It wasn?t hackers this time. In fact, a group of environmental and social justice organizations representing millions of Canadians blacked out their websites for 24 hours this past June 4 to protest efforts by Canada?s conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper to push through a budget bill that would significantly weaken environmental protections.
Organizations leading the black-out include the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, the David Suzuki Foundation, Ecojustice, Greenpeace, Nature Canada, Sierra Club Canada and World Wildlife Fund Canada, and several others. More than 13,000 other websites?including those of many major U.S. green groups including the Sierra Club?also participated in the black-out and continue to support the effort calling for stronger, not weaker, environmental protections. Reports the Black Out Speak Out website: ?The environmental changes are particularly undemocratic and worrisome given the extent to which the government is going to please powerful oil interests...?
Green leaders say Harper?s motives stem from his interest in expanding and exploiting Canada?s tar sands oil and gas deposits, which constitute the second largest petroleum reserve in the world (after Saudi Arabia?s). ?Harper?s attacks are happening for many reasons, not the least of which was the success of environmental groups in Canada, the U.S. and Europe in threatening what Big Oil wants most: unlimited tar sands expansion and pipelines like the Keystone XL to send its oil around the globe,? reports Michael Marx, director of the U.S. Sierra Club?s Beyond Oil campaign, on the Huffington Post website. ?He put the interests of the oil industry first and looked the other way when it came to enforcing laws about air and water pollution, endangered species and the health of downstream communities.?
Marx says that ?tar sands oil companies are destroying a pristine forest the size of England, accelerating the rate of climate change, causing thousands of wolves, bears, migratory birds, and caribou to die, and leaching toxic chemicals into rivers, as downstream communities experience a spike in cancer rates.?
According to Marx, Harper?s government is trying to disarm its opposition by threatening the charitable status (and thus the fundraising ability) of green groups who oppose tar sands, subjecting them to onerous tax reporting requirements to bog them down. ??Black Out, Speak Out? is a warning that the Harper Government has gone too far,? says Marx. ?This protest has brought together a diverse array of Canadians to defend their democracy and right to have an open debate about the future of their country.?
?Hopefully Black Out, Speak Out will mobilize thousands of Canadians and Harper will learn that it?s one thing to attack environmentalists and quite another to attack freedom of speech,? says Marx. ?If the Harper government pursues this repressive policy, it should expect the backlash to spread in Canada, the U.S. and in Europe.?

Three Of The Most Influential Books I Ever Read | Small Business ...
Recently, Bengal?s quarterback, Adam ?Pacman? Jones went to the NFL Rookie Symposium to tell players what NOT to do.
Relaying a story on how he blew over $1 Million in one weekend, he gave NFL players a money management lesson that hopefully will have significant influence on them.
It?s helpful when someone can make something so crystal clear that you can avoid mistakes and shortcut success simply by reading or hearing their advice?and then taking it.
It is always my hope that my stories and comments will spark useful and profitable ideas for you, help you make good decisions and add value to your business.
When starting out in business I had virtually no hands-on help. I did not attend college.? I had no mentor to teach me. No shining example to follow. I had, mostly books.
I might add what a wonderful thing a book is.
I came to rely on ?print? for both information and motivation. I?m amazed to this day at people who barge into some endeavors without even bothering to find and read the books written about it.
Amazing.
As you gain real life experience, most books turn out to be 90% rehash and you may get only one or two ?gems? out of an entire book?but then, how many gems must you find?
It occurred to me that you might like to investigate further some of the sources of information that have influenced me.
So today, I?d like to give you the source of some of the most significant influences on my beliefs about entrepreneurial success that have been time and experienced tested over the past 35 years and have become permanent parts of my approach to doing business.
My first real ?coach?, on tape (that?s the thing we used to listen to audio on?before CD?s and iPods for those of you too young to remember) was Earl Nightingale. That lead me to ?Think and Grow Rich? by Napolean Hill. (Surely I do not need to tell you who Nightgale or Hill are.)
In a way, ?Think and Grow Rich? led me to James Tolleson, (called by many ?The greatest Dr. Napolean Hill Think & Grow Rich believer of all time?).
That experience led me both into the ?success information? business, the speaking business and direct-response advertising.
That?s one of a number of threads. There are others.
Among my sources that will hopefully move you further along and move you closer to accomplishing your goals are:
W. Clement Stone. He built a giant insurance organization and personal fortune out of the depths of the great Depression, rescued and for many years published ?Success Magazine?, founded and controlled the Napoleon Hill Foundation and was Napoleon Hill?s last business partner.
Stone?s the real deal: he started from scratch with nothing much more than determination and made himself a billionaire, largely from direct sales.? Stone?s book, ?The Success System that Never Fails? is, I think, one of the most interesting and useful how-to-succeed books of all that have been published.
Robert Ringer. His first book: ?Winning Through Intimidation? which is based on his exploits as a real estate wheeler-dealer, I believe had more direct, valuable influence on me than any thirty other books I?ve read combined.
This is a street-smart guy telling it like it is. Many people tell me they find the book?or at just its title without reading the book, offensive. When I hear that, I fear for their chances at survival. Success is a bare-knuckles business. Read Ringer.
Conrad Hilton. Founder of one of the world?s largest hotel organizations, if you could only read three books, I?d suggest Stone?s, Ringer?s and Conrad Hilton?s autobiography, ?Be My Guest?, found free at the bedside table at Hilton hotels.
That is a method I?ve used my whole career?seeking out information that transformed my business and fortune. That is something I?ve done for others too?provide the missing link and how to?s that helped catapult businesses.

Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe
Hot chocolate is one of my absolute favorite things about winter. Whether it?s shopping the outlets on Black Friday, stopping into Starbucks, or taking in a hockey game, hot chocolate is always my drink of choice. Naturally, I don?t tend to drink it during the warmer summer months, but throw a hot chocolate mixture into a blender with some ice and, voila! Like its frappuccino cousin, frozen hot chocolate is a slushy blend that tastes exactly like hot chocolate, but? it?s ice-cold. Genius!
I have been hearing raves from other food bloggers about the best frozen hot chocolate they?ve ever had, hailing from a little place in New York City called Serendipity. Any girl who was a teenager during the late 80?s or 90?s likely watched the movie Say Anything over and over, and over, again. Rewinding the scene where John Cusack holds a boombox above his head blaring Peter Gabriel?s ?In Your Eyes? was absolutely par for the course. If you can?t ever hear that song without being taken back to your high school years, chances are that years later you soaked up another John Cusack film called Serendipity. A few scenes in that movie take place at the actual sweet shop in NYC, which is how I knew about the spot. I have yet to make my way there while in New York, but hearing all of the chatter about it led me to trying out a replica recipe for their signature frozen hot chocolate. I made a couple of little tweaks and think it?s an absolutely wonderful summertime version of my favorite winter drink!
The beauty of this recipe is its ability to be completely customized based on your preferences. You can use whatever type of chocolate you like; I used a blend of milk, semisweet and dark, but you could use all of one type, or even white chocolate, if you prefer. I threw in Ovaltine because (1) I had some in the pantry already, thanks to the Chocolate Buttercream-Frosted Brownies; and (2) I just adore that slight malt flavor that it gives to chocolate. You can use your favorite hot cocoa mix in place of the Ovaltine, if you?d like. The milk is totally forgiving, so throw in whatever you keep on your refrigerator door ? skim, 1%, 2%, whole, even chocolate milk if you want an extra kick of chocolate flavor!
I love everything about this drink-slash-dessert. You can slurp it with a straw or enjoy it with a spoon. It?s part slushy, part granita. It also reminds me a little bit of a Frosty from Wendy?s, although with a little more ice. The chocolate flavor imitates a hot chocolate perfectly; it?s a phenomenal summer drink, especially for those of us who have already begun the countdown to cooler fall days. Who?s with me?!

