Taste amazing cocktails at Mai Tai Lounge, Orion Mall, Bangalore ...

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:13 pm by dhempe

Being a foodie and some one who loves Cocktails, I was really pleased when I got an invitation to check out the Mai Tai Lounge in Orion Mall, Bangalore. My idea of a Cocktail was just a Long Island Ice Tea or a Cosmopolitan?at the most! I was surprised to know that Mai Tai lounge specializes itself in Cocktails and was raring to try them so I went with my wife and friends to try it out!

At Mai Tai Lounge, we were greeted by General Manager Gautam Yadav and Bar Manager Shibu Joseph. Both of them explained to us the 75 year old history of Trader Vic?s and the concept of Polinesian?food along with signature cocktails which they serve there. The location of the Mai Tai Lounge was very nice as it looked over the artificial lake at the spanking new Orion Mall in Yeshwantpur, Bangalore. We sat at the following inviting table which was one of the most comfortable lounge spaces that I have ever seen!

We started our journey with the original cocktail known as the Trader Vic?s Mai Tai Original Cocktail made from the recipe invented way back in 1944! Legend has it that Trader Vic pulled down a bottle of seventeen-year old J.Wray Nephew Rum from Jamaica, squeezed a lime, added a dash of sugar syrup along with a splash of orange curaco and French orgeat and poured it over ice ? thus was born the Trader Vic?s Mai Tai Original Cocktail! We tried it out in the signature glassware which is imported all the way from the USA! It gave a perfect look to the cocktail which we enjoyed with long straws which didn?t require us to bend too low to taste our drinks!

The next cocktail which my wife and I tried was the Tiki Puka Puka which had 3 styles of rums, orange juice, grenadine & spices. It was a drink to take us back to the?Hawaiian?islands! It was wonderfully served in a festival communal bowl the way most ancient Polinesian ceremonial Lau drinks were served since centuries! The delightful flavors in the drink left us wanting for more as we slowly slipped into a state of feeling ?happy high?!

Another ceremonial Lau drink served in a festive communal bowl was the king of the cocktails as I would call it ? Trader Vic?s Rum Cup ? which was a frosty froth of fine rums, orange, lemon, lime and liquors. This was the highlight of our evening as all of us took our straws and started sipping one of the best cocktails I had ever tasted! We didn?t want to get wasted but this drink made us pretty high and we were famished tasting all these drinks so we dug into some of the tastiest?Polinesian food available at the Mai Tai Lounge!

One of the best chicken wings that I have ever had anywhere in the world (and I have had the original Buffalo wings in Buffalo, USA too!) was the Kung Pao Chicken Wings at Mai Tai Lounge ? spicy chilli glaze on top of the juicy and flash fried Chicken Wings sprinkled with crushed peanuts for a yummy taste! Served with a tangy sauce, we were licking our fingers not just with anticipation but with?stupendous?taste which I never tasted anywhere!

Another one of my personal favorites (though the wifey couldn?t have it!) was the Maui Waui Shrimp which was Prawns with Maui Dressing and served with a sprinkling of crushed coconuts and cilantro. I added a dash of lemon juice on top of the prawns to make the taste more appealing to my Palate. My taste buds thanked me for this as they were exuberant after having tasted the Shrimps!

Generally a place where you have wonderful cocktails and amazing finger food, you will not find good main course items to finish your meal. Mai Tai lounge is an exception though as it offers a complete dining experience not just with drinks and starters but also with an elaborate veg and non-veg main course menus. I went for a Mai Tai Island Burger which had a chicken patty, Cho Cho Glaze and was served with Island Slaw and Spiced French Fries. This was actually a meal meant for two so I shared it with my wife and we were blown away by the wonderful flavors in the burger.

My friends tried Chilli Basa Ciabatta which had the grilled basa fish which was marinated with chill-lime, asian tartar sauce and served along with French fries. They said it was delightful and the taste was endearing!

It was a perfect night of tasting good cocktails, amazing food and lots of fun with friends at The Mai Tai Lounge in Orion Mall, Bangalore!

