.

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas opened its annual meeting under a cloud of scrutiny brought by the mass resignation of nearly three dozen scientists, some of whom criticized the fund for "hucksterism" and "suspicion of favoritism" on their way out the door.

All were out-of-state peer reviewers, who served on the first line of choosing which proposals were worthy of taxpayer dollars.

The state is trying to reverse the damage this week and kicked off the agency's conference with a vote of support from Dr. Brian Druker, who is behind the breakthrough cancer drug Gleevec and among the world's most foremost cancer researchers.

CPRIT Executive Director Bill Gimson then told a crowd of scientists and industry executives that the agency would flourish despite the fallout, vowing that CPRIT would ultimately rewrite the books on state-led research initiatives.

"We're a learning organization," Gimson said. "We listened. We're committed to getting it right."

After delivering the keynote speech on his research, Druker told The Associated Press he has some concerns about CPRIT's ability to restock its crucial peer review panels following such pointed public criticisms by heavyweights in the science community. But he praised the "integrity" of the agency's leadership and said he was confident of the future.

"They've had some controversy and some concerns and issues," Druker said. "But it's still an unprecedented opportunity. If it's done right, it's going to make a big impact."

Started in 2007 behind a push led by cancer survivor Lance Armstrong and Gov. Rick Perry, CPRIT spent most of its first five years basking in acclaim and industry awe of the unprecedented amount of taxpayer dollars committed to a state-run, cancer-fighting effort. Only the National Institutes of Health now doles out more cancer funding dollars than CPRIT, which has so far awarded nearly $700 million total.

But the plaudits abruptly gave way to rebukes starting in May, and the fissures came from within.

Dr. Alfred Gilman, the agency's chief scientific officer and a Nobel laureate, announced his resignation following a $20 million award that never received a full scientific review. The money was for a so-called incubator project at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, one of the country's top research institutes.

Gilman accused the agency's oversight board of ramrodding the project through the application process, despite the proposal being just six pages long. Gimson has said the type of proposal didn't require a full scientific review under agency rules but has since conceded missteps in how the award was handled.

Candid and inflammatory internal emails later made public ("I told Gimson this was the bomb that would destroy CPRIT") exposed the depths of the rift, and other resignations followed. Thirty-three scientific peer reviewers have since cut ties with the agency, many just this month, which coincided with Gilman's last day.

Gimson repeatedly emphasized the agency's commitment to an inscrutable peer-review process during his opening remarks Wednesday. He added that every grant proposal ever recommended for funding by the agency's science review panels has been approved by the 11-member oversight board, which is made up of political appointees.

The recent barrage of unflattering press has raised concerns among some scientists that the state's annual trough of $300 million in taxpayer funding is at risk. The Texas Legislature reconvenes in January, and lawmakers could cast a more critical eye toward the agency while facing pressures to shrink the state budget.

The bulk of CPRIT grants go to research, but the agency also funds drug-commercializing efforts and prevention programs.

According to Gimson, funds from the agency have enabled 200,000 screenings statewide for cancers include breast and colorectal.

"If the Legislature chooses not to fund it anymore, so much harm would come to people in West Texas that would not come if it remains," said Dr. Patrick Reynolds, director of the cancer center at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. "It's unthinkable."

CPRIT's meeting runs through Friday. The conference also is set to tackle the significant issue of whether CPRIT should put less money into research and more into private startups that are trying to bring drugs to the market. In Texas, the governor's office already doles out hundreds of millions of dollars in private tech investments.

A final decision on whether CPRIT will change its funding allocations is expected next year.

Who Keeps the Data on Third-Party Cloud Services? | JETLaw ...

It wasn?t long after the inception of AOL when email scammers fired up their own computers and began preying on unsuspecting recipients. Back then we all thought that any piece of email which found its way into our cyber mailbox must be legitimate and meant for our eyes only. Little did we know that the scammers and hackers were engaged in a full on assault of our private accounts. Hopefully by now we?ve become a lot smarter with how we use the internet.

As someone who uses the internet for their daily business operations, you have to be even more diligent with regard to security issues. This is especially relevant as we enter into the era of cloud data storage.

The cloud is a type of off site server that allows individuals and companies to store amazing amounts of data for easy access. It?s meant to be a secure system but as we all know there is no such thing as complete security in cyberspace.

Even Dropbox, one of the most reputable and diligent cloud services, found itself the recent victim of a hacking assault. Before you ascend to the cloud you need to consider the ramifications of who really owns your data and what happens to it once you ?let it go.??

The Issue of Ownership

In the cloud, your data and your company?s data could be facing those same kinds of third party intrusions. You need to make sure that the cloud vendor you intend on using won?t be ?opening up the vaults? and sharing your valuable information with outside entities.