Frozen Hot Chocolate
Yield: 2 to 3 large servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes
3 ounces chocolate (milk, semisweet or dark), finely chopped
4? teaspoons granulated sugar
2 teaspoons Ovaltine
1? cups milk, divided
3 cups ice1. Place the chocolate in a medium bowl set over a saucepan with about 1 inch of barely simmering water (keep the heat on low). Stir the chocolate occasionally, until it is completely melted and smooth. Add the sugar and Ovaltine and whisk to combine completely. Remove from the heat and slowly whisk in?? cup of the milk until smooth. Allow to cool to room temperature.
2. In a blender, place the remaining 1 cup of milk, the chocolate mixture and the ice. Blend on high speed until smooth and slushy. Pour into servings glasses and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Friday Illusion: Brain builds swinging tower of Pisa

Luckily, if you see a swinging tower of Pisa, it's likely to be all in your mind. A new animation created by Sebastiaan Mathot from VU University in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, exploits a classic brain trick to design a series of columns that seem to sway back and forth. In reality, the towers are always perfectly straight.
The effect is a nice illustration of the way our visual system tends to perceive whole objects rather than their components. Although Mathot's design is actually a bunch of carefully-positioned lines, we initially see the larger bands. "If we see a chair, for example, we don't consider the parts of the chair separately, one at a time," writes Mathot. "In other words, we automatically group objects together into a single, coherent percept."
The tilting column is a result of the way our brain forms groupings based on proximity and similar colour. The misaligned dashes in this video appear as black pairs and white pairs rather than as individual strokes. Then, since the positioning within each grouping is skewed, our brain notices the jagged edge, but simplifies it into a smoother tilt.? By switching the black and white areas in the design, the tilt of the pairs changes direction and the overall columns seem to swing.

Protesters In Egypt Pelt Hillary Clinton's Motorcade With Tomatoes, Shoes

CAIRO, July 15 (Reuters) - Protesters threw tomatoes and shoes at U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's motorcade on Sunday during her first visit to Egypt since the election of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.
A tomato struck an Egyptian official in the face, and shoes and a water bottle landed near the armoured cars carrying Clinton's delegation in the port city of Alexandria.
A senior state department official said that neither Clinton nor her vehicle, which were around the corner from the incident, were struck by any of the projectiles.
Protesters chanted: "Monica, Monica", a reference to Former President Bill Clinton's extra-marital affair. Some chanted: "leave, Clinton", Egyptian security officials said.
It was not clear who the protesters were or what political affiliations they had. Protesters outside Clinton's hotel on Saturday night chanted anti-Islamist slogans, accusing the United States of backing the Muslim Brotherhood's rise to power.
The assault on her motorcade came on a day Clinton spoke at the newly re-opened U.S. consulate in Alexandria, addressing accusations the United States, which had long supported former President Hosni Mubarak, of backing one faction or another in Egypt following his ouster last year.
"I want to be clear that the United States is not in the business, in Egypt, of choosing winners and losers, even if we could, which of course we cannot," Clinton said.
Clinton also met the country's top general, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, on Sunday to discuss Egypt's turbulent democratic transition as the military wrestles for influence with the new president.
RIGHTS OF ALL
The meeting came a day after she met Mursi, whose powers were clipped by the military days before he took office.
Mursi fired back by reinstating the Islamist-dominated parliament that the army leadership had disbanded after a court declared it void, deepening the stand-off before the new leader even had time to form a government.
The result has been acute political uncertainty as the various power centres try to find a way to get along in a country that still has no permanent constitution, parliament or government more than a year after Mubarak's downfall.
In their hour-long meeting, Clinton and Tantawi discussed Egypt's political transition and the military's "ongoing dialogue with President Mursi," a U.S. official travelling with Clinton said in an email brief.
"Tantawi stressed that this is what Egyptians need most now - help getting the economy back on track," the official said.
Clinton "stressed the importance of protecting the rights of all Egyptians, including women and minorities".
The talks also touched on the increasingly lawless Sinai region and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
Speaking after the meeting, Tantawi said the army respected the presidency but would not be deterred from its role of "protecting" Egypt.
"The armed forces and the army council respects legislative and executive authorities," he said in a speech to troops in the city of Ismailia. "The armed forces would not allow anyone to discourage it from its role in protecting Egypt and its people."
TIES STRAINED
Ties with the United States, which provides Egypt with an annual $1.3 billion in military aid, were strained this year when Egyptian judicial police raided the offices of several U.S.-backed non-governmental organisations on suspicion of illegal foreign funding and put several Americans on trial.
The spat ended when Egyptian authorities allowed the U.S. citizens and other foreign workers to leave the country.
During her speech, Clinton said: "When we talk about supporting democracy, we mean real democracy."
"To us real democracy means that every citizen has the right to live, work and worship as they choose, whether they are man or woman, Christian or Muslim."
"Real democracy means that no group or faction or leader can impose their will, their ideology, their religion, their desires on anyone else."
That was a message she is likely to have repeated in meetings on Sunday with women and Christians, both groups that fear their rights may be curtailed under a Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government.
"She wanted, in very, very clear terms, particularly with the Christian group this morning, to dispel that notion and to make clear that only Egyptians can choose their leaders, that we have not supported any candidate, any party, and we will not," a senior U.S. official told reporters. Philippines willing to assist stuck Chinese ship