Ultrabook sales up in first half of 2012, Windows 8 waits patiently

We've seen so much Ultrabook news recently we're beginning to think they're catching on. Market research firm the NPD Group has stepped in to confirm our suspicions, reporting a 39 percent jump in sales of premium Windows laptops (900 bucks and up) during the first five months of this year, compared with the same period in 2011. Despite a three percent drop in sales of $700-plus Windows notebooks, the Ultrabook share of this bracket increased steadily to nearly 11 percent. The analysts predict sales of these lower-end models will pick up as back-to-school purchases sooth the post-summer blues, with a general boost to the whole Ultrabook market expected when Windows 8 arrives. One thing the figures don't tell us is what impact these sales are having on the revenue of Apple's skinny flagship, but we'd sure like to know. If numbers are your thing, the PR is past the break.

Fsbo - The Process of Selling Your Home Yourself

Sell your home yourself and get full selling price and pay no charges. Selling property quick hasn't been a simple job. Selling your home straight to the buyer gives you much more advantages. Because there would be no presence of the realtor who may have other interests in mind. Individuals thinking about purchasing a house would benefit largely with for sale by owner purchases. Selling your home by using a property buying clients are just a little known technique that everybody is using to sell homes quick in the present market. Sellers have bombarded the property market due to the present economic turmoil. Selling your property the for sale by owner way can be quite attractive because you pay simply no commissions and possess total treatments for your sale. Selling real estate through the fsbo style is usually debated within the real estate community. We definitely do not blame you for selling your home yourself, instead of using the assistance of a realtor.

Any amendments or supplements to buy contracts should be written on the standard addenda. These forms offer most frequent amendments and changes to buy contracts. Due to this you will have limited contact with qualified buyers. If your seller promotes a house like a fsbo, along with a buyer who isn't dealing with a realtor desires to get your home, the seller pays simply no commission because without any realtors play in the process. So that you can simplify the owner finance scenario, you should have a potential investor prepared for the freshly developed income. These kind of homes are available on fsbo listings that are offered on the internet. While a for sale by owner purchase can eliminate the presence of a realtor within the deal, it'll bring on a lot more responsibilities and dangers for both buyer and seller.

Aspen real estate companies

Consumers of fsbo houses can meet online, with useful resources directories for lawyers, appraisers, home loan and home remodeling companies. These types of sites area websites that will help you receive serious buyers. You can find houses or market and sell your very own for sale by owner property. You can also bargain with the seller to get a cheaper closing price, assuming you if have done your research on the house.

Selling a house is not really that easy. Selling real estate on your own also needs lots of work, from forms to marketing to showing prospects the house. Selling real estate for sale by owner puts sellers inside a hard position. Due to the responsibilities normally handled through the realtor is now at the disposal of the vendor. Selling real estate requires an in-depth and thorough knowledge of the housing industry. You have to be aware of things like how to locate the best motivated buyers, and several other steps that result in a successful sale. Selling a house is as crucial as purchasing one. I purchase properties all the time and something benefit of selling to a trader is that you can stay in the home until your brand-new rentals are ready to transfer to. Should you ever consider selling your home keep in mind to provide a trader a call.

Another tropical depression was born in the western North Pacific, and NASA's Terra satellite captured an infrared image of the newborn cyclone. Tropical depression Doksuri, known in the Philippines as Dindo, was born during the early hours of June 26, 2012 in the western North Pacific Ocean.

The Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument onboard NASA's Terra satellite as captured an infrared image of the newborn storm on June 26 at 0228 UTC. The image revealed higher thunderstorms around the center of Tropical Depression Doksuri that were casting shadows on the lower, less potent storms surrounding them. The bands of thunderstorms wrapping into the center of the circulation appear fragmented on infrared imagery. Satellite imagery also shows that the southwestern quadrant has a large area of strong convection (rising air that forms thunderstorms that make up the tropical cyclone) and thunderstorms.

At 1500 UTC (11 a.m .EDT) it was located 545 nautical miles (627 miles/1,009 km) east of Manila, Philippines, near 14.6 North and 130.3 West. It was moving to the west at 10 knots (11.5/18.5 kph)and had maximum sustained winds near 30 knots (34.5 mph/55.5 kph). It is expected to intensify as it is in an area of warm sea surface temperatures, and wind shear is expected to relax. Doksuri is forecast to pass north of Lumon Island, then skirt the coast of China.

Trains collide in Okla., spark fire; 3 missing

Trudy Hart / Guymon Daily Herald

Smoke rises from the scene of a train collision Sunday near Goodwell, Okla.

Two trains collided Sunday near the Oklahoma Panhandle town of Goodwell, sparking a diesel fire and forcing the closure of a stretch of highway. Three people were missing.