One way to mitigate any potential intrusion would be to have it stipulated in a contract the identity of any third party outsourcing entity. It follows then that the third party should also abide by the level of security precautions put into place by the original cloud vendor. Don?t leave something like this to chance or have it get lost in the fine print.

You should also be on the lookout for mergers and acquisitions in the cloud vending community. Companies are being bought, sold and traded at a rapid pace and you need to protect your company?s interests. Computerworld, a leading source of IT information, recommends contract language to protect your data if your vendor is bought by another company. Here is an example of such language suggested by Computerworld:

ASSIGNMENT. This Agreement shall be binding on the parties and their successors (through merger, acquisition or other process) and permitted assigns. Neither party may assign, delegate or otherwise transfer its obligations or rights under this Agreement to a Third Party without the prior written consent of the other party.

The other issue of ownership in the cloud is with regard to copyright. The file-sharing service Megaupload found out about this the hard way when their service was taken offline because of copyright infringements. It turns out some of their users were uploading pirated materials. The result is that everything was shut down in that cloud and the law abiding users found access to their data was blocked. Will your cloud vendor have the ability to filter out copyrighted materials? Can they isolate accounts that might be infringing?

The Issue of Security

No matter what cloud service you are using there is no such thing as complete security. You need to embrace that concept and understand what it means. Recently, 77 million users on the Sony Playstation network found that they were the victim of security breaches when their personal information was hacked and compromised. There is no telling where this information will end up but none of those users was expecting their privacy to be violated from playing a game online and yet that?s just what happened.

Fortunately for Sony this didn?t result in 77 million customers turning in their Playstations but your business reputation is online and ultimately the buck will stop with you. Are you prepared to handle that kind of negative impact on your company?s reputation?

The Issue of Legal Jurisdiction

There is also the consideration of government accessibility. A cloud vendor based in the United States might have to comply with a Patriot Act request for data even if that data is technically stored in a server in Europe or elsewhere. Do you want to be vulnerable to such an inquiry?

At the heart of the cloud legal jurisdiction issue is location. Is your data subject to the laws of U.S. privacy or of the laws where your cloud server is located? Believe it or not this isn?t a matter which has been resolved and might be a case of technology getting out in front of the legal system. A contract with a cloud vendor should designate which body of law will govern the data. That could be a very broad category.

When you control the data in-house then you?ll be able to directly attend to any subpoena request. On the other hand, a cloud vendor could be compelled to surrender that data to a third party without your consent. This is why you should add strict notification clauses in your contract along with limiting the disclosure of your data within the bounds of the governing laws.

The Issue of Compliance

With every new advance comes a new set of regulations. In a consumer based society, it?s important that customers have protections. As someone who is maintaining an online presence for their business you need to make sure those third party hosting sites are in compliance. Although it might seem that the cloud floats over everything, in reality cloud sites are specific to region. Case in point: the Eurozone. The EU Data Protection Act was created to insure residents of the Eurozone that there would be some level of security for their private information. Translation: all that personal information has to be stored within the European Union. To be in compliance means your cloud vender might have to operate in multiple sites. Do you even know where you company servers are actually located?

Have you been scared off of cloud technology yet? Even with all those risk factors, businesses are turning towards cloud technology everyday to improve their efficiency. It?s a low cost alternative to data storage that fits in nicely with the demand of instant access from many devices. However, just because businesses are jumping on the cloud bandwagon doesn?t guarantee safeguards will be fully implemented on every vendor.

Of course, many of the same risks associated with cloud usage can be attributed to internet use in general. We use third party vendors for nearly every aspect of internet use not to mention the basics of power and water. With your company?s reputation at stake you have to be extra diligent whenever you surrender data. Bottom line: Proceed to the cloud with caution.

Accelerated Depreciation Isn't the Cure to Small Business's Problems

As part of an election year effort to show that he?s friendly to small business, President Obama has been claiming recently that he:

?. . .has signed in to law 18 tax cuts that directly help small businesses [including] ?. extended accelerated bonus depreciation for two million businesses.?

Accelerated depreciation allows immediate expensing of investment costs. By increasing near term tax deductions, the White House explains, small business owners get to keep more of their income.

thumbs down flag

Small business advocate, Dorothy Coleman, Vice President for tax and domestic economic policy with the National Association of Manufacturers, agrees, saying depreciation tax breaks:

?Clearly lower the tax costs for investments made by smaller companies.?

But policies like accelerated depreciation are doing little to get small business owners into the President?s camp.

A Manta poll conducted in the beginning of August has 61 percent of small company owners supporting Mitt Romney and only 26 percent supporting the Barack Obama. Moreover, the same poll reveals that 54 percent of small business owners believe that the Republican party is the biggest supporter of small business as compared to only 19 percent who think it?s the Democrats.

While small business owners, no doubt, favor the Republicans for many reasons, one is surely the fact that the President?s policies help few small business owners.