MANILA, Philippines?The Philippines is closely watching what China will do to rescue one of its frigates that has run aground on a reef 111 kilometers away from Palawan, Malaca?ang said on Saturday.
Abigail Valte, a spokesperson for President Benigno Aquino, said also that a diplomatic protest was something the Department of Foreign Affairs will have to consider with respect to the Chinese People?s Liberation Army?s naval ship No. 560 getting stuck at the Hasa-hasa Shoal, also known as the Half Moon Shoal.
?If assistance is required then we are duty-bound to render it. Dispute or no dispute we will render assistance?if it?s needed. Allow me to make that clarification because I did see a report from the Chinese embassy saying that the rescue from their side is underway,? Valte said over state-run radio dzRB.
Asked if the Philippines would make sure that the Chinese frigate is removed from the Hasa-hasa Shoal, Valte said, ?We will be monitoring the progress of the rescue.?
Valte said the situation was already being dealt with at the moment but added she could not reveal details of the Philippine government?s response at this time.
?What we can say is that if assistance is required, we will render it. It seems, to my knowledge, assistance has not been asked for but it will be given if it is,? Valte said.
Asked whether the government would file another diplomatic protest over the most recent incident, Valte said, ?That is something that would have to be considered by the Department of Foreign Affairs.?

All eyes on JPMorgan as banks report earnings
NEW YORK (AP) ? It's been a scandal-filled few months for banks.
JPMorgan Chase revealed a $2 billion trading loss, triggering an investigation by the government and hearings in Congress. Then the large banks were implicated in a global dust-up over interest rate manipulation.
All this happened amid signs of a slowdown in the U.S. and Chinese economies and a debt crisis in Europe, which won't help the banks as they report their financial results for April through June.
All eyes will be on JPMorgan on Friday, when it becomes the first bank to report. The trading loss rattled the company's stock price and hurt both its reputation and that of CEO Jamie Dimon, who is expected to provide an update.
JPMorgan, the country's largest bank, has scheduled a conference call with analysts to start at 7:30 a.m., two hours before the stock market opens. The call usually happens at 9 a.m. The bank has also doubled the length of the call, to two hours.
Besides its usual presenters, Dimon and chief financial officer Douglas Braunstein, the bank will also have Mike Cavanaugh available to answer questions. Cavanaugh leads a team of senior executives overseeing the loss.
Analysts aren't expected to give the company a pass.
"We expect a detailed account of what went wrong, what has changed and what is remaining," says Jason Goldberg, a bank analyst at Barclays Capital, a global investment bank.
Goldberg, like most investors and analysts, has no idea how deep JPMorgan's loss is. He said it could range from $2 billion to $9 billion. JPMorgan has said it lost the money trying to hedge against financial risk.
JPMorgan's stock has been pummeled, falling from $40.74 before the announcement of the trading loss on May 10 to about $34.59 on Wednesday.
Other bank stocks have also been dragged down because of uncertainty over how Europe is handling its debt crisis, the recession that has gripped some countries there and economic slowdowns in China and India.
Those worries have led to fewer corporate deals, such as mergers and acquisitions, which require Wall Street help and provide much-needed fees for the big banks.
Companies are also putting their growth strategies on ice, which means they are raising less money on Wall Street to pursue their strategies. That translates to lower fees, too.
Most analysts have recently reduced earnings estimates for banks and also downgraded several stocks. Goldberg cut profit estimates for JPMorgan twice during the quarter, and reduced Bank of America's by 3 cents and Citigroup's by 19 cents.
Here's what to expect from major banks. Expectations are compiled from analysts surveyed FactSet, a provider of financial data.