The accident happened?shortly after?10 a.m. on tracks about two miles east of Goodwell. A westbound train consisting of three locomotives and 80 rail cars collided with an eastbound intermodal train consisting of four locomotives and 108 rail cars, Union Pacific Railroad spokeswoman Raquel Espinoza told msnbc.com.

One conductor and one engineer were aboard each of the trains. The conductor of the westbound train escaped but the other three crewmembers were unaccounted for, Espinoza said.

The collision ignited a diesel fuel blaze that sent a huge plume of black smoke billowing into the air.

"Firefighters are on scene trying to put the?fire out. We?are doing everything we can to find the other three crew members," she said.

The westbound train was carrying finished automobiles and the eastbound rain had mixed freight. The two lead locomotives of the first train and the first locomotive on the second train caught fire, Espinoza said.

There was one container on the intermodal train that was filled with a potentially hazardous resin solution but it was not?on fire, Espinoza said.?"However, we are pouring water in the container as a precaution," she said.

The conductor who survived was not hurt but was "very shaken up," Espinoza said. "We have people making sure he?s OK and trying to get some information from him," she added.

The Guymon Police Department issued this statement on its Facebook page:

Emergency Alert: Train accident east of Goodwell on Hwy 54 has potential for explosion, is not stable, Hwy 54 closed, as well as County roads nearby. DO NOT attempt to visit site. Everyone can view local media Facebook sites for immediate updates. Please allow emergency responders to handle the accident swiftly without interruption.

Goodwell is about 270 miles northwest of Oklahoma City.

Timbers take care of Sounders

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:34 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland Timbers vanquished their archrivals and took some pressure off their embattled coach.

Kris Boyd scored his fifth goal of the season, David Horst converted a header and the Timbers earned a much-needed 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders on Sunday.

"I thought we showed an unbelievable amount of character," said Portland coach John Spencer, who had been dealing with reports he was on the hot seat. "When (people) say players are not playing for me, I didn't see anyone not playing for me today."

Portland (4-6-4) jumped ahead early and held off the attacking Sounders for its first win in the league series since joining the MLS last year.

The Timbers went up in the 16th minute when Boyd slipped past the defense and sent a cross from Steven Smith into the net. David Horst scored on a header nine minutes later for the 2-0 lead.

Seattle (7-5-4) saw its winless streak extend to seven games, the longest in its MLS history, now in its fourth season. Seattle was coming off a 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City and a 4-1 loss to Montreal. Still, the Sounders were favored against Spencer's unseasoned Portland squad.

The Timbers entered the match in last place in the Western Division and 16th in the league in goals with 12. Portland took its third shutout in five games last Sunday in a 1-0 loss to the L.A. Galaxy. The team's disappointing start to the season and flagging offense led to media reports this week that Spencer's job could be in jeopardy if the Timbers fell flat against Seattle.

The Timbers weren't flat but the early lead didn't feel permanent against the aggressive Sounders.

Eddie Johnson dribbled past Horst and fired a shot past straining keeper Troy Perkins into the far corner of the net in the 59th minute. Freddy Montero had a narrow miss in the 74th minute and Johnson narrowly missed a header in stoppage time.

As the Sounders kept up a desperate attack, the game became chippy, leading to several pushing and shoving incidents toward the end. Montero and Portland's Lovel Palmer were both issued red cards in the final minutes.

It was the third MLS meeting for the longtime Cascadia Cup rivals. Last year, in Portland's inaugural season, the teams played to a draw in Seattle before the Sounders won 3-2 in Portland.

While Boyd said the win served "to get everybody off our backs and show that we can play," Horst said things never seemed that dire. He saw the win as an opportunity to build.

"Last year, we had a turning point (in a 3-0 win over the league-leading Galaxy), where we had a little run," the defender said. "Hopefully, that's what this is - a turning point."

FACT CHECK: Romney, Obama on immigration plans

(AP) ? President Barack Obama flatly blamed Republicans on Friday for failing to support immigration reforms in the last few years.

But Obama didn't tell the whole story in his speech to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. His own Democratic colleagues had a hand in defeating one immigration bill two years ago.

A day earlier, presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney promised in a speech to the same group that he would ease the path to a green card, fix a complicated and cumbersome system to let farm workers into the United States and finish a high-tech fence along the Mexican border. He was glossing over how difficult some of those changes could be. Some already have been tried, with little or no success.