Consider Accelerated Depreciation

The National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) surveys have persistently shown that small business owners believe that weak demand for their products and services is biggest problem they face.

With revenue weak since the start of the Great Recession, few small business owners making capital investments to expand. And if your business isn?t making capital investments, being able to write off their value immediately does little for you.

Moreover, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data shows that sole proprietorships (which make up 72 percent of all small businesses) in very few industries have much depreciation. In 2009, the most recent year of data availability, the depreciation deduction averaged only 6.8 percent of net income for sole proprietorships with net income. In four out of five small businesses operate in industries in which the average depreciation deduction was less than 10 percent of net income.

If You Don?t Have Much Depreciation Expense

Accelerating it doesn?t do much for you.

By the President?s own admission, accelerated bonus depreciation only benefits only 2 million small businesses. With the IRS reporting 31.6 million business tax returns filed in 2008, that means only a little over 6 percent of small businesses benefited from this tax cut.

That?s just not enough small business owners to sway the polling data.

Natural process activating brain's immune cells could point way to repairing damaged brain tissue

Natural process activating brain's immune cells could point way to repairing damaged brain tissue

Monday, October 22, 2012

The brain's key "breeder" cells, it turns out, do more than that. They secrete substances that boost the numbers and strength of critical brain-based immune cells believed to play a vital role in brain health. This finding adds a new dimension to our understanding of how resident stem cells and stem cell transplants may improve brain function.

Many researchers believe that these cells may be able to regenerate damaged brain tissue by integrating into circuits that have been eroded by neurodegenerative disease or destroyed by injury. But new findings by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine suggest that another process, which has not been fully appreciated, could be a part of the equation as well. The findings appear in a study that will be published online Oct. 21 in Nature Neuroscience.

"Transplanting neural stem cells into experimental animals' brains shows signs of being able to speed recovery from stroke and possibly neurodegenerative disease as well," said Tony Wyss-Coray, PhD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences in the medical school and senior research scientist at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. "Why this technique works is far from clear, though, because actually neural stem cells don't engraft well."

Neural stem cells can endure essentially unchanged for decades in two places in the mammalian brain, replicating just enough to meet the routine needs of those regions. In most parts of the brain, they aren't found at all.

While of critical importance to maintaining healthy brain function, true neural stem cells are rare. Far more common are their immediate progeny, which are called neural progenitor cells, or NPCs. These robust, rapidly dividing cells are poised to travel down a committed path of differentiation to yield new brain cells of several different types including neurons.

It's known that treating humans with radiation or drugs that prevent NPC replication causes memory deficits ("chemo brain") and, in children, IQ losses of up to 20 points. Conversely, studies are being initiated to see whether infusing neural stem cells into brains affected by Alzheimer's disease can enhance patients' memory function.

One category of brain cells, microglia, descends not from neural stem cells but from an immune lineage and retains several features of immune cells. "Microglia are the brain's own resident immune cells," Wyss-Coray said. Unlike most other mature brain cells, microglia can proliferate throughout adulthood, especially in response to brain injury. They can, moreover, migrate toward injury sites, secrete various "chemical signaling" substances, and gobble up bits of debris, microbial invaders or entire dead or dying neurons.

Microglia normally are distributed throughout the brain ? rather small, quiescent cells sprouting long, skinny projections that meekly but efficiently survey large areas that, taken together, cover the entire brain. But if this surveillance reveals signs of a disturbance, such as injury or infection, the microglia whirl into action. They begin proliferating and their puny bodies puff up, metamorphosing from mild-mannered Clark Kent-like reporters to buffed Supermen who fly to the scene of trouble, where they secrete substances that can throttle bad actors or call in reinforcements. Within these activated cells, internal garbage disposals called lysosomes form in large numbers and start whirring, ready to make mincemeat out of pathogens or cellular debris.

In addition to their part patrol-officer, part cleanup-crew status, microglia can also secrete substances that help neurons thrive. They also contribute to the ongoing pruning of unneeded connections between neurons that occurs throughout our lives.

But like immune cells elsewhere, said Wyss-Coray, microglia can be a force for evil if they engage in too much or inappropriate activity. They might, for instance, start to remove healthy cells (as occurs in Parkinson's) or stop cleaning up garbage strewn about the brain (for example, Alzheimer's plaque).

In a series of experiments, Wyss-Coray and his colleagues have shown that NPCs secrete substances that activate microglia. First, the researchers observed that microglia were uncharacteristically abundant and activated in the two regions in the mammalian brain where NPCs reside and new neurons are formed. Wondering whether the NPCs might be causing this increased microglial activity, the investigators incubated mouse microglia in a culture medium in which NPCs had previously been steeped. Two days later, they saw that the microglia had multiplied more, expressed different amounts of various signal molecules and featured more lysosomes. "The microglia were ready for action," said Wyss-Coray.