JPMORGAN CHASE
? Reports: Friday.
? Forecast: Profit of 76 cents per share on revenue of $21.8 billion.
? What to watch for: Despite its trading loss, the bank is expected to report a profit for the quarter. Investors are more interested in what the bank has to say about the trading loss, which has given bank management sleepless nights and sent heads rolling. Bank analyst David Konrad at brokerage Keefe, Bruyette & Woods says clarity will be key. "Management's ability to get the transaction behind the bank is more important than the actual size of the loss," Konrad says.
WELLS FARGO
? Reports: Friday.
? Forecast: Profit of 81 cents per share on revenue of $21.3 billion.
? What to watch for: Wells is expected to benefit from record low mortgage rates, high refinancing and improved housing sales in the past three months. Because of its focus on basic banking offerings such as mortgages, Wells is also shielded from poor performance of investment banking divisions at other large banks.
CITIGROUP
? Reports: Monday.
? Forecast: Profit of 89 cents per share on revenue of $18.9 billion.
? What to watch for: Citi is the most global bank and is a large underwriter of debt and equity. The global economic slowdown and uncertainty is expected to hurt Citi's business and also reduce the fees that it can collect from helping corporations with their financial markets transactions.
GOLDMAN SACHS
? Reports: Tuesday.
? Forecast: Profit of $1.28 per share on revenue of $6.4 billion.
? What to watch for: Goldman's primary business is investment banking. It advises corporations on strategies such as acquisitions and helps clients like pension funds make big trades. Both of those areas were slow in the past three months. Analyst David Trone at brokerage firm JPM Securities reduced his estimates for Goldman's earnings by 24 cents per share. He expects trading revenue at Goldman to plunge 28 percent.
BANK OF AMERICA
? Reports: Wednesday, July 18.
? Forecast: Profit of 16 cents per share on revenue of $22.7 billion.
? What to watch for: More cost-cutting. Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan said last September that the bank would cut 30,000 jobs to save $5 billion a year by 2014. With slow economic growth in the U.S. and abroad and new laws banning certain fees, bankers seem to have run out of ideas to grow. Barclays analyst Goldberg says the bank's cost-cutting plan, dubbed New BAC, is just a fancy name to make up for "less than desired" growth in its revenue.
MORGAN STANLEY
? Reports: Thursday, July 19.
? Forecast: Profit of 34 cents per share on revenue of $7.7 billion.
? What to watch for: Morgan Stanley, like Citi and Goldman, is vulnerable to weaker sales and trading of bonds and shares.

Farmer says drought turns cattle ranch into 'desert'
NBC's Janet Shamlian reports from Arkansas, where severe drought has turned pasture into "desert," threatening the future of the cattle ranching industry.

ATKINS, Ark. ? Drought now covers more than half of the lower 48 states but few have it as rough as Arkansas, where the entire state is listed as suffering from lower than average precipitation.
"It's just devastating," cattle rancher Karen Haralson told NBC News.?Having never seen her land this barren, she compares her ranch to "a desert."
Haralson has had to sell 100 of her 250 cows and ranchers across drought-hit areas are doing the same -- a trend that could raise beef prices next year, when fewer cows will be around to sell.
Forecasters say four to six inches of rain are needed to end the drought in Arkansas. Some rain is likely over the next few days, but there's nothing that significant on the horizon.
Indeed, drought conditions have only expanded and intensified in recent weeks, according to the weekly Drought Monitor compiled by the National Weather Service.
The service's Seasonal Drought Outlook for July-September offered little reason for hope. Arkansas was among the states were drought conditions were expected to persist.
For Haralson and other ranchers there's a real possibility of going bust.
"If no significant rain comes," she said, "I'll have to go out of business."