Here's a closer look at Obama's statement, Romney's assertions and how they match up with the facts:

OBAMA: "We should have passed the DREAM Act a long time ago. It was written by members of both parties. When it came up for a vote a year and a half ago, Republicans in Congress blocked it. The bill hadn't changed. The need hadn't changed. The only thing that had changed was politics."

THE FACTS: Five Senate Democrats voted against sending the DREAM Act to the Senate floor for full consideration. The bill would have created a path to citizenship for many young illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children. Last week, Obama announced plans to stop deporting illegal immigrants who would have qualified for the DREAM Act. The policy change does not include a path to citizenship.

ROMNEY: "As president, I'd reallocate green cards to those seeking to keep their families under one roof. And we will exempt from caps the spouses and minor children of legal permanent residents. And we will eliminate other forms of bureaucratic red tape that keep families from being together." He added: "And if you get an advanced degree here, we want you to stay here. So I'd staple a green card to the diploma of someone who gets an advanced degree in America."

THE FACTS: It's unclear whether Romney would have the authority if elected president to change the way green cards are issued, or whether he would need help from Congress. It is Congress that sets the annual limits for visas for foreigners who have advanced degrees in certain fields of science, math and other professions. Lately, Republicans and groups representing U.S. workers have blocked legislative attempts to increase those limits.

Advocates for immigration reform have long argued that the president can use executive powers to relax or change various immigration regulations. President Barack Obama has done that twice in the last year. First, he allowed prosecutors discretion to focus deportation of illegal immigrants on those with a criminal record or who otherwise pose a threat. Last week, he announced plans to stop deporting many young illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children who have not committed a crime in the U.S. and to grant them work permits.

Republicans have argued that Obama stretched his authority, but Romney seems to be suggesting he, too, could act alone to make broad changes.

And Romney's proposal for keeping educated foreigners in the U.S. isn't original. Obama, in a May 2011 immigration proposal, called for "encouraging foreign students to stay in the U.S. and contribute to our economy by stapling a green card to the diplomas" of those with advanced science, technology, engineering and math degrees.

ROMNEY: "I will work with states and employers to update our temporary worker visa program so that it meets our economic needs."

THE FACTS: Temporary and seasonal workers are considered a necessity for the U.S. agriculture industry, but importing legal workers has proved difficult. The Labor Department's visa program for temporary seasonal workers has long been viewed as costly, cumbersome and inefficient.

Several attempts to overhaul it that included a path to legalization for the workers have been blocked in Congress. Republicans have repeatedly said that any immigration bill offering a path to legalization would not win their support.

ROMNEY: "We should field enough Border Patrol agents, complete a high-tech fence and implement an improved exit verification system."

THE FACTS: Romney's plans don't take notice of what's already been done, including record-high staffing levels along the border and the failure of a Bush-era virtual fence plan.

The Border Patrol has more than 18,500 agents working on the southern border. In the year budget ending last September, agents apprehended about 340,000 illegal immigrants, the fewest in nearly 40 years ? an average of 18 apprehensions per agent. The decrease in apprehensions has been linked to a weak economy producing fewer jobs in the U.S. and to more law enforcement agents and technology being deployed along the border.

Under the Bush administration, the government built hundreds of miles of fencing along the Mexican border. A planned virtual fence was also started, but then scrapped by the Obama administration in 2010 after the project was deemed a failure. About 53 miles of virtual fencing is in place, at a cost of about $1 billion.

An exit verification system has been sought since after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, but efforts to build one have been repeatedly stymied, most often because of the projected costs. Earlier this year, John Cohen, deputy counterterrorism coordinator for the Homeland Security Department, told a congressional panel that the agency was finalizing plans for a biometric data system to track who leaves the country and when. He didn't give details.

Obama revels in support from Latinos, swipes Romney

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida (Reuters) - President Barack Obama reveled in the support of Latino leaders on Friday and took a swipe at his election rival Mitt Romney for giving mixed messages on how to handle illegal immigration.

In an emotive speech to Hispanic public officials meeting in Florida, Obama reminded the friendly audience that Romney had promised to veto the DREAM Act, which would help the children of illegal immigrants win citizenship.

Obama told the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials conference that he chose last week to halt the possible deportations of 800,000 young illegal immigrants because Congress was stalling on the issue.

"I refused to keep looking young people in the eye, deserving young people in the eye, and tell them tough luck," he said, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd that gave Romney a cool reception the day before.