So they injected NPCs into an area of mice's brains where these cells are normally not found. In the same area in the opposing brain hemisphere, they injected a control solution. Again they found significant differences in microglial proliferation and activity, and more microglia in the NPC-injected side had assumed a "Superman" as opposed to a "Clark Kent" body shape. When they repeated this experiment using only the NPCs' "discarded bath water" rather than NPCs themselves, they got similar results.

Clearly NPCs were secreting something, or some things, that were spurring microglia to action.

Using sophisticated lab techniques, the team monitored purified NPCs plus several other cell types found in the brain and assessed nearly 60 different substances known to have powerful cell-to-cell signaling properties. Several such substances, it turned out, were secreted in much larger amounts by NPCs than by the other cell types: most notably, vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF ? a well-known molecule produced by many cell types throughout the body. VEGF stimulates the formation of blood vessels and exerts a beneficial effect on neurons. Conversely, drugs that block VEGF (such as Avastin) are frequently used to combat cancer because tumors require an immense blood supply in order to grow quickly.

VEGF is also known to boost microglial proliferation. Because it is produced in such volumes by NPCs, Wyss-Coray's team wanted to see if VEGF alone could mimic any of the changes wrought by NPCs or their culture-medium-borne detritus. So they injected VEGF into mice's right brain hemisphere, and saline solution into the left ? again with the same outcomes. Taking the opposite tack, the team injected NPC-saturated medium devoid of the cells, as they had done earlier. But this time they first used various laboratory techniques to deplete the fluid of the VEGF secreted by its former inhabitants. Doing this almost completely reversed its microglia-activating effects.

"All of this strongly suggests that VEGF produced by NPCs is playing a strong role in influencing microglial behavior," said Wyss-Coray. "This is important, because in all neurodegenerative diseases we know of we see microglia out of control." The new finding may open the door to reprogramming misbehaving microglia to play better with other cells.

Pet Tips From Sonya | Steve Harvey Show

I saw the show today! I honestly, don?t understand how the pet psychic talked about how one of the dogs liked his blue blanket and another loved the beige carpet. Aren?t dogs supposed to be COLOR BLIND?

My dog Mandi, who is 1 1/2 years old, eats her cloth toys!

You may want to be careful with that. I had a friend whose dog ate at cloth as well and the cloth was collecting in her intestines. The ended having to put the dog through surgery to get it out.

My maltese dog watches TV! When ever there is a dog, cat or any animal she runs to the TV starts barking & jumps up and down trying to get to the animal on the screen. It?s really funny till you are watching a show and she is so noisy and jumping around so you can?t see or hear the TV.

Our ?baby? is a 2 year old 4 legged Kitten, she has a broken leg that DOES NOT stop her. She is so funny and both girls (2 and 7) are very smart and special. Both LOVE Temptation treats! The 2 year old tuggggggs on my covers, pulls cover down, when SHE is ready for a treat. This may happen @ 1:30 A.M. or whenever I am asleep. Loves her treats!

How old and what kind of dog is Gracie?

My dog doesn?t bark that much. He actually talks. He?s learned to make different noises for different needs.

my five babies, know when my truck pulls up, and they know when someone is at the door , and I don?t answer it, I have one that know when something is burning on the stove , she will bark until I get up to see what?s going on, and yes I do strange things with my dogs , like at night when I eat dinner, they all sit in a line and wait until I give them some , I feed them sometimes with a fork or spoon and they don?t drop a crumb?? my son says I should video it, but who cares but me what silly things I do with my dogs?..lmao.

they eat ice like humans eat ice. You can?t say the word outside they know when you are going outside. When they see you putting your shoes and coat on they meet you at the door.

Good luck with my dogs! LOL

Mr.Harvey this english lady is crazy if she thinks a pet will care what time you get home. They just want to eat, sleep,go to the toilet. Geeez!

Fact check: Is China involved in cyber attacks?

October 22, 2012, 7:50 p.m.

Mitt Romney said China was ?stealing our intellectual property? and ?hacking into our computers.?

President Obama did not respond.

In November 2011, the Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive issued a report on cyber-spying that said Chinese entities ?are the world?s most active and persistent perpetrators of economic espionage. Chinese attempts to collect U.S. technological and economic information will continue at a high level and will represent a growing and persistent threat to U.S. economic security."

Members of Congress and independent analysts have said that China has a policy of stealing intellectual property through hacking attacks on U.S. and Western businesses and infrastructure, although many attacks cannot be clearly traced.

The Obama administration has been reluctant to raise the issue publicly because the U.S. government engages in cyber-espionage for national security purposes. In addition, U.S. businesses are often unwilling to acknowledge when they have been the victim of a computer attack or cyber-theft.