"Your speaker from yesterday has a different view. In a speech he said that when he makes a promise to you, he'll keep it. Well he has promised to veto the DREAM Act, and we should take him at his word," the Democratic president said.

"I'm just sayin'," he added, to laughter.

A poll released on Friday by Latino Decisions and America's Voice found Obama had a commanding lead over Romney among Hispanics in election battleground states including Florida, Colorado and Virginia.

In the five states combined, Obama leads Romney among Hispanics by 63 percent to 27 percent.

Obama's recent focus on immigration has helped perk up his campaign, which sagged earlier in June as economic bad news rolled in and the president committed a misstep by claiming that the struggling private sector was in fact doing fine.

A rise by former Massachusetts Governor Romney in the polls appeared to slow this week, although a Pew Research Center survey on Friday put Obama's lead at only 4 percentage points, from 7 points last May.

Romney's campaign suffered on Friday from new accusations about Bain Capital, where he made much of his $250 million fortune as a private equity executive in the 1980s and '90s.

The Washington Post reported that Bain invested in firms that specialized in relocating jobs done by American workers to new facilities in low-wage countries like China and India.

"(Romney) often says, ?I know why jobs come and why jobs go.' Well, yeah, one of the reasons they go is because you have firms who are counseling people on how to offshore and outsource their jobs, that's one reason they go, so, yeah, he knows a lot about it," Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod told reporters.

STANDING OVATIONS

Obama received standing ovations from much of the crowd in Florida when he talked about healthcare reform and his decision not to target young illegal immigrants for deportation.

"This was an Obama crowd anyway. Even though Obama's not Latino, he hit on key cultural points - hardworking, education. That's something we wear on our sleeves," said Tony Cardenas, a Democratic city councilman from Los Angeles.

Obama also pledged to make overhauling U.S. immigration rules to better serve businesses and make life easier for families and workers core to his economic agenda in a second term.

But Hispanics are still upset at his failure to deliver on comprehensive immigration reform and Latinos have been badly hit by the slow economy.

"No election-year speech can cover up the president's job-killing policies that have led to 11 percent Hispanic unemployment and millions of Hispanics living in poverty," Romney campaign spokesperson Amanda Henneberg said.

There are more than 50 million people with Latin American roots living in the United States. Hispanics are the fastest-growing U.S. minority group and could decisively influence the presidential election result in November.

Romney angered many Hispanics during the Republican primary season by saying illegal immigrants could "self deport" out of the country. He changed his tone at the NALEO conference on Thursday, stressing immigration was essential to U.S. economic prosperity, but offered few details on his approach to dealing with those now living illegally in the country.

A Hispanic former member of Senator John McCain's 2008 presidential bid acknowledged on Friday that Romney was going to struggle to win votes from the Hispanic community.

"Obama giving my Democrat colleagues a lot more to work with, than Romney gave me yesterday at #NALEO. It ain't going to be easy, folks," Ana Navarro, who was McCain's national Hispanic co-chairwoman, wrote on Twitter.

(AP) ? Fewer Americans believe the economy is getting better and a majority disapproves of how President Barack Obama is handling it, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney has exploited those concerns and moved into a virtually even position with the president.

Three months of declining job creation have left the public increasingly glum, with only 3 out of 10 adults saying the country is headed in the right direction. Five months before the election, the economy remains Obama's top liability.

Obama has lost the narrow lead he held just a month ago among registered voters. In the new poll, 47 percent say they will vote for the president and 44 percent for Romney, a difference that is not statistically significant. The poll also shows that Romney has recovered well from a bruising Republican primary, with more of his supporters saying they are certain to vote for him now.

Still, in a measure of Romney's own vulnerabilities, even some voters who say they support Romney believe the president will still be re-elected. Of all adults polled, 56 percent believe Obama will win a second term.

With his Republican nomination now ensured, Romney has succeeded in unifying the party behind him and in maintaining a singular focus on making the election a referendum on Obama's handling of the economy. The poll is not good news for the president, and it reflects fluctuations in the economy, which has shown both strength and weakness since it began to recover from the recent recession. The new survey illustrates how an ideologically divided country and a stumbling recovery have driven the two men into a tight match.

About half ? 49 percent ? approve of how Obama is handling his job as president, dropping him below the 50 percent mark he was above in May. Disapproval of Obama is highest ? 55 percent ? for his handling of the economy. Still, registered voters are split virtually evenly on whether Romney or Obama would do a better job improving it.

"I'm not going to vote for Obama," said Raymond Back, a 60-year-old manufacturing plant manager from North Olmsted, Ohio, one of the most competitive states in this election. "It's just the wrong thing to go. I don't know what Romney is going to do, but this isn't the right way."

Obama's overall 49 percent approval rating is not unlike the approval ratings George W. Bush faced in June 2004 during his re-election campaign, when he and his Democratic challenger, John Kerry, were also locked in a dead heat.

The polling numbers come as no surprise to either camp. Both Romney and Obama advisers have anticipated a close contest that will be driven largely by economic conditions. The Obama camp is busy trying to define Romney, hoping it is reaching more independents like Doss Comer, 58, of Jacksonville, N.C., who said he would vote for Obama again, despite the lagging economy.

"I think we are on the wrong track," he said. "We're not getting anywhere. We're not growing. The unemployment rate just spiked up again." But, he added: "I don't trust Romney because of what he's doing. He's telling his business experience, that he was an investor in business. ... I don't think he has the right background any more than Obama."

Besides weak job growth and still high unemployment, Obama is at the mercy of European countries struggling with a debt crisis that has already sent ripples across the Atlantic. At the same time, there are signs that the housing industry may be on the mend. U.S. builders started work on more single-family homes in May and requested the most permits to build homes and apartments in 3 1/2 years.

Those types of crosscurrents are also evident in politics. While preferences for November are evenly split, a majority believes Obama will still be re-elected, a shift from an even split on the question seven months ago. In December, 21 percent of Republicans said they thought Obama would win re-election; that's risen to 31 percent now. And among independents, the share saying Obama will win has climbed from 49 percent to 60 percent. Among Democrats, it was 75 percent in both polls.

Tim Baierlein of Brandon, Fla., believes Romney would be a reassuring voice for a business community worried about regulations and higher taxes. But he said he still thinks Obama will win because the right wing of the Republican Party could alienate voters away from Romney and because, in his view, Romney lacks a clear message.

"He just comes across as very elitist and I think that's going to hurt," he said.

About 4 out of 10 adults say they are worse off now than they were four years ago, compared with nearly 3 out of 10 who say they are doing better now. Among those who say they're doing worse, 60 percent say they plan to vote for Romney in November.

Amy Thackeray, 35, of Alpine, Utah, said her husband and five children experienced the economic downturn when it affected her husband's job. "We've dealt with a pay cut," she said. "We are grateful we still have a job. We live within our means. We save and we feel that in situations like this, it makes us save even more."

"We need someone with more financial and business experience than what Obama has," she said. "We need a president who takes one term and makes the hard decisions to put us back on the right track, and I hope it will be Romney."

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted June 14-18 by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,007 adults nationwide, including 878 registered voters. Results from the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points; it is 4.2 points for registered voters.

Nuns Come Out Swinging Against GOP Budget Cuts During Bus Tour

DES MOINES, Iowa (The Blaze/AP) ? A group of Roman Catholic nuns who have come under fire aren?t quieting down. In fact, they?re doing quite the opposite, as they began a nine-state bus tour on Monday protesting proposed federal budget cute. The women said they weren?t trying to flout recent Vatican criticisms of socially active nuns but felt called to show how Republican policies are affecting low-income families.

The tour was organized by Network, a Washington-based Catholic social justice group criticized in a recent Vatican report that said some organizations led by nuns have focused too much on economic injustice while failing to promote the church?s teachings on abortion and same-sex marriage. The Vatican asked U.S. bishops to look at Network?s ties to another group of nuns it is reorganizing because of what the church calls ?serious doctrinal problems.?

(AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)

Sister Simone Campbell, Network?s executive director, while the tour may appear to have been organized to counter recent criticism of social activist nuns by the Vatican and American bishops, it was not. The timing was in response to consideration of the federal budget in Congress, she said.

?We?re doing this because of what?s happening on the Hill,? she told The Associated Press in an interview. ?We?re desperate to get the word out, that?s why we?re doing it now.?

But if the 14 nuns who will rotate on and off the bus during the next two weeks weren?t trying to counter the Vatican, they likely did little to ease its concerns about social activism.

The tour kicked off with a rally that had the feel of a political event. About 20 supporters brought flowers and balloons and sang, ?Alleluia,? as the nuns boarded a modern tour bus decorated with bright-colored graphics.

While the nuns say they aren?t opposing any specific Republican candidate, they plan stops at the offices of several closely tied to the budget process, including House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the architect of the House-passed budget. Their first stop Monday was Rep. Steve King?s office in Ames. The tour will end in Washington on July 2.

The mandate to crack down on socially active nuns upset some church parishioners who turned out to support the nuns.

?They want to bully these nuns and shut them down and tell them: `Get back in your place, ladies.? No, it?s not going to be that way anymore,? said Mary Ann McCoy, of Des Moines, who attends St. Ambrose Cathedral.

She said the Vatican and bishops speaking so harshly of nuns has split the church.

?They?re women of courage,? McCoy said. ?Back in the Old Testament they talked about prophets. A prophet is somebody who speaks for God and these are the things that God talked about ? injustice, the poor, the marginalized, woman. Jesus was the greatest prophet when he went out and he shook things up a lot. Well, I think the sisters are walking the walk and talking the talk and that?s what?s important to us.?

While the Vatican has criticized Network, church officials have not ordered a full-scale overhaul of it as is being done with another group, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. After a two-year investigation, the Vatican concluded the conference had undermined Roman Catholic teaching with radical feminist themes and taken positions that undermined Catholic teaching on the all-male priesthood, marriage and homosexuality. Three U.S. bishops, including Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain, have been given five years to reorganize that group.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops did not immediately comment on the bus tour.

Campbell said if the Vatican would talk to her group, she could explain that it was simply continuing the work on poverty and economic injustice that has been its focus for 40 years.

Father Michael Amadeo, who attended the rally and is pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Des Moines, said that although the Vatican may have issues with Women Religious, he doesn?t think the bus tour conflicts with church teachings.

?These are Catholic social teachings which we?ve had for decades,? he said. ?What they?re trying to highlight both to communities as well as legislators is what our Catholic social teachers are, and they are about not only charity work but asking the tough questions. Why are these people homeless? Why are they in shelters? Why are they on food stamps? Part of our social justice teaching is asking questions about justice.?

Amadeo said 300 people turned out Sunday night for a send-off prayer service for the nuns at his church. He said that?s an indication of support and there are plenty of people committed to working for justice and helping the poor.

?Hopefully this will be a groundswell as it heads across the nation,? he said.

Boehner?s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the bus tour.

King?s office responded with an email faulting ?the failed policies of President Obama and Nancy Pelosi,? vowing to repeal the president?s health care reform law and promising to pass a balanced budget amendment. The email did not say anything specifically about the nuns.

Ryan?s spokeswoman also did not mention the nuns when she responded to a request for comment by sending several Internet links to interviews and opinion pieces he?s written on the budget. One was published April 25 in the National Catholic Register and is posted on his website.

?Our budget ends welfare for those who don?t need it, but strengthens welfare programs for those who do. Government safety-net programs have been stretched to the breaking point in recent years, failing the very citizens who need help the most,? he wrote. ?? We rightly pride ourselves on looking out for one another ? and government has an important role to play in that. But relying on distant government bureaucracies to lead this effort just hasn?t worked.?

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez: Flying High!

Well, Justin Bieber has done it again.

The 19-year old continued his push toward Boyfriend of the Year, a source tells People, by treating Selena Gomez to a special helicopter ride this weekend.

With both halves of this couple in Toronto for tonight's MuchMusic Video Awards, Bieber reportedly rented the vehicle yesterday and took Selena to Stratford, Ontario, home to North America's largest classical repertory theater.

Justin with Selena

The insider describes the trip by Bieber and Gomez as "a relaxing and romantic break from work" and said each was very "excited" by the unique means of transportation.

In a recent Elle interview, Selena described Justin as awfully "romantic," citing another gesture he made many months ago when he rented out a basketball arena for the pair to watch Titanic in.

Yes, folks, rumors of a split were very premature.

Father's Day: Is there a Dad Divide to go with the Mommy Wars?

Whether they say it out loud or acknowledge it at all, that work-home divide traditionally reserved for the Mommy Wars can also rear between dads who go off to the office every day and the kind in the trenches with the kids.

What's up, Workaholic?

Whether they say it out loud or acknowledge it at all, that work-home divide traditionally reserved for the Mommy Wars can also rear between dads who go off to the office every day and the kind in the trenches with the kids.

There are bound to be rifts, given the growing league of dads staying home at least part-time. But do the paths of work dads and home dads intertwine enough to make them care quite so deeply as the ladies? How exactly are they perceived, not by researchers or journalists, but by each other?

"To be a stay-at-home dad requires a lot of confidence in who you are," said Paxton Helms, 41, in Washington, D.C.

He became one about four years ago, when his daughter was 3 months old. A son followed and he now takes part-time contracts as an international development consultant, with flexible hours. His wife also works part-time.

Uh oh, Sunday is Father's Day! What to do? Take our quiz.

"The strangest thing that ever happened to me as a [stay-at-home dad] was riding on the Metro with both my kids and a guy asking me, 'So where's Mom?' I couldn't even think why in the world somebody would be asking me that question, so I couldn't even muster an answer," he said.

SUSPICION OVER WIVES, LAYOFFS

Other at-home dads worry about jealousy from working brethren (What are they really thinking about all that time spent with the women?). Or suspicion that they're out of work. And dads on both sides of the divide report the occasional cold shoulder.

"It seems that they try to avoid me or don't want to talk about what life is like for them," said dad-of-one Donald DeLong, 55, a Bloomfield Township, Mich., attorney who acknowledges a "deeply rooted need to work and 'earn a living.'"

"When I do talk to them, the topics stay guy-safe. That is, sports, cars. After all we're both still guys. We don't talk about that sensitive touchy-feely stuff."

Other at-home dads, those by choice or pushed out of the job market, said they've endured some snark, but they consider it more of a dad-on-dad discomfort than a serious divide.

Martin Weckerlein, 33, is among them. He simply doesn't have the time to care. He was a tank commander in the Germany military, then a bank worker for six years before he gave it up to be an at-home for his three kids, ages 8, 3 and 9 months. The family lives in suburban Washington, D.C., where his wife has a government job.

"When I'm with other dads who are my age, whether they work or stay at home, they tend to be pretty accepting and even curious as to how that works that we can afford me staying home, what I do during the day with the kids, and they say it must be nice to have that time," he said.

4 presumed dead in Mt. McKinley avalanche

Climbers on Friday skirt the edge of the debris field from an avalanche Thursday that buried four climbers on Mt. McKinley.

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

Four Japanese climbers, two men and two women, are presumed dead after an avalanche swept down Mt. McKinley in Alaska's Denali National Park, the National Park Service said Saturday. One man survived after climbing out of a crevasse he had been thrown into.

The five-person team was roped together when the slide hit at 2 a.m. Thursday on the mountain's West Buttress, in an area known as Motorcycle Hill, the park service said in a statement.

"The five were travelling as one rope team, although the rope broke during the avalanche," the service stated.

Some 400 people were searching the area Saturday, but snow and wind have impeded the effort on North America's tallest mountain.

Hitoshi Ogi, 69, survived with minor injuries, making his way down from the avalanche at 11,000 feet to a base camp at 7,200 feet by 4 p.m. on Thursday.

A helicopter crew deployed that day failed to find any sign of the others, the service said.

Those presumed dead are?64-year-old Yoshiaki Kato; 50-year-old Masako Suda; 56-year-old Michiko Suzuki; and 63-year-old Tamao Suzuki.

Becky Bohrer / AP

Mt. McKinley, where 4 climbers were presumed dead, is North America's tallest mountain.

All are from Miyagi Prefecture -- the same area devastated by the 2011 quake and tsunami -- and were descending the mountain when the avalanche hit.

If confirmed, the deaths would be the worst accident on McKinley since 1992, when four Canadian climbers died.

On May 23, a Finnish man died after falling 2,000 feet while trying to ski down a steep McKinley chute known as the "Orient Express".

The first death of the 2012 McKinley climbing season was on May 18, when a German climber died in a 1,100 foot fall. He was trying to retrieve a backpack that was sliding downhill when he lost his footing and fell.

The climbing season in Denali generally runs from late April until early July. Usually 1,200 to 1,300 people attempt McKinley each year.

"Substantial snowfall and windy conditions in recent weeks have kept most climbers from reaching the top," the service said Saturday. "As of June 16, there are 395 mountaineers attempting routes on Mt. McKinley, the majority on the West Buttress route. Out of the 630 climbers that have already returned from expeditions this season, 234 reported reaching the summit, equating to a 37 percent summit rate."
